Blake, you are awesome. I love your energy and content. Way to go Jen!!! No stupid question. I had the same questions. The foot placement is very important to be able to lean your heels back. Blake you are an awesome example of a top rider that can show and teach people. Loved your cut to you editing and correcting your mistake. Way to go!!! I was stoked when Jen did the plank on the ground. I ride with my GF. She’s way better than me and she takes the time to teach me also. Cheers and keep it coming. Blake we need to see how Jen progresses. It's pretty cool to have someone of your calibre representing the absolute novice. Because to be fair you guys can be pretty intimidating to someone who doesn't have a clue. Damn handy that your student just happens to be your Mrs. This could unlock so much fun for potential MTBers. I'm gonna follow your tips and try to get my wife out with me and our sons. I shall forward the link for this to her as well to follow.

My partners mountain biking now. Crap equipment was the biggest turn off in the beginning. Get a good fitting bike with wide bars and modern "slacker" geo, hire if you have to so they dont get a bad impression. The 2008 XC bike in my shed had narrow bars and was very steep, and while it was CF, light and was well tuned, once we started pointing downhill it put her off alot. A similar year giant trance/reign was night/day for her enjoyment as the bike felt that much safer for her even though it was heavier. "inspiring confidence" is critical for a beginner, as anything that makes it feel unstable is really disconcerting, and more modern bikes do that in spades.

soo many new riders out on the trails now i think this could help a lot of them out , simple things shown in blake and Jen's vid like looking ahead and body position , they just add another dimension to a ride and so useful on any ride out ( little things mean a lot ) , well done you two ;)

Blake, Jenn-thank you so much! You helped me give words for what i was feeling that I needed to learn to get more confident on the trail. Thank you for helping me give myself permission to break these techniques down and practice. My boyfriend doesn’t understand because he isn’t a beginner and did BMX as a kid. I love your lighthearted and playful approach and dynamic. Okay, off to create my assault course and wrap up my practice session for the day! Learning how to mountain bike is about more than just hopping on the trail and winging it or trying to apply the skills when it’s you & your bike vs. downhill cornering on one side and the edge of a mountain on the other.

This is great, I'm going to run through these drills with my partner. Years ago, her boyfriend before me took her out mountain biking for her first time. She had basically just learned to ride, and this fucking dipshit didn't do any more instruction, didn't take it easy, just had her follow down a steep, loose section of trail (I've ridden it, it's loose gravel, fast and steep). She immediately went OTB, broke a collarbone, and had to wait out there for EMTs to come pick her up. That was ger first experience of mountain biking. Years later, she can barely ride because of the deeply ingrained fear that left her with. But we still go out and ride together occasionally on paved paths, albeit at a crawling pace. If we go at jogging pace, she instinctually grabs a fistful of brake. But we're patiently working on it together! She really wants to eventually ride trails and maybe even bikepack with me. These are a great set of drills to go through. The moral of the story is, be patient and gentle with a friend or partner that you're teaching to ride. Don't throw them in the deep end. It's irresponsible, they might get hurt, and you might ruin the whole sport for them. Run them through drills like these, and when you go on rides together, enter the ride with the understanding that you're doing it for them. You're going to go at their pace, and give them tips and encouragement to keep them comfortable, safe, and making progress. Eventually they'll have enough basic skill and comfort that you can go back to your normal style of riding, push them a bit, drop them occasionally. Then it's like riding with your other buddies! But it takes a while to get to that level. Don't be like my partner's fuckwit of an ex (I mean that in multiple ways, since he was also an abusive asshole). If you're assuming the role of teacher, you have to handle to responsibility that goes with it. And in general, those are good tips for relationships as a whole, I've found, not just introducing your partner to MTB. You're in it together to have fun!
@mk0759
@mk0759 4 жыл бұрын
Another thing to remember about relationships as a whole is: She still liked this 'dipshit, wreckless, showoff, abusive asshole' enough to pursue a LTR with him, so maybe take her judgement (and descriptions of various times involving him) with a few grains of salt? 😉

