In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares the most common chess opening mistake after 1.e4. It occurs in the Three Knights Opening, arising from the moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3.
A staggering 17 million chess players have played 3...Bc5 as Black, making it the most prevalent chess opening mistake in this position. Unfortunately, only 10% of the players, playing with the White pieces, knew the right way to punish this mistake.

Hello. Would you do a miniSeries (playlist) on how to put 2 players (kids and adults) to train the finish game? (Or whatever you think is a good to train). My 8yo son learned with me the moves and we do play together. I have this idea of teaching my son the EndGames, like one has a king, the other has a king and a rook, or two rooks, or a queen against whatever (always have the king. The idea is to finish off aka end games). I asked ChatGPT and Bard what would be a fun training method like I describe. They gave me some good but other where very dumb answer. What you think? It can also work for trying solo. But we need to know what works I started to play in September 2023 and i think chess will stay for all my life. Just started fresh, 78% Win ratio in the last 90 days, crawling slowly from 259 Elo to 580 Elo..........

Thank you GM Igor. For the puzzle, I'd consider ...black goes bf3...if white doesn't blunder it by moving away his knight on e3, then my next plan would be to attack that knight by combinations of pushing the blacks f-file pawn and e-file knight. I may find my win here as black. Cheers

I would be playing Bf3 so that king cannot escape and white cannot nring support on h file. Bf3 followed by Rb6 and then Rh6 ttrying to mate white on h2 Added. I tried this on board. Bf3 will not work as black can play Be2 trying to exchange bishop. So Rb6 is the only move that works as white has to give up the bishop to prevent the mate.

My first thought was knight f5, but white playes f3, blocking black bishop and protecting g2 by his queen, then what? Rb6 seems better, either you loose a bishop or get checkmated after rh6. After rb6, i cant see anything better than f3 again for white to stop mate on g2, but now the rook simply takes the bishop on a6. Up material. Is this the correct line or there is another line where there is an unstoppable checkmate?

1...Nf5 doesn't really threaten anything (After 2...Nxe3, 3.fxe3, White's queen is protecting the g2-square) so it gives White a free tempo to play, for example, 2.Rfe1 followed by Bf1, securing his king and - regardless of who does or doesn't have a subsequent endgame advantage - taking the wind out of Black's mating attack. However, after 1...Nf5, 2.f3 is an outright blunder, losing the e3-knight for nothing.

As g2 is the natural mating position; which is guarded by the white knight on e3. The g2 square can also be guarded by white moving the pawn on f2 forward to f3. So black bf3 seems the best move as a black bishop on f3 can not be easily challenged by white. White can not guard against both of blacks threats to bring the back knight on e7 to either d5 of f5 to challenge whites knight on e3. Once the white knight falls black's queen gets checkmate on g2.

No, actually it's Rook to b6 and if black moves the bishop anywhere or defends it in any way checkmate is unstoppable because we sacrifice our queen by Qxh2 and after the white king takes back, rook to h6 check king to g1, and then rook to h1 is checkmate with the help of the bishop. If they try to stop the checkmate, we win the bishop on a6 for free.

I don't get why a player would do knight takes knight after your knight takes that center pawn. If I am forced to play that position as black, as soon as you take that pawn, i'm going to do bishop takes your kings bishop pawn to check your king. you then must move your king to the second rank which prevents castling. From there, I'm going to start launching pieces at your king as fast as possible, saccing my knights in the process. Really I would not do that opening for black though. I prefer something similar to the kings gambit as black, to get rid of some pawns and allow the rook into the game fast. in order to more effectively chase down that king before white has time to develop. I know... it's probably not that strong even at mid level. But I think better than what black is doing here and way more fun! XD I don't disagree with your theory at all. I just really dislike that opening for black.
