Good call. Obviously the existing fuel pump module was not OEM however, had it been, often you can buy only the fuel pump itself and replace it by itself. Mush less cost but in this case, too much was wrong and a new assembly was the better way to go. Often, fuel pumps only fail due to folks driving until the tank is almost empty which cause the pump to loose its cooling factor and lubricity from being above the fuel level for extended periods of time. In those cases, just the pump is needed as long as the shop and customer agree. Some shops might fair for the whole assembly due to warranty reasons to their customers
@stephenbonesteel6642 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Except I have had a supposedly new item on e bay that somebody bought the wrong item . Turns out to be a different part # all together. It fits but electric value are not right. Now I always compare the two and return if different. I now have a snow blower starter that fits an 8 horse but will only crank a 5
@snoopdogie1872 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't buy just the pump. I just replaced a fuel pump because the fuel level sensor went bad. I pulled the tank, and the whole top of the pump is rusted out. It was bad enough that once i pulled the pump out of the tank, there was a rust spot inside the lid of the pump assembly. I'm pretty sure the hose attachment points on the top were weak enough that I get a pin hole in one just by pulling the hose quick connect off. I'm just glad I replaced everything because I would have had more issues by only replacing one piece.
@Garth20112 жыл бұрын
@@snoopdogie187 Well, if the other parts of the fuel pump cartridge are failing, it only makes sense to replace those too. Did I say to ignore other damage occurring?
@snoopdogie1872 жыл бұрын
@@Garth2011 The issue is that if one part fails, most of the rest of the parts are not that far behind. When you have to drop a tank, instead of accessing it from above, replace everything and know you won't have an issue for a long time.
@Garth20112 жыл бұрын
@@snoopdogie187 If it's not your money, that makes a lot of sense. However, fuel modules are generally expensive, $400+ or so. A fuel pump itself is $40. Most of the other parts are stationary non-moving parts except for the fuel gauge float are. Once the assembly is out of the tank, surely you will do a visual inspection and determine the condition of the other parts. If all that is bad is the pump, you are throwing away money to "just replace it all". Those pumps are wear items. Some of them last a few months and other may last the life of the vehicle. Most of the time, a fuel pump is needed during a 10 or 15 year cycle on average. The other parts do not need replaced as they "are not far behind" as the remaining parts don't wear so unless they won't pass a visual inspection, they are good to continue to use. It's really a shop/business decision and how they will serve the customer. The idea of installing the complete assembly would be a method to help with a shops warranty on the repair vs. replace whats bad at the time. I have seen some shops replace a top radiator hose and not the lower and some suggest to replace both at the time. That makes sense since they are both about the same age and wear has set in.
