GM Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement/Hack

This application is good for any GM 5.3L engines years 07-13. I did it on my 07 Chevy Tahoe.
No need to remove, the intake manifold, fuel lines, etc.. like they do in most videos! I only removed the PCV vent hose, and the solenoid purge valve hose.

The dealers do not remove the intake. They change it just like this. They only quote to remove it because that's what service data and labor guides specify.

I used a little tool called a cotter pin puller it's like a screw driver with a hook on the end works perfect but that would probably work just the same

Thanks a bunch for your video. It was a lot of help. I was able to get mine done only removing the solenoid line. I used a sensor socket,swivel,a long extension with a socket wrench and a little help from a finger ratchet to hand tighten the sensor after I got it on. And for removing the filter I used a wood screw that I had laying around and it worked perfectly I had no issues getting that filter out. Thanks again

I just replaced mine a month ago, so far so good. I replaced it the first time about 18 months ago. This time before I replaced it, I added a quart of motor flush. Ran at idle for 5 minutes replaced oil and oil filter. I went with an AC Delco oil filter and then replaced the oil sensor and filter. The filter was very dirty. Now my oil pressure is good, and the truck is running very well for having over 160k.

Better to lay as much padding in key places so as not to hurt yourself and then you can lay, almost comfortably, across the fender and upper engine parts and unclip that grey connector by feel. Then you can thread your socket, swivel joints and extensions onto the top of the sensor to remove it. I watched a number of videos and studied how I thought that little grey connector would pull up and permit the connector to be removed from the sensor. Was it a pain in the neck? Yes it was but in terms of saving a significant amount of money and deriving a sense of satisfaction from doing the job myself it was all worth it.

I used a seat cushion from a travel trailer dinette seat. The black plastic cover is held on by one 8mm screw. It's a captive screw, so, it will not come completely out. It keeps you from losing it. Once removed, you pull the cover towards you to the front of the truck. It has two tabs that hold it at the back and the screw in the front top. Then I put the cushion over the intake manifold. I used a step stool and got myself pulled all the way towards the firewall and laid on it. You need to get as far as possible to be able to reach it easily. It's not bad this way. Laying across the engine. I cleaned as much dirt around the sensor as possible before removal. This way when installing the new one you don't get dirt in the open hole. The best tool for the long sensors like my 2001 3500 dually 8.1liter uses, is to spend the $47-$50 at Harbor Freight Tools and get their oxygen sensor tool kit. It has 2 sockets that fit the long GM sensors. It makes life so much easier. One socket is 1-1/16" and the other is 27mm which is pretty much the same exact size. The sockets like the one in this video won't work on the long sensor. The long sensor has only one wire pin connection it uses the engine block ground for the other connection. With that said, you don't want to use Teflon tape on the threads or you'll insulate the electrical connection and won't have continuity. It will be like the sensor isn't plugged in. The new sensor has some red pipe dope on the threads. I don't think it needs a crush washer, as I didn't have one on the old one and the new part didn't come with one. The threads appear to be tapered pipe threads and I think are metric threads.

If you have a lot of miles do it the long way so you can change out the intake gaskets and valley pan gasket. It kills a bunch of jobs doing it the long way.

I changed mine in a 2011 avalanche it takes 20 minutes just to look in there and figure out where you have to get to I tried to unplug the wiring harness from it with the sound baffle intact after 45 minutes or so I decided that I was going to sacrifice the end of the sound baffle and I did I got my saws all in there and I cut about 2 1/2 inches off the end of that piece of plastic and then I could see the sensor I could see the wiring harness I could see the locking clip😳 I could EVEN see the CLIP THAT RELEASES THE WIRING HARNESS😳 IF YOU DO NOT SACRIFICE THE END OF THE PLASTIC SOUND BAFFLE This could be a two or three hour job and very frustrating and miserable. I tried to do it with the sound Baffle in place and I finally got to the point where the sound baffle had to be sacrificed!

@@bill9275 and in driving the vehicle afterwards I don’t notice a difference in sound levels that I can tell😳 I am very far from a GM engineer or service tech however starting the truck and seeing that oil pressure gauge doesn’t move at all that’s all I could think about lol it while the motors running is DO I REALLY have oil pressure🤯OR am I roasting the engine………. I did my son's a few weekends ago in 100+ temp, and it was the hardest thing I have done in a while, mainly because I could not get my standard 1 1/16 socket to slip down onto the sensor. I also didn't disconnect all of the hoses in the way, but it would have been easier with the right socket. Clearly, I should have done a little more yt research and bought the right tool for the job.

Thanks for posting. I did mine yesterday on my 2010 Avalanche. Then I came across your video today. And you had the same symptoms I had but was told, by the mechanic, it was a bad oil pump. He wanted 3k$ to change it. So I figured I'd try this first. So I'm wondering how long you had the vehicle after the repair and if this solved the issue or did you still end up needing a pump. Also, a few tricks I learned, while changing it, were if you push that little heat shield (that's totally in the way) as far towards the firewall as possible it frees up a lot of room. Also when retrieving the screen filter we used hemostats with a curved tip. Just clamped on to one of the little plastic tabs on top of the filter and it slid right out. Thank you in advance if you get back to me.

