This is a review of the GMC Safari or Chevrolet Astro Van. The Safari and Astro vans are very similar General Motors vehicles, powered by the 4.3 liter V6 engine. These vans are big enough to hold a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, haul 8 passengers, or pull a 5,000 pound trailer. If you want to buy a used GMC Safari Van or Chevrolet Astro Van, this video will answer your questions. They are good vans. I love mine.

My family had one of those Chevy Astro Vans. It was red and silver 1986 and it had a red interior. My father took it to some place and they added mud flaps for the rear tires, running boards, a roof rack, and a ladder on the rear door. It was a CL model. It ran forever gave us no trouble at any time. Traded it in 1994 with a 155,000 miles on it. Would do another one it ran great.

+chris smith These vans were great for big families and small businesses. They run forever with very little maintenance, get decent gas mileage for what they are, and they are more functional than any other vehicle on the road for hauling people or things.

They did it's a very rare option. I may even make a You Tube video and show everyone just so they know. The leather seated Astro/Safaries are like a rare precious animal that were very few and far between. When I found the one with leather seats for $5,000 I said that's it done deal don't see one of these everyday and off to Canton, Ohio I went.

Awesome video, you have a great sense of humor and an awesome van. As a kid, I grew up in a van prejudiced household; we were told to avoid "those vans", especially the no-window/tinted models. Now that I've matured and learned the error of my ways, I want one of these as a shit hauler.... seeing your dirtbikes shoehorned in there... wow, do you think I could fit a sportbike with it's mirrors and fairings removed in the back there? This van would be perfect for me on track days!!
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 9 жыл бұрын
It should fit. You may have to strap down the suspension and remove the windshield to get it in. In the video I mention how tall the back door hole is, so you can measure your bike and see if it is below that. I sold the van for $700 a few weeks ago, so I know you can find one cheap. I bought a 4x4 truck to replace the van. They did make 4x4 versions of the Astro and Safari vans, so if you drive in mud and snow, that's the way to go.

Our van doesnt really have any problems that you mentioned. 320000 kms, and nothing has been replaced yet, except for battery, and fuses. The roof doesnt fall down at all, it is securly up there, and the paint never peals off. Paint still looks like new, and it hasnt been replaced yet. Also, you dont need the seat things, it comes with metal clips attatched to the botom. Also our door handles are built pretty securly. Pretty sweet ride you got there, nonetheless. The stereotype never reached here. If you see a guy in an astro, you wave, they will wave back.

My parents had a 1994 Astro, then a 2000 Astro. Both were very reliable from what I can remember. Took them both on many long road trips with no issues.The 2000 had some electrical problems right after my dad bought it new, but never had another problem & my mom mainly drove it for 9 years & 100k miles. I learned to drive in it as well. Good times with those vans.

Did your parents buy them or did they lease them instead? And did the 1994 have a front passenger airbag? Funny because my parents had a 1995 Dodge Caravan (1995 was the last model year before the Caravan had a major redesign, and 1994 had been the last model year before the front of the Astro/Safari was given a new look) and then had a 2000 Dodge Caravan, which not only was the same model year as your second Astro, but was also the last model year before the Caravan was given another major redesign!

Hi HHHBLN what's happenin'. I finally got everything put back together on my van and it runs really good. No hesitation and SMOOTH. I'm really happy. I didn't get to the wires because I have to take the wheels off to get to them, the way I want to anyway, but I know they are old. It gets up and goes right down the road at 75. I think I could bury the speedo if I tried a little bit. We're in the middle of ice storms up here in Oregon right now and I don't have a garage. So until the weather warms a bit I'm not diggin' into too much more on the old babe, brakes, diff oil change, etc. But I have BIG plans for her!

I live in the mountains, and we have some snow in the winter. I am looking forward to seeing how it handles the snow. @@42luke93 it’s a midivan. But in reality, the Astro brought an end to the 1/2 ton g10 Chevy van in the early 90’s due to the astros similar size yet better spec numbers. Also available as awd, and with a subframe all while equipped with the same 90 degree 4.3l v6, the Astro had a larger gas tank so could it could run further on a tank, it produced around 35-40 mor hp, and I think 50 ft-lbs more torque, capable of pulling 5000lbs, it was the better vehicle.. Their simply wasn’t a need for the 1/2 ton g10 anymore.

I had a brand new jeep ranger turn out in front of my 1987 astro at 45 mph and I was totally fine. I don't wanna brag but it was also the only time I didn't wear my seat belt. I want an AWD version bad! I personally know 3 people who have well over 300k miles on their Astro and Safari Van with little issues, besides the EGR. As for the smoking, it was the valve seals. This is common in late 80's to mid 90's GM v8 and v6 vortec engines, especially when they sit. The seals get dry and allow some oil seepage.

