Coming from a fully-rigid mtb (is that now a "flat bar gravel" bike?!) to my first full-sus bike this year, I'm still disproportionately overjoyed by front suspension and dropper posts. I reckon everyone should occasionally ride rigid bikes on natural trails to appreciate the benefit of the progress that's been made and now taken for granted!
@OwenBikeNerd2 күн бұрын
Fully agreed - rigid MTB bikes can be a real hoot on the right trails - and also agree that once you've ridden with a dropper and suspension its harder to go back to the trails without - and yes it is an excellent reminder of the progress we've had! Cheers Owen

they aren't common sadly but you can find 3 position shocks and forks (like the current fox factory SL line) I've got 2022 fox ones bought on sale and locked they barely move like 1 pinky finger thickness sag and barely move when pedaling I did nasty ascents on it 15-21% and high elevation on road or hard trails and you don't feel the pumping there's no reason to buy a hardtail other than cost obviously that upgrade (on a full susp bike that had horrible entry level rockshox) made with end of season prices still cost me around 1100USD the middle setting makes you go faster than a hardtail on bumpy trails (strava medals a plenty after I upgraded) as it has a bit of pumping but in exchange your pedaling cadence is much smoother even if you are already a spd rider how can i explain this...your bottom bracket has less up and down so you pedal on a more stable "average height"

Doing a lower leg service on my front fork. The feeling of getting back on the bike after even just cleaning up the cartridges and lower legs makes my fork feel like new again. Love it. Doing a sealant refresh on a tire and hearing the beads pop into place after tire reinstall is an honorable mention.

Hardtail with a rigid fork! And dropbars! Salsa Cutthroat - mine is running 2.4's withan SRAM AXS Eagle mtn drivetrain (38t chainring with a 10-52 cassette). It work *great*.

Sounds great! Drop bar MTB's can be awesome on the right trails - also yes to the chonk 2.4 tyres - lots of very tuneable air suspension in those! Cheers Owen

Fun part with shimano groupsets is that you can get an XT shifter (which not that much more expensive than the base deore) and pair it with a deore groupset and just like that you have a more "premium" functionality for cheap!

What brings me joy on my bike? SIMPLICITY! riding a hardtail with external cables, a lockout on the fork, a sorted saddle, 1x 12 gears, reliable brakes. Take the bike out of the shed and ride, no shaking linkages, no complicated set-up, no hours of extra maintenance...just ride. Pure joy!

I have to admit that I would enjoy all of the new/old items with new features. The one thing that I would disagree with however is Merino wool.I've worn it for lots and lots of years, and have used it as a layer under something that can breathe...most of the time a vest. I live in the mountains of Maine, so whether it's on a bike, nordic or downhill ski's or snowshoes, I've never had an issue with overheating or being wet from sweat. I also realize that we are all different., As for frigid bikes, have always had a rigid mtn bike, and my fatbike is rigid as well...Anyway, the fact that we can choose to use or not use these innovations is incredible for sure. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah the high volume pumps helps a lot, they just chuck in so much more air per pump - I use the Topeak JoeBlow Mountain X - that with right amount of rim tape - and lots of Tubeless tyres will easily just pop into place! Cheers Owen

What bike related tech brings you a disproportionate amount of joy?!
@tim__sadler2 күн бұрын
Not sure there is any one part that gives me more joy over another - so easier to ask what hurts the most when it doesn't work (or isn't present) and for me that is the dropper post 100%. Ride with it broken or ride without one and realise how awesome it is.

How I ended up with a flat bar gravel bike... 1) Purchased a Cannondale topstone 4 1x 2) as a mountain biker hated drops with a passion. 3) Proceeded to install flatbars and mtb hydro brakes. Its the best for railtrails and around town riding. Great for riding with the kids and family.

I’ve found E3’s shrader valves the best purchase this year, and actually has brought unexpected joy to my life. Like Owen, I switch between multiple sets of tires throughout the year, and those valves allow me to use a relatively small air compressor to seat any tire with ease. Haven’t cursed a tire install this year so far! 😅👍

AXS all day long. I have a deformed right hand and shifting is a pain with mechanical shifters because the reach is a little too much for my stubby digits. Solution? I fitted AXS, put the wireless pod on the left after converting it to left hand use and inverted the button functions. Sorted. I have DI2 on the road bike and shift with the top buttons on the hoods. Electronic shifting is a Godsend for me.

@Anna: I am all in for durability. I am shifting to Shimano Cues as the components wear out. atm only the 11 speed Deore cassette is left. Well, i am still waiting for Shimano to release the already leaked Cues STI shifter. so i can convert my gravel, too. Also for durability reason, i built up a custom steel full sus bike with coil suspension front and rear :D

I'm more enduro and everything mountain orientated but gravel bikes are for gravel roads and basically I think they stay functioning best in there element. IF! i owned one i'd use drop bars and a fast tire setup and make sure it accommodates some extra water and tools for this would be for distance not fun or bumpy terrain but still better than a road bike on country lanes ect. depends where you ride and what you wanna do I think, the gravel bikes are kind of all over the place on specs and are confusing people where they belong best

Bib armoured shorts please. I'm getting older and things get hurt when I fall off, so I like having protection on my hips and thighs, but most shorts seem to slip down and armour in the wrong place impinges on pedalling and doesn't protect well. And even more important, the people behind me do not need to see my crack. Perhaps armoured under shorts that clip into bin outer bib trousers?
