My thinking on the initial position is that black had this nice pawn chain that was keeping the dark-square bishop at bay (among other advantages), but with the knight having access to e4, it would attack the d6 pawn and potentially come to g5 if the queen moves away of if b5 is supported in some way, so the knight was clearly the more dangerous piece. That told me that Rxc3 was likely to be a better choice than fxe3. "Hold my beer!" LMAO!

Im new to chess and i really agree with the to take is a mistake rule I never really thought about this. as a new guy my main objective in the early and even mid it to trade or take pieces, I usually find that check mate is too far out from focusing on. Im definitely trying out new techniques to set up check mate now at more risky costs.

IMO, neither the white knight or bishop can bother me much at this point, (2-3 moves later maybe, very possible). He is going to be busy defending his castle most likely. A simpler explanation for us C players: If you can take one piece and keep another opposing piece hanging to a pawn, then do so. Now your opponent's choice is to retake your piece or save his other piece. Situation was different here because Black was only retaking a piece so material was even, but it arises so often in amateur play that it's a principle to keep in mind: capture with your pawn NEXT move, capture with your piece THIS move (especially if your piece is under attack).

I see it this way. The pawn is a single use weaponry, and after the hit, it can't get back and just waiting for death or worse binding up own pieces to keep defending it. The rook can hit and run and attack many times.

in the last situation, i like to take w/ the knight to draw out the queen because then you have your opponent's queen floating around the board where it can be bullied by your pieces and eventually make a blunder

I am definitely a low level player, but can someone explain why Qf5 is not a better move in the “to take is a mistake” section? It would stop Ng6 which forks the bishop and rook, whereas Qe6 lets it go through. I don’t understand!

Do you have an algorithm to find the best move in chess? Something like: (1) nutralized your opponents advances/active piece (2) consider foward moves that are forcing such as checks, captures, threats, (3) improve/activate your worst piece (4) calculate your opponents response with these same three steps Am I missing anything? also, is there a simple acronym to remember all of this when Im playing chess?

Yes it's a bad idea and common mistake. White replies Qe3 and follows up with Bc4 and Nc3, preventing Black from ever playing ...d5. Black will suffer all game with a backward d pawn.

Doesn't make total sense for this newbie. You claim the bishop is forced to retreat because there's no squares he can advance to, when he literally has a whole open diagonal in front of him, short of taking the pawn on a7. Why not b3? Now, you may mean he cannot protect the bishop in any forward position; if that's the case, you need to state that. Not all of your audience is following your thought process, and I think some conclusions not immediately apparent are being taken for granted.

In the first example, the one you are referring to, both White's dark square bishop on e3 and White's knight on c3 are under attack. After Black takes the knight on c3, which is the best move, there are only two safe squares for White's dark square bishop, and they are d2 and c1. The entire e3 to a7 diagonal is not safe for White's dark square bishop. Note that the dark square bishop cannot travel to b3, and the b6 square is controlled by Black's a7 pawn.
