I’ve had Mine since October 2014 and I never leave home without it. In fact I just Registered it again for another Two Years of Operation and I am just about (before February 2022) to change out the Battery. Whilst I have Mobile Phones and Two Way Radio, the PLB is My Last Resort for Rescue and Help.

There is also a KTI brand plb. Also Australian made but smaller in size and longer battery life. (15 years I think) roughly the same price. Worth checking out as well if looking at purchasing a PLB

Even though you must register the unit in your home country can’t you use if you travel abroad and need a PLB?

G'day again Brett. So without exception all PLB's & Epirb's all go back to ( communicatedirectly to and ate monitored by ) Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) in Canberra. So after you purchase a PLB and register it ( which is a requierement in Aust ) when you register a PLB in Aust you nominate your contact details ( Sat phone if you have one, your Mobile ( you can choose to add sundry information like what other communications you might have like HF & or UHF ) & the contact details of a friend, family member or next of kin who might have some remote & and or rough idea of your possible location ( You can also update your location or planned trips online / when / if you have internet purely for the purposes of a cross reference check.) When a PLB is activated AMSA will make 1 attempt to contact you & 1 attempt to contact your nominated person this all happens in a matter of a couple of mins after which the big red button gets pressed & Thunder Birds are GO.😊 AMSA will launch the 2 x nearest emergency services to your location both from a fixed / rotary ( usely rotary ) & from a ground based perspective ( all be 99% of rotary have repel / winch capabilities now anyway ) but sometimes a ground response make be closer and able to respond quicker. ( I.E. the local SES or similar ) In Vic its always a dual turn out or response both from both the Victoria Police ( Vic Pol ) using the Eurocopter AS-365N-3 Dauphin 2 Vabre & Ambulance Vic using the AgustaWestland AW139 also known as Helicopter Emergency Medical Services or (HEMS).for short regularly the SES will also be turned out There's an excellent video on the Ambulance Vic AW139 operations located at kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2PEaZWGhKeXhpY They are based at Essendon, Bendigo, Warrnambool and the Latrobe Valley. In NSW it is a bit is a mixed bag of lollies with different organisations such as well as the NSW Police there is also the SES & the VRA From a rotary rescue there is NSW Ambulance service who operate both thev Augusta Westland 139 & the Eurocopter 145 Life Flight who use the Bell 412, AW 139, BK 117 Westpac Air Rescue use the BK117 In Tas the Westpac rescue chopper a BK117 is operated by the Tas police service. I don't know much about the other states unfortunately . Anyhow hope this gives a little bit of insight to what happens if a PLB is activated in a genuine emergency . Rgs Wayne. At the same time AMSA will also contact the nearest air traffic control to establish the possible likelihood of an aircraft in or approaching the area of interest to establish the possability of them being able to receive the international analogue aviation distress frequency of 121.500Mhz AM

Certainly a lot goes on behind the scenes Wayne. We're pretty lucky to have so many resources to rescue people. Would hate to think what the response times are for some third world countries that don't have the luxuries we do. thanks.

What if one travels all over the world? It would not be economical to buy one for each continent. Anyone make a universal PLB? I know there is (was) an issue with most GPS engines that it takes time for them to determine the satellite constillation to let the device know where in the world its located. I might assume they have preloaded what to look for in each region to cut down on time needed to determine region.
@RoamingTheOutback
@RoamingTheOutback 3 жыл бұрын
You can use this PLB worldwide. It's only that the correct unit must be registered in your country with the relevant authority. For some reason they don't allow units purchased outside the country to be registered in Australia. Any activation worldwide, the emergency services will contact Australia for your registration details. Here's a quote from the GME website: Beacons are detected world-wide by the global satellite system, COSPAS-SARSAT, and are detected from anywhere on the Earth’s surface if they are deployed correctly. It is recommended you contact your chosen airline for guidance on carrying distress beacons as every airline and airport have differing requirements. Please also note that some countries consider Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) carriage and activation illegal on land. Refer to the COSPAS-SARSAT website for the appropriate SPOC (search and rescue or SAR point of contact) for the country you are travelling to and contact them to confirm you are legally allowed to use your beacon. It is worth noting that the search and rescue response in each country will vary due to different levels of SAR resources and capability. It is recommended that you check locally the sort of SAR response you can expect. This will also depend on the weather conditions at the time the search and rescue is being conducted e.g. day, night, visibility (low cloud, fog, snow), high winds etc. The rescue coordination centre of the country where the beacon is detected will coordinate the search and rescue response, not Australia. AMSA Search and Rescue will only provide the registration details, if known, and any other information it gathers from emergency contacts. AMSA will request information on the progress of the search and rescue.
