Hence the segment name...good idea? Can be applied to all formats, dh, xc, trials, enduro/trail....so cud have a series of vids...

I got into mountain biking on a $80 steel 26" hardtail from Wal-Mart. Rode it til I broke it. While they're definitely cheap and you get what you pay for, they're IMO the best option for someone unsure of whether they'll like biking or not. Plus, the 26er had narrower tires than my 29er, a shorter gear range and less responsive suspension. Sounds terrible, but it definitely forces you learn good bike control on the trail.

What broke on it?
@sixstanger004 жыл бұрын
@@johnhanley9946 Bottom bracket. One of the trails I ride has a log crossing. When I rolled over it, my chainring bottomed out on the log and broke the BB. It was only an $80 bike, so wasn't worth fixing. At that point my skills had exceeded what it was designed for, anyway. So I bit the bullet and upgraded - a Motobecane Fantom29 X4. Best $500 I ever spent. I bought it in 2017 and the bike is still amazing to this day. Already competed in 2 full XC seasons.

@@sixstanger00 Do you mean the frame broke, like the bottom bracket shell?
@sixstanger004 жыл бұрын
@@johnhanley9946 No, just the bottom bracket itself. The frame was steel and the bike weighed a plump 39 lbs. A tank. After the incident, the bike was "ride-able" enough to get me back to the car, but the crank assembly wobbled because of the broken BB.

I feel so sad for all the riders these days that didn't come up on OG bikes. I know I would have progressed sooo much faster and with hundreds of less injuries had I only ever rode modern bikes but, as you guys know, the total exhilaration that those old bikes provide from very modest trails is amazing. It's the ole chicken or egg question, there was no need for bike-parks when a simple walking trail could make you crap your pants, but there would be no need for amazing bikes if we still had nowhere to use them properly. love this vid, such fun!

I found the joy of atb'ing (no mountains here) again quite recently with a '96 Peugeot Energy 300 frame (10€) that I build with some resurrected wheels, 3x9 Deore LX and old Marzocchi fork that I got laying around. The frame is massive and the stem is loong, but it still gave me the best thrills yet! Then I put together an old Fausto Coppi frame (cost me a pack of coffee), that was probably a budget bike back in the day ('94 or so). That also has a big frame but with wider fat flatbar, short stem & quill adapter and 0 setback seatpost it fits and feels nice, especially with ghetto tubeless (2.55" back, 2.1" front). After that I got a '96 Mongoose Crocadile SX for 35€ in fully original spec. I haven't customized it yet, but it needs a shorter stem and wider bars. Frame should be sized quite right but the 175mm cranks and the 120mm stem are a bit too much for me. Also the Rock Shox Quadra 21R would maybe make a good wall item, I'd like to spare it from hard riding. Then I found another Peugeot, a '98 Origin 20 XS (25€). It is the best fitting of them all and I fitted it with a quill adapter and a wider bar, but the stem was just changed to a retro Zanzi stem. It needed about 15-20€ extra to get it running good. Too bad the chain snapped and took the front derailleur with it. Many 90's low to mid tier MTB's are selling here in Finland for like 10-50€ for a quite decent chromoly one. You could find something like STX-RC or Deore LX groups or even better if you're lucky. The bikes listed, I've built in the last 3 months :D Only the Coppi frame I had since summer. They make a real nice little projects, but I see the risk of getting too many in the long run. :) Finding them from the market sites with some terrible pictures and bad spelling is one part of the challenge. Gladly, there is quite much pics and info's around the web, especially if the bike has gained even a mild appreciation over the years. 26" is not dead!
