Hey parker, I just wanted to let you know that the code at 3:06 is what's called A2S Spoofing, where you hook the information that your server sends, changes it, and then sends it off. This method has been patched by not showing the server if they are spoofing. It was patched over 2 years ago.

5:54 I've known about Zeeptin since late 2014, and used to be friends with him. I was server manager for his SchoolRP server, back when that gamemode was popular, and I don't know what happened with his ULX installation... but he didn't have it installed properly. It was so badly implemented that you couldn't execute any staff commands. You couldn't ban, jail, kick, do anything to people. I constantly had to ask him to restart the server, so ballpark, that would occur around five to six times per day. He also had a program that would spam his Steam friends with messages of his server IPs telling them to join, and he tried to get me in on that too. Not surprised he would give this kind of response, shows that even years later he's still incompetent at running a community.

I tried working with him on his SCP-RP, but when I asked to assist in code as it wasn't that hard, he felt like it was a personal attack which then started a sequence of events that lead to it currently having 0 players now. If you take someone else's code, you credit them, simple as that. Just don't let your whole code be ripped from someone elses, especially with Lua which is such an easy language. Which it sounds like that's exactly what he did.

From what I recall it started really heavily 10 or so years ago, and ramped up until ~2016. Servers don't tend to use bots but instead encourage mass AFK - especially for staff. Superior used to have a document on how to start GMOD headless on PC startup and connect to the server. Around 2017 there was a big problem (Superior and some other larger players) actively spoofed server information. This didn't change the player count in-game, but they would put up fake servers that showed low ping and appear to be in your region, some also spoofed the displayed player count. This increased the traffic that went to the server, they would join into a server with 200ping and 40 players instead. You used to only be shown servers in your region - not sure if this still the case. From what I remember, the main reason for increasing playercount in the earlier days was to get your average player count up so you could gain spots on GameTracker - I don't think that is as important as it was. I unfortunately know more than I should about this as I used to be senior on SuperiorServers and a few other communities, that was almost a decade ago, I am now an actual adult...

I used to play a good bit of gmod, but 99% of my time was on TTT, I attempted to play DarkRP and on like the second or third time I joined a server some weird ass child was a kidnapper role and yoinked me into some alley and started to roleplay rape me and moaned into the mic. I killed myself and was banned permanently for fail rp, never touched darkrp again. That shit is stuck into my mind bc as a like 14 year old I was surprised to be put in an admin sit, explaining to an admin I shouldn't have to sit through listening to an 8 year old moan on the mic while I'm restrained and can't move. And the admin actually sided with the kid, that wouldn't have been a problem if it was a minor punishment, but it was a legit permaban lmfao.

Yeah the bot issues suck, makes it almost impossible for my once large now small server to get any players. I started my server back in 2015, the first month was quiet but I started to gain a good few numbers, by mid 2016-2018 the server was pretty much constantly full, sure I had donation stuff but nothing that was too pay2win, even had a then small but now very large youtuber as a Co owner, was crazy to see my server competing with the top dogs back then. During 2020 I got greedy and made my server pay2win, lost a ton of my playerbase and closed down after a few months of nothing, literally no players would join or even stick around knowing that they would have to pay money to gain anything, closed it down in 2022. I recently started my server back up again after a couple of years. This time I have removed donations, instead I'm opting for a player progression approach, just level up your character to access higher end jobs, craft overpowered weapons from rare materials found in certain areas of the map, or just unbox with in game currency. Even the pointshop cosmetics I have made so players can either buy points using in game money or just get a point printer. This time I'm giving it my all to just make a fun server I enjoy. The issue however is these bot servers making it impossible to get any players on, I have a small amount of people from the older days who come on now and then but getting any new players is hard man. To any new server owners looking to get into DarkRP, please don't over monetise your server, getting greedy will just ruin your servers reputation. Make something you enjoy playing yourself 😊

No bots, no paid custom jobs, no paid loot crates, only 2/3 supporter tiers all moderately priced and permanent, with an unincentivized option to donate more for regulars who just wanted to support the server since there was no monthly subscriptions. I was a Division Leader for Icefuse Network's CityRP in 2017. This is a common practice I see by many servers, specifically in IFN, we'd encourage all of our staff to leave their computers on to help boost server recognition, resulting in at least 40-50 AFK players constantly. Sucks to know it's only gotten worse and there are legitimate bots now.

2:41 That SAM command "bot" calls the default "bot" command which does count toward total used player slots but it does not count towards player count in the server browser. This command has nothing to do with the fake/afk accounts.

@@parkerrYT the script you demonstrated modifies the A2S_INFO source query response. while this "works" in your local network list, it requires the server to not have a GSLT registered to it, and gmod requires servers to have GSLT tokens in order to show up in the server listing. so no servers are actually doing this because then they wouldnt appear at all. the source query system which uses A2S_INFO is really old and is only used when you click on a server to view the player list. the new system runs through the newer steamworks system which authenticates all users so spoofing it isnt possible

