No-one is being punished here. Benefits are means tested. Those who need it will still get it. It’s basic economics. Fuel prices will come down as energy suppliers now have to compete for value for money. Before they were setting rates higher than needed, as the government were giving money to a lot of pensioners who didn’t need it. Investment in GB energy will increase competition and drive down prices also.

Pensioners that have been given inflation busting pay rises for years whereas working taxpayers wages have stagnated. Pensioners who mostly own their home outright that is now worth 10x what they paid for it while working people can't get on the property ladder... If this country is going to get anywhere, they need to look after working people who are suffering now in order to pay for pensioners. Means testing is the right thing and they should do it for a lot of benefits.

@@timthorpe81yep and don't forget the quadruple lock the Tories were planning - frankly pensioners have had numerous handouts while the Tories have been in government while young people have continuously struggled - God forbid pensioners don't get additional winter fuel payments when they have had the benefit of working their entire life to secure their own future and have a state pension that likely won't even be around by the time young people retire as a lot of people have lived a life of debt and leave behind debt. Young people now factually have it financially harder than those who were working 50/60 years ago due to stagnant wage growth and increased essential item pricing so it's time for a fair chance at life for the younger group as opposed to a group who has already had numerous opportunities.

This is a ridiculous comments. There is absolutely zero reason to make this personal. She has a very high-pressure job, so she gets paid well. And she does her job well: as she said she made that decision in order to avoid rent and mortgage payments to rise significantly, and to avoid endangering pensions, all of which would affect old people as well.

@@thisismetoday Liars cannot be tolerated in office- they harm people. Her husband was involved in the Gordon Brown attack on pensioners- it's not acceptable. No one would object to their high salaries if they were doing a good job, but she is not. She has lied to parliament and to the British public that she did not know about the state of the economy- she did- and therefore she has 2 choices: resign or be sacked. You will be old one day too if you are lucky. My parents brought me up to respect old people. It's nauseating when young people (upstarts) disrespect old people. How dare you! Respect your elders!

No child benefit for 3rd / 4th child etc but still committed to paying £3 billion a year to corrupt Ukraine for as long as it takes. So, Ukraine is more important than UK pensioners and addressing UK child poverty it seems. Taxing the rich is not the answer because most of the so called rich are already paying 71% of the tax take. How much more do you expect them to pay? I agree CGT should be in line with income tax but IHT should be left alone as it is …or preferably abolished completely. How is right that money that’s already been taxed can be taxed again. It’s also crazy that people are taxed on gifts when the source of that gift has most likely already been taxed as well. This is tantamount to theft and will certainly force people into leaving the UK and dissuade those who would have otherwise invested here. Keep blowing up that tax balloon on the wealthy and it will eventually pop! This is a fact!

@@stum5639 Only 3% of people are liable for Inheritance Tax. If I bought a property in the 70's for £30k and when I die it's worth £600k, the tax paid by earners today to afford that home FAR outweighs any tax paid on that initial purchase. When the have-not's are suffering so severely, a mature economy (and a mature society) should look for ways to redistribute some of that burden. If the Tories hadn't played silly buggers with the economy for so many years, we might have been in a position to abolish it, but we're not. Who needs selfish people to stay in a community they refuse to support?

We wouldn't need these handouts at all if they capped energy company profits and so on - we live in a false economy so the already rich can continue to rinse it; energy, fuel, food, housing could all be better legislated to make smaller profits. Labor probably suspected something was amiss but weren’t in positions to see the actual figures until they recently assumed office . Apparently the Tories blew the money budgeted for whatever it was supposed to be spent on and spent it wherever they wanted it to be spent . You know , a few billion here , a few billion there , and you have it - the black hole , and the Tories refusing to take responsibility for the fiscal mess they created . Now come the cutbacks and the suffering because of it , affecting primarily the poor , the handicapped , the elderly , the destitute , the have nots . @@fredmercury1314 so you want to cut ALL immigration? Do you realise the incoming brain drain that would happen if all immigration was cut? Brain drain is cancelled by immigration (mainly legal), cutting ALL immigration would leave us with less quaternary sector workers, putting us behind in the modern era, essentially killing Britain's chances of becoming a global technological power. Also, how is it Labour's fault that Liz Truss (a *Tory* PM) managed to absolutely wreck the economy in only days, resign, then leave Rishi to pick up the pieces, only for him to feed us a huge nothingburger, only then to have Labour struggle?

Billions or a trillions? The real national debt, in 2024-25, is equivalent to more than four times the size of the UK economy or 434 per cent of forecast nominal GDP. On a per household basis, the real national debt will equate to £430,332 in 2024-25. On a per person basis, it is £180,534. How on Earth did we get into this mess? I have no debt and my parents were never in debt and yet the whole nation is in debt. If we as a nation cannot pay our debt, then what? Will the pound in our pocket be worthless? Will inflation take off? What about private debt? If interest rates go up then it’s game over for the UK. We have lived through the last 14 years under Tory governments when money was cheap, almost free at near zero % interest rates and money and IOUs were printed as though there was no tomorrow…..how was that a way to run our economy? And here we are, in a country that is essentially broke. We are now living in a war economy and if Russia wins the war in Ukraine, we will all suffer even more. This is a far worse situation than just before the Great Depression which followed the 1920’s which was followed by another WW. Britain is in dire straights today.