I drive a 1994 GMC Safari AWD slx that has only 151, so far I've had to replace the alt, water pump and simple things like belts and oil of course. Brakes, until I changed out the pads the thing was a death trap! I changed out the old power steering fluid as well and while it's old, there's no rust really on it. After fixing these various things I now have a solid if slightly 'creepy van'. The sad part is these vans are not really creepy. Heck, I don't even have tinted windows. My kids ride with me and I get looks. It's true, I love children. Just not enough to do anything stupid. I do however enjoy this vans power. Certainly I can say there's no denying driving one will also force good driving habits. These things are not light, very well built. It's not like driving my dodge at all. Ironically I drive this one to keep the miles off that one. I think GM engineers would have done that van better by designing the the front floorboard to dip a little. There's plenty of room to have done it. Many of the vans gripes could have been easily avoided. If your tall, have motion sickness or got large feet, this van isn't that fun. But I've never seen one broke down, or totally rusted out. It happens I am sure but these vans are reliable and built like a tank.
@hoohoohoblin

It is a great reliable machine overall. I agree about the foot room. My feet are size 13, and I have some shoes I couldn't wear while driving because they are too wide and my gas pedal foot would get jammed under the brake pedal. I've seen some videos of people off roading with AWD Astro vans, and they do really well. I always wanted to get one and try it off road.

I have a 1997 that's on it's very last Legs. It was a great Vehicle, & I hope to land a not too badly rusted 2003 to 2005 to replace it. I learned the good & bad points of Astro/Safris from an ex Gal pal who had a 1989 for a few Years. She adored it...used to Sing about it as She drove around. Loved it that much. She kept breaking Door Handles off too. My 97 never had that trouble. My problem, I could not keep Brake Rotors very long, & no matter what drive Belt, regularly squealed as I drove. I liked you last comment. Give the Astro Van driver a hug! :-) Very good idea!

Terrell K Wow so VERY few '89's left! Last I saw one it was parked in a lot and holding up a big advertisement. My 97 conked out 2 weeks after my last comment. I searched a long time but finally found a good cond 2006 (Oct 2005)? Safari in good cond a cargo van Not "quite" as much "spunk" as the 97 had, but it gets the job done. You should look into having the intake manifold gaskets replaced as all the Vortek 4.3's have this trouble. My '97 gaskets went out at 250,000Km If they blow "inside" it can instantly wreck the engine. Also keep an eye on the radiator tanks. Plastic, & warp/crack over time, & leave you in a pickle. Same with the engine & trans cooler lines. VERY fragile & s/b replaced. I am about to have all mine done next week (all oil lines) Otherwise they rock. Once you fix the iffy parts of this van it will just go "on & on" You will wanna sing to it also! Oh also have someone replace the orig hose clamps. They rust or crack, & the hose can pop off while you are driving.

The rough running was driving me crazy, and I installed a lot of different parts. It turned out that I had a slightly bad spark plug wire or two, so sometimes all of the cylinders weren't firing, and other times it ran fine. New plug wires and a new cap and rotor can make a big difference.

+Kanggoo they never made a V-8 version. They made some four-cylinder versions the first couple of years, and then after that all of them had 4.3 L V6 engines.

I realize your question is 5 years old but I live in rural Michigan and I own a 94 Astro ext awd. It’s not full time awd nor is it a locking differential type manual controlled 4x4. It’s a RWD van with a viscous fluid operated transfer case. The TC ‘s viscous fluid reacts to the rear wheels spinning and engages the front wheel drive for awd performance. It’s a interesting invention and giving that my 94 is 27 years old in 2021 with 194k miles and the awd operates as it should I’d say it’s also quite durable. The van is amazing in the snow. It’s hard to spin the tires for more than a fraction of a second. The engine weight on the front wheels also help steering through snow and my 94 is also standard equipped with an abs break system. These beasts where designed for Michigan winters.

I have had experience with the all-wheel drive system in the Chevy venture minivans. It's the same subframe that was used in the Astro Vans. You want to stay away from the all wheel wheel drive versions of the GMC Safari and the Chevy Astro Vans. The same also applies to the all wheel drive versions of the Chevy ventures and the Chevy Uplanders. The all-wheel drive system that they used in those vehicles was not reliable. My van was purchasing 02 brand new and in the 15 years that I had it the all-wheel drive system had been serviced about six times. Stick to the front drive in the uplanders and the ventures and the rear drive in the Astros and The safaris.