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm aware you're not the biggest fan of the community I run (GarnetGaming), but this video hits SUPER close to home, and I was very happy to see it posted. All the competition in the browser for Garry's Mod now is riddled with servers employing alts accounts that are idle- and this is a two-fold issue. Firstly by misleading new players as to the true scale/activity on the server, but secondly, all servers allowing this are faced with p2w and destroyed economies, seeing as they're impossible to achieve when a select few (only takes 5) players are able to gather a 10-fold output from printers, defend their bases with 10 lives, and the list goes on. Communities that have genuine developers who are wanting to improve their community and Garry's Mod as a whole are failing at alarming rates, in favor of servers that use a plethora of content off of gmodstore (a hub for buying recycled Garry's Mod addons) and enforce heavy alting. At numerous points on my own community (which has been at the top 5 of DarkRP for a full decade now) I have had to resort to banning players who utilize alts - as they were INCREDIBLY disruptive to gameplay, only to watch my server fall behind in rating/population, due to competing with servers who sustain 30-50 AFK accounts at all times of the day. Rubat who is the developer for Garry's Mod has gone out of his way to ban such communities in the past, but they have since returned. I would love to name those, but I would personally prefer to avoid controversy, I do have the proof to back my claims. There are servers out there who do farm players with "real" computers. Any server with a "auto mine" Minecraft section was usually using this tactic. Some servers recently got caught and got banned for a few days (Smokes and a few others). Action will be taken against them if people report them. There are also other methods as delaying the disconnect time from a player, boosting your player count but that requires binary modules. TitsRP has real players though. I don't know why they AFK for so long but we auto-kick them once the server reaches a certain capacity.

this isnt a new development in general tbh, its been going on since online gaming started existing, for instance Roblox, literally 70% of the games require you to afk to progress, even for games that are pvp based they still have a afk area or server attached to the main game so you can get rewards for your electricity bill. Its just a overall scummy practice and theres nothing to be done, and it makes more money to roblox and the game creator if a premium member on roblox afks in the game because it produces premium payouts which makes these practices even more profitable therefore more incentivized

i started playing around 2013-2014 and back then you could actually have fun the admins were very minimal, people governed themselves i remember on DarkRP getting a mayor to issue arrest warrants for anyone i asked him to and i kept going around arrested everyone until eventually half the server was outside the police station wanting to kill the mayor, this would never happen today the admins would have teleported me onto a roof and gave me a lecture on how it's not realistic to have a corrupt mayor and in real life the mayor would sit afk in a park somewhere. the last straw for me like last time i ever played this game was around 2016 i got banned off a popular rp server because i looked at the building i just got killed in because since im a new person i wouldnt have known about it so just looking at it (no one was in there anymore and i didnt even go in) means i broke the rules thats how bad the admins were getting and whenever the admins got off the whole server became a deathmatch server owners killed darkrp sadly, i already seen the writing on the wall in 2015 when every server i was joining had a shotgun that was a one hit kill, range of a sniper rifle, fired multiple pellets at once all doing max damage and it costed real money it was the most pay to win thing ive ever seen in a fps game, its now what i use to measure how pay to win a game is, gmod shotgun being the far end fringe of pay to win, the end game stage lmao

I started playing Dayz, and i found a server that has 125 pop out of 127, so I join, and bam I am in a queue of 40. I wonder why? There is no way that when i decided to join suddenly there are 39 other people as well felt like joining the same server as I am. After 1 minute I was num 1 in queue. Joined the server, checked the party list and guess what, 30 players. So what they do is they fake the pop count to make it look legit, and put you in a fake queue so that you are more willing to pie VIP to bypass the wait time. Joined another server that had around 97 our of 100, and I was 4th in queue, took me 15 min before i could join and there i counted all 99 players. Some servers are just faking their shiet, i blacklist them right of the bat.

yep botting has been going on for years now as 7 years ago i did own a perp server was not a big server was just a lot of friends and would get the odd random player joining for a bit then sometimes they would come back tho lot of the time due in the day when players would have work or school the player base would be around 5 and in the evening time it would be anywhere from 15-24 players tho the server was a 80 player server i think we only did get over 40 players 4 or 5 times it had no play to win stuff only thing you did get to buy with real money was some custom models that i had made and there was no vip rolls or anything but we would not get high on the server list due to the number of other servers who was botting there game after 4 years i ended up closing the server as lot of us had got older and moved away from gmod to bigger and better games tho i still go on there now when my son gets me to go on there to play games with him tho lot of the good game modes are gone down or just dead like flood was a good mode

I can imagine a server owner saying: 🤓 "Errrm you actuarry wouldnt know. (*pushes up glasses) You have never owned or operated a server as long as we have."🤓 Honestly though thats really deceptive, and I kinda agree with your video. Maybe you should host your own Gmod Dark RP server @parkerrYT? Honestly u might be able to prove them wrong and change the community for the better.

I'm confident mutiny rp does this. That's why I stopped playing. Just go on the server and try to look at the steam profiles of everyone who is afk, either it's a private account or an empty profile with odd names. Try adding them and not a single one will accept your friend request. It's honestly quite scummy and shows how much these owners are a bunch of desperate scumbags.

this problem didnt need light shed on it. its one of the many hated (but needed) problems keeping gmod alive. if servers stop doing these things and people see that all of the servers have like 20 players in the daytime and 0 at night, ppl will just stop playing gmod again

Theres a real security risk to doing this. Let's say you leave open gmod in the background and while your doing work, taxes, banking, etc. There are server mods that alot admins/mods to monitor a players screen.

here's why people go afk on SUP (one of the servers you showed): 1. HOURS Since hours are shown on nearly every profile extensions like the in-game tab, it's seen as competitive and somewhat prestigious. This has been a thing since the beginning of the server. Any game that publicizes hours will naturally be farmed. 2. REWARDS 15k hours rainbow name color, 20k hours name color for CWRP, titles, nick names, server milestone rewards, lootboxes, etc. 3. PASSIVE INCOME Why not keep your machines and markets up while your afk? ------------------------------------------------------------ Typically if players suspect multi-accounting bots, they'll report them on the forums.
