We know that Fat Bikes are fast. We've seen Blake Samson do incredible MTB tricks on a fat bike. They're comfortable, grippy, lightweight and can do pretty much anything any other mountain bike can do. But are they cool?

100% fat bike convert. I sold my Whyte T129 6months after buying my fatbike (which Id bought as a 2nd 'winter' bike). I didn't use my full sus once after buying the fattie - it just put a bigger smile on mile face. I've now raced xc, and enduro on it, podium'd and regularly beat my old full sus strava times. They may not be the best at everything, but they certainly aren't the worst. More important to me is that no other bike will keep me smiling as much when I ride it.

Guess it depends where you live. Up here in Canada fat bikes are becoming very prevalent simply because you can use it all year round with all the snow/slush. Are they "cool"? In winter time when you're biking past the cross country skiers. Yes In summer time when you're biking past mountain bikers. No In spring when the trails are a sloggy mess of ice/slush/mud and you bike past a mountain bike that is stuck. Yes.

Has anyone who’s commented actually ridden one in snow??? They are not designed for riding on dirt full stop, here in Canada (Rocky Mountains,BC, we ride them November to April then back onto regular bikes.. you don’t see anyone on these in the summer. Anyone who says that fat tires make no difference in snow how about you fly here and actually take both styles of bike out and then we can watch you eat your words over the beers your buying. I’m not even a fat bike owner, I was a skeptic until I took one out and had the best downhill snowblast.

I own a 2018 Trek Farley EX 9.8 Full Squish Fat Bike as well as a Pivot Mach 6 Enduro Style bike and the Trek is my go-to more capable all season bike. Too many riders make wrong assumptions about Fat Bikes in general. Good to see GMBN getting more recognition or them. However doing a video with a FS Fat Bike would be great and offer more exposure. Well I'm 73 and have road and MTBs, just got a used fat tire bike, and it just looks weird! But when I ride it (no suspension, 4" tires) it just seems to be a real kick. It is just fun and I just can get off road shoulders, cross country as in no trails, I just blow through sand and just grind up hills and grades. "Grind" is the operative term and when I hit a rock or three, 8-10 psi in the tires, I really can't seem to feel them. I have a Salsa, Mukluk alloy frame, not sure the year, say 2012ish? I must say I'm having more fun on it than my Foundry Broadaxe 29er hardtail. But I'm keeping both for sure.

yeah, same here in NY. Initially, I was put off by them because the first time I saw one it was in a big box retailer, they were the cheap end of the spectrum and so really heavy. the second time I saw one was in a bike shop, and this guy who was obviously a regular came in to use their compressor to change his tire, and he had a real struggle getting it to seal well enough to inflate. He swore by it though, and said he'd never go back to a regular MTB. the third time, I had just gotten done with work, and my coworker and I were getting coffee and this guy rides up on one, so I stopped and talked with hima bit, and he was talking about how light it was and said here pick it up, and I couldn't believe it. I would definitely get one for the winter.

Love mine. They're just great fun - a great second bike. I'll ride anything on mine that I can on my Insurgent. The only negative for me is that they're terrible in the gloop. Because they float rather than cut in, they tend to plough on rather than turn which can be a little scary at times. For anyone thinking of getting one, Mastodon forks are night and day better than the ubiquitous Bluto forks.

My ride along a MUP to my usual trailhead takes me by 2 high schools, 2 elementary schools, and multiple play areas. So I ride by lots of kids from 3-18 years old and they absolutely think my fat bike is cool. I get so many positive comments from them on my fattie -- probably average 2 per ride. And I once interrupted a drug deal along the path and the kids gave me a "nice bike" and then continued with their transaction. fwiw: I have never received one compliment when I ride my $6K road bike along the same path.