@nwimpney
@nwimpney 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I'm sometimes amazed how many people have their absolute beginner friends/partners start in on a moderately difficult blue trail with nothing but some bad advice. (Lean back, and just use the back brake so you don't go OTB, etc.) Often because they're wanting to ride the trails they usually ride, and have them tag along. When they should be riding around on easy terrain in the park/back yard, (Like in this video), Then ride a couple easy green trails, Then work up to the easiest blues you can find, over several different days. Those first rides are going to be super easy, maybe a little boring for you, but if you want to get someone into it, you don't want to throw them in at the deep end.
@evanbarnes9984
@evanbarnes9984 4 жыл бұрын
@@mk0759 No, definitely not. One aspect of abusive people is that they are very good at manipulating their partners and making them feel worthless, and like they'll never have a chance with another partner, so they have to stay with the abuser. It's really common, unfortunately. It's like Stockholm Syndrome. You adopted a weird position, man, in defense of an abusive asshole. You don't even know the story or the details like I do; being in a relationship with him was a devastating experience that took her years to recover from. So as much as I would like to be kind, and gently guide you toward a better understanding of abusive relationships and how common and damaging they are, fuck off. Educate yourself.

@@nwimpney Exactly! Besides, riding with a new rider and seeing them overcome challenges and push themselves safely is so fun and rewarding! Total compersion fest. It turns any easy trail into a fun ride, even if it's way to easy for you personally.

I'v been missing being able to teach people to mtn bike this season so far. this video absolutely made my day. thank you to posting this and thank you Jen for allowing us to see you progress. i was smiling ear to ear and cheering for you with every skill you learned. especially when you started to get the straight line riding :) I'm going to live vicariously through this series to get my "teaching fix" until i can get back to teaching people myself. such an uplifting video. wishing you both tons more fun while riding, take care

Some great practice tips, even for folks NOT beginners! I particularly like the plank "balance" and maneuvering around the obstacles.

Blake, this was great! All four of my kids have become much more interested in riding their bikes, and we’re going to sit down tonight and watch this video together. Tomorrow morning, we’re all going to work on our basic skills.

Well, I am not sure how long that all took, but she certainly came a LONG way in what seems like a short time! Your little man will be doing jumps before he is 4 with skilled Mom and Dad like you guys! I started last year and love it, the slow corner turns are still a bugger for me. I will try it in the back yard with rocks instead of trying it on the trail. Might make for less trail rash...LOL

I know that front brake on the right comment was tongue in cheek. But I think it actually _is_ better, for 2 reasons. 1. Most people are right handed, and the front brake is the one where the majority of your braking power comes from. It's useful to have good modulation, and right handers will tend to have a lot more finesse with their right hands, and are more likely to be on/off when braking with their left hand. 2. If you ever ride motorcycles, it's good to keep things consistent. It's not good when you try and make a fast stop and grab mostly your back brake (or your clutch on the MC) when you're intending to grab the front. The downside, being a north American with "moto" braking is that if I ever ride someone else's bike, or play with one at a demo day or whatever, I'm constantly skidding my back tire.

Yall are awesome together. Blake's energy bounces off of her more quiet personality. However, it makes everything she says more impactful. Y'all are total opposites but in all the best ways 😆

Jen did great, she was a good sport with good basic instruction tools by Blake. Slow speed skills were heavily emphasized at the California Highway Patrol Motorcycle Officer Academy. I was a city police officer and attended their two week in house academy and was surprised how much emphasis they placed on learning to ride and control your bike at slow speeds. In fact, at the end of the segment, we had a "slow race", the winner is the last one to the tape and I won it! Anyway, I immediately saw the importance of Blake's instruction, it's like you are learning to go slow to go fast.

I just started last year, the first group ride with my hubby and about 10 strangers went OTB and head bonked a rock. LOL..Got up, dusted myself off, asked him if I was bleeding from my forehead, he assured me I wasn't, though he was pretty pale to be sure. I got back on my bike and started off again. If I had turned around and went home I wouldn't have found the love I now have. Still have mental issues with that bridge, but I just ride elsewhere. :)