Hey thanks for your comment. I am not the first owner of the Tahoe. But it was pretty ran through when I got it. This sensor problem arised when it was around 200k miles. And I never took it to the shop for diagnosing and now that you mention it, it never crossed my mind it would be the oil pump ($3k is ridiculous) the truck still ran and drove the same it was just the needle on the gauge for the oil pressure that was failing. So I just decided to replace it. About 3 weeks later after replacing the sensor it happened again so I got a new OEM sensor as well as new wire harness pigtail connector and cut the old one out and spliced the new one in. What was happening was that oil would get up into the sensor and render it useless. But after doing this project for the second time it never happened again. Also I never replaced the oil pump, its hard to come good honest mechanics now a days so I'd rather do it myself😅 I also posted the video of the second time I did the oil pressure sensor and wire harness if you're interested.

I have watched several of these. What about tying a long piece of string to the oil pressure sensor and also to your flex adapter. Nothing wose than dropping the new part down in there somewhere lioosing your fkex drive or extension etc. You always take a razor knife to cut them loose after its safe to do so😮

Mine was dropping to 0 in like 5 minutes was saying the same think low oil pressure tuner engine off what I did was put a bottle of Marble mystery oil in the oil before an oil chame start it up let it run for 15 minutes change the oil and filter disconnect the oil pressure sensor for like 30 minutes plugged it back it an I got pressure again I’m back on the road everything good.

Just changed mine, to pull that filter out i used a 2-3 in lag bolt. Whatever size just fits in the new one maybe 5/16? thread it in by hand just a thread or 2 and it pulls right out.

I'm original owner 250,000 so know ioil changed as should. the socket $13 bucks. as you showed they're not that tight and install is only 15 ft.lbs. thanks for showing how to unhook holes for more room oh yeah has always and still does idle at 40 psi. 4.8l cast iron blocks are really great motors.

You could also push the filter down and run without it, nothing will happen if you push it down. Been running mine for a good 5 years now no issue same oil pressure sensor.

Literally doing this right now on a 2011 gmc sierra. I can't get the clip back on the wiring boot / harness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's really tough to get my hands back there and there is a shield right where I need to be. I'm thinking I'm going to cut it off. I'm not a wrench turner but was quoted $1200 to do this $35 repair.

Hey bro, unfortunately the only other suggestion I have is to remove the intake manifold. Its a lot of time consuming work. But if you can't seem to get the harness back on the sensor without looking then thats the only other option. Also did you compare the new sensor to your old sensor? The new sensor might screw on good, but what if the part that connects to the harness is different and maybe you didnt nothice. Its happened to me before.

Thanks peeps! Geesh that was fast! I can't do the manifold thing. All I have to do is click this gray fork looking clip back into this blue harness thing to lock it in. Took me 30 minutes to get it off, 3 hrs trying to get it back together. Sensor is in harness fits perfect, this friggin clip is killin me. GD hand is purple trying to get to it. I wouldn't use Dorman. Its known junk. OEM is best when it comes to sensors, switches, and any engine management items. A good trick to remove the screen is push a 5/16 by 2 inch bolt into it then pull out.

Mine stopped working 3 years ago. I knew of this issue and I also I know I really DO have oil pressure from the lack of clacking. The reason I haven't replaced it is because ever since it stopped working, the active fuel management system doesn't engage (AMF) so I figured this has deleted that system which is what I want. Anyone else had this happen??

You know its great that you discovered this and posted it because I also didnt want the AFM on my Tahoe to activate and bought a little device ($200+) that connects to the obd port to keep it from activating. To be honest as long as you know that you have proper oil pressure who cares if the sensor craps out..

You may have gotten the wrong socket. You need an actual oil pressure sensor socket with the rounded corners to match the rounded corners of the sensor. There should be literally no gap.

John. You just pull upwards in the center of the cover. There’s two studs and it’s sitting on them with some rubber grip as the fastener.

Yes. There is a torque spec I think 8-10lbs/ft. But I didn't do it cause its so miniscule and a hassle since its behind the manifold if you don't take it off. I do however remember watching a video where the guy did torque down using wobble extensions and universals but you lose some torque when you use those so it wasn't worth the effort for me.

Have someone scan the vehicle. On my truck it was front left air bag sensor. (Behind the front bumper left side) very easy job. Just replace and airbag light went out by itself.

I remove the oil sensor and was going to install the news sensor and fumbled it out my hand when trying to install it. Now it somewhere between the motor and transmission and can’t see it. Ahhhhhhhhh!! I quit for today.

@@mdzautomotive yes. I couldn’t retrieve the new sensor it’s might be somewhere in the top of the transmission. So I took the old sensor that I removed that broke in half when taking it off. I only had the treaded part and took my receipt to Auto part store and the guy looked at me crazy, but after arguing he gave me a new one. I wasn’t going to spend $65 again since it’s my brother truck. That boy is broke and he was crying when I lost the sensor in the motor. I was trying to remove the oil filter screen off but i never could even with 90 degree pick or screw. So I didn’t care anymore I just replace the sensor and it worked. I was so happy because my brother was riding me for a week. Thank for the video..

Im not familiar with H2 but the engine is based off the GMT820 GM 6.0L or 6.2L and if the set up is similar then yes the oil pressure sensor is probably back there too.

Also this is a great video and tip and I just replaced the oil pressure sensor with the screen and it went up about over the notch but it's still dropping in the oil pressure what do you think I need to do next since I do have the Hummer H2 6.0

Low engine oil is the number one cause for pressure dropping. Excessive engine wear like piston ring wear or seals leaking can cause oil pressure drop. If your H2 is near 200k miles than its likely. Wrong viscosity oil and damaged oil pump. But an oil pump replacement is a hell of a job😓 I’d hate to tell you to change that if it can be avoided.

What happens was oil gets up into the wire harness and renders it useless. So I cut the old wire harness w/the pigtail connector and spliced a new one in. I had to remove the manifold and it was tedious but I learned.
