I love how competitive boths legends are and how tough Hikaru is on himself but also how his game seems to change after a win. It’s almost like the win gives confidence which let’s down the pressure a tiny bit ( he is playing the Goat) but then his game becomes almost artistic in a way like a dancer or painter letting inspiration come from the paint brush or the symphony. The play looks so effortless to the audience like one was born out of the womb dancing, painting, or born a grandmaster. Then one faces reality and realizes the incredible work that must have been put in to be so effortlessly masterful. When he Hikaru lets his full instinct take over in bullet and starts having fun I think he is the best in that category. Though magnus did seem to be testing some late game endgame tactics . Obviously against the best. Wonder if Hikaru’s mindset took the whole endgame assessment as a challenge. Also ik im just probably thinking way too much into it lol . They lose me in the first 5 seconds. Hikaru is listening to music the entire time which is just bad ass.

Okay, serious question now for yall… Where do we rank Hikaru among the best chess players now? Serious question… cause idk anymore. I know he’s not been as consistent in “official” OTB classical tournaments. But can a guy literally be *this much* better than everyone else in TWO separate time controls - winning every meaningful tournament he joins, and consistently beating all the best players - *WITHOUT* being seriously looked at as possibly the current king of chess? He’s even beating his arch nemesis Magnus with consistency this past year. Sure, Hikaru’s a slight notch behind the Dings and Nepos of the world in classical format. But he still puts up a great fight and could give any of them fits in OTB classical. Like, the matches would be close; the gap isn’t that big. Meanwhile the gap between Hikaru and *ANY* of those guys (barring Magnus) in blitz or bullet is so profound, it’s honestly unlike anything in any professional competition or sport. And then he spends his “days off”, after winning these tournaments, streaming blitz 😂. I don’t think anyone’s gonna surpass Hikaru (or even come close to him) in online speed chess anytime soon. Unless he lets off the gas for a couple years to let people catch up.
