I made this map when I was 13 years old with help from a friend. Literally my first ever hammer project, I have absolutely ZERO idea why people played it back in the day, I think we only shared it in a forum and it got bad reviews (deservingly so). Its so funny seeing this here now. Fun fact: two years after we posted the map on the toybox we started planning our next map, which we never finished. So, 10 years later during the 2020 pandemic we decided to dust off hammer and finish our project, it's called "Welcome to Rothschild" and it's equally nonsensical as this one. Thanks for playing, long time sub of your channel :)

I was thinking, during such a map, a friendly NPC would be such a weird and scary encounter, like casually "Hello, sorry to startle you, but you shouldn't be alone around here" and after a while, of having this NPC around, no jump scares trigger, you lose sight of the NPC behind, suddenly the NPC is gone, randomly. That would be such a weird feeling.

The fact that GM has simple geometries makes the maps so scary. Maybe because even though human perception recognizes doors, windows, walls... they are so simple that the place becomes a surreal place as if it were a dream. I have the same impressions when I play some Atari 2600 games

when you mention a “haunted” attraction becoming haunted i know exactly what you mean. the city i live in has hundreds of caves, and one was made into a haunted attraction in the 90s. it’s been abandoned for a couple decades now and the structures are completely dilapidated now. it truly lives up to its name now.

One retro horror game you might like is Shivers (1995) An old survival puzzle horror game from a company that doesn't exist anymore It has a lot of creepy moments, but the puzzles are extremely complicated and a bit frustrating The game didnt age very well, but i still think the atmosphere is good

The tone on this map is great. The jump scares and stuff I could do without, it's just super cheezy, but it has that really like, autumn chill in the air look to it. Reminds me of halloween time, but also some late-ish nights with friends where you're out and the street lights are on but nobody's really around. Also kinda reminds me of Quake to a degree. Where it's visually simple enough to kinda be more symbolic of locations, which might make the atmosphere a bit more creepy since your mind is filling things in more. And yeah that source engine lighting.

The absolute *_restraint_* with its use of jumpscares... but, like, also... I mean, that one with the stalker teleporting across the room after just standing there; witnessing a past murder, with the figures disappearing as soon as you register what you just saw; seeing the aftermath of a systematic massacre of almost everyone in town... It paces itself and lets you stew, but it also knows how and when to catch you off-guard. It knows when you'll expect what, and it refuses to try anything when your guard is totally up. The creator must've had a *_ton_* of experience with horror.

It's kind of interesting how cheap jump-scares seem to annoy him on maps that appear to have a higher production value, but on older maps or ones designed to look like older maps, he enjoys them to the point of laughing when one really startles him.

I remember this map from Gamesomeness several years back. Was my first venture into Gmod horror, a hobby I still have to this day. Also made some questionable screenshots on it. No, they weren't NSFW. The contents were just uh... let's say, not mentally sound.

2:08 My own personal theory as to why that is, is because all those players didn't come from Half-Life 2 like you and I did, and they just wanted to play gmod probably because of KZbinrs or Twitch streamers playing it, since these two platforms were growing massively at that time. So, there's many young gamers coming into the fold who never played Half-Life before and dont know that Gmod is basically a mod of that, and that it inherits its "creepy" atmosphere. Kinda crazy to think that those kids are young adults now.
