Pattern recognition. There was a study that showed GM's had the same memory on average as the general public and from many MANY hours of practice have trained their fusiform gyrus, which is responsible for face recognition, to chunk chess positions and recognize chess patterns. So this super memory (not really memory but chunking or efficient short term memory e.g. how you read sentences) doesn't really transfer to other skills, and once you attain it you probably wouldn't think it to be anything special, and you'd know this feeling if you've ever achieved anything. It's common to ask yourself, "This, this is what I sacrificed so much for?" after achieving what you thought would satisfy your life in unimaginable ways. Note: According to a study, the minimum level of intellect for chess mastery is around average and above average for numerical intelligence, which contradicts the hypothesis that one would need above average spacial intelligence for chess mastery. This makes sense since after all, advantages are gained from numerical tradeoffs. Becoming a grandmaster may require above average intelligence, but not extraordinarily high. That is, elite level playing requires more creativity than what one can gain from positional and tactical theory. In any case, correlation does equal causation and the correlation between intelligence and chess is moderate to low, one study showing that GM's showed on average an average level of intellect. Becoming a GM also requires the means to compete in national and international tournaments as well as the will to spend a significant portion of your life on chess, since it is rare for a GM to earn their title without studying theory and games for thousands of hours. It is black and white thinking to believe that to enjoy something, you must be one of the best at it, when in fact simply doing well may be more fulfilling.
