Thousands of people are demanding the removal of controversial monuments and statues around the UK, which campaigners describe as "racist and unwelcoming". A number of petitions are circling online which have taken inspiration from an anti-racism demonstration in Bristol, which saw protesters topple the statue of slave trader Edward Colston before dragging and heaving the bronze monument into the harbour. With the growing surge in support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which has sparked global protests following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, petitions have emerged online demanding controversial monuments in the UK are taken down.

Why aren't Spanish colonial buildings in Latin American countries being destroyed? Why is only English speaking colonialism bad?

Oh Latin American countries have their issues with Spain. Don't doubt for a second that there isn't some resentment amongst certain groups especially those of indigenous heritage such as the Incas, Aztecs, Mayans etc. But their relationship to Spain as a whole is considered differently. Some countries consider Spain to be the motherland primarily because a majority of their european ancestors settled there. And then there are others with stronger ties to their traditional roots before colonialism and have a more ambivalent but semi-ok relationship with Spain. Even if some still partially resent them for what they did. I don't know the full story but safe to say that Spain has deep colonial issues as well.

Love him or hate him, Farage has a point. We shouldn't give in to mob rule and have protestors taking it upon themselves to topple statues. They're a law on themselves, and whether statues should be removed should be down to the will of the majority and not the minority. Shola says these statues have no historical benefit but then when was history about benefit? Censoring statues is like pretending those unfortunate things that happened in the name of those whom those statues represent would be like pretending they never happened. As the old saying goes, those who forget history are themselves doomed to repeat it. I often agree with a lot of what Piers says, but here he's lost me.

It is true that there are racists in this country as there are in other countries. I think this is the best country in the world when you consider education, work opportunities, and housing. We may have been let down by the current Government and their disregarde for the general public. Lets hope we vote a caring, competent and useful Government into power?