The first guy interviewed with the Vee Tire jersey is my mate, and it's my fully rigid Kona Wo he rode down at Windhill lol... link to video of him riding it below :) They are definitely a niche bike... I bought mine for a specific purpose (because Northamptonshire turns in to a soggy clay and mud pit in winter). It is slower undoubtedly... however, it keeps going where none of my other bikes can. Being fully rigid, it can be hard work on rough trails though. Are they cool? Dunno... like most things, perception depends on perspective. For me, it serves a specific function... I will say though it gets a lot of attention as I ride it round my local trails, anywhere in between hysterical laughter and abject terror :) Video link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmeWe6F5oLx3g8U

Love my On One Fatty Trail fatbike. The grip from the tyres is awesome, I'll never be the most confident rider but it gives me confidence where my skinny doesn't. Get some fast rolling tyres on it and once your used to it it will take you anywhere in any conditions. Across moor tops, at the beach or at a trail center, great fun!

Living in Michigan, it just make sense for me to own a fat bike. Riding along one of the great lake shorelines or winter riding is some of the best fun I've ever had on a bike, but it just doesn't do it for me on the trails like a more traditional mountain bike does.

The UK may not be the best market for fat bikes, but here in the colonies they are very cool. My wife and I ride full suspension Farley's, and they will do anything Utah has to offer from Park City in northern UT to technical slick rock in southern UT. We also have miles of groomed snow for all winter riding, what is not cool about that?

I live in the western US, in a town where mountain bikes are really popular. I don't see fat bikes out between March and November. But in the winter, we have a bunch of trails groomed for fat bikes, and they're really popular on snow. Even bought one myself just for that purpose. Super fun for that, but don't really ride it in the summer.

I live in New England. We have beaches. And mountains. And lots of snow. I mainly use my fat bike up in the mountains. We go to ski, and after, or when wind closes the lifts, you can find me on the snowy trails in the woods. Blasting along with powdery snow kicking up behind you is cool. That’s what a fat bike is for I think....or mud.

The bike in the video still had relatively small tires for a fat bike, some have 4,7 or 5 inch wide ones. Some people drive them in sand deserts, on loose sand they can use this wide tires.

Hey GMBN, great video as always. I live in Montana, USA where we have snow on the trails at least 5 months of the year. I use my fat bike during that time since even my plus bike can't make it up or down some of the trails. I would highly encourage you to try a fat bike in the snow. Heck, come on over the Montana during the winter and try a fat bike out for where it was designed to be ridden.

They're modestly popular here in Florida, where they are able to handle soft sand that would stall "lesser" bikes in their tracks. I've chosen a fat e-bike as my next "victim", just saving up my pennies to be able to afford it. May end up getting a conventional fat if I like how it rides and handles, since you can't take an e-bike on MTB or multi-use trails, and concerns of water damage or flooding the electronics if that puddle is deeper than I thought.

They're probably a bit nerdy, but they've had a big influence on the rest of the industry regardless of how popular they actually are. You can never really speak out against them until you've ridden one, they're a fantastic pack horse for adventure riding, especially when they're often rigid and loaded with rack mounts and plenty of other accessory bosses. I commute by fat bike, it's been very reliable and comfortable, and although everyone wants to assume the worst, it's not a slow or heavy bike to push around.

Fattire e-bikes are nice, I recommend running a thinner front and a fat rear for e-bike if your rear wheel is your power wheel, and even for normal fat bikes, as the main problem I have is steering radius when both tires are the same size, and you also get less rolling resistance and more power to the ground in the rear.

Nice to see some positivity from GMBN reference fatbikes, they seem to be the only guys with open minds to another type of cycling. We just love fatbikes, in fact we love them so much we have our own brand, Smokestone Bikes. Fatbikes are much like all other brands of bike, some good ones and some not so good, also tyre's and pressures make so much of a difference. Plus Forest of Dean is where you'll find us a lot of the weekends. Great unbiased video guys.

I have a fat bike with studded tyres and rigid forks, it's hard work. When I bought it I heard some kids and their mums describe it as a 'tractor bike' - it sums it up perfectly and probably answers the is it cool? question - no! It's great on ice and patchy old snow and when there's not enough to ski on, but I wouldn't bother for the UK unless maybe I lived around Aviemore.
