I've never tried with straw, nor seen it done. I'll ask around...

Can steam be used to get the iron hot enough to use or is a flame pretty much mandatory?
@GMBhatblocksАй бұрын
Great question. I'm not sure how long it would take the steam to heat the iron up or if it would get hot enough. It could be heated on a portable electric hob, but not as easily, if that's helpful?

Does it matter if the brim is stiffened or not? Does that effect the possibility of “shine” on the brim where the iron hits?
@GMBhatblocks2 жыл бұрын
This was a pre stiffened brim. The heat would soften any stiffener present it felt. Most men's felts are already stiffened and it would be hard to add stiffener after rolling the edge.

Will this iron work on the thicker western weight felts?
@GMBhatblocks3 жыл бұрын
This was designed with felts of a 3mm thickness.

Any idea how hot the stainless steel part is? My husband has a tool that can measure the temperature of something with a laser. thanks

Hi, sorry I've no idea. I've never measured the heat on this, nor have the kit to do so.

Can this be used on a straw hat?

Hi Brent, I haven't tried this myself on straw, however I've heard back from a customer who has successfully used it on a straw hat.

How to you keep from making the brim “shine” from the iron?
@GMBhatblocks2 жыл бұрын
I didn't notice it happening when I made this hat and others. If there were any mark's, you could easily sand them out with 320 grit sandpaper.

What was the size of the brim before you started curling the edge, and how much of a curl did you put on it?
@omorsebrown2 жыл бұрын
Hi, sorry, I don't remember what width I cut the brim on this hat, it was only blocked for the purpose of making the demonstration. I went round two or three times with the iron and I guess it's about 3/4 of a full roll. You can easily choose how far to roll so you just keep going until you have it looking how you want it.

How do you determine the thickness of the curl with the width of the brim?
@omorsebrown4 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, I'm not totally sure what you mean, but the diameter of the curl is determined by the diameter of the metal bar on the iron. As such, this is not variable. The width of the brim is cut before curling so that can be whatever you want it to be.
@scotthamp3844 жыл бұрын
@@omorsebrown what I mean is, when you do a pencil roll, does it change the width of the brim? For example, if you have a hat with a 4" brim, does the roll make the brim shorter? Or does it stay 4"?
@omorsebrown4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the width of the brim will be reduced by the amount you choose to curl the edge. If you want to retain 4", then just cut it wider before curling. You'll soon learn what extra width you need to allow.
