first there was no knight, it was bishop. if you play bishop g5 earlier, then pawn f4 ruined everything. so you must stop pawn from moving to f4 by placing white bishop to f3, and to put bishop to f3, you need to move the rook first. after rook move, if you straight playing bishop g5, the f4 pawn will fork both your rook and bishop... so there's nothing wrong in hikaru moves

Have you ever tried playing against stockfish up a queen?

He would pretty easily win. Playing rapid against the Komodo engine up two pawns he drew three games and lost one. Stockfish is slightly stronger, but not that much. Bishop or knight odds would probably be enough. Though queen for two minor pieces could be interesting

it can hold a very dangerous file from d5 which is what hikaru used it for but i think pinning the rooks was the better option, it's possible he overlooked it but in either case white is winning 👍
