Ring shields are one of those things I tried to make work for my ship to beat the Gimile but I had to scrap because it just wasn't worth it. They only protect the outermost block (oddly sub-objects are also protected). Between their fragility, volatility, and EMP vulnerability they simply are not worth the few extra points of armor.

Yeah, against sandblasting and explosive damage I think ring shields can be pretty epic, but even if you have a surface shell with HA that is boosted to over 100AC it still won't stop a cram shell so then one wonders, whats the point, for big battleships regular shields are probably smarter, unless it is a evasive frontsider.

​@@GMODISMthe devs nerfed planar shields to make ring shields more viable. If they didnt had that destructive explosion, ring shields would be worth the trouble

You dont need more than 2~3 ring shields per plane because, redundancy apart, ring shields have really heavy diminishing returns.

Ring sheilds are awesome for sub objects. :) they are based on the percentage of area covered of the main craft so you can get some crazy armour depending. On how much of your craft is sub objects. Oh and same applies for warp drives

Wait do you mean having ring shields on subobjects? Is that some kind of special hack?

@@GMODISMhaving your craft on a subobject because ringshields will apply boosts to subobjects but they only care about the area of your main craft

Could you guys elaborate further? Because ring shields rely on their planar orientation so what does it affect in sub objects?

ring shields just have that weird curve where they are not worth it and do almost nothing, until at one point after putting enough into one they become op and you end up with a ship that has 140ac heavy armor beams, granted only for frontsiders which are already pretty strong.

I never really use these, I have tried using them in the past, but they feel so unimpactful compared to planar shields, which are also a lot less hazardous to your own craft, it may be due to a couple of points of armor not being as visible as shells bouncing of shield, but to me they just don't seem to do enough for how expensive and hazardous they are, not to mention they can be disabled entirely with one lucky fragment or pac pierce.

They are very strong when it comes to explosive surfaces damage and thump/impact but yes generally the all purpose go to for me is also planar shields 🛡️

nice one but what about the slopes ? does the slopes still benefit from up/down and forward/backward ring schields?

Good question: so the initial angle does not really matter here, the direction of the projectile does, all surface blocks perpendicular to the shields surface is boosted in AC, slope or no slope, so having slopes is good because they can deflect as always, they are boosted the same way as flat blocks, hope that explains it!

I put micro-size ring shields (3x3) on the backs of turret caps. I dunno if it's effective because I'm a total n00b.

In the current meta of From the Depths, are Ring Shields even worth using? I've found Planar Shields to be mediocre at best, with their biggest advantage being the Laser Protection.

they're funny(a guy made a 100AC wood frontsider) but I prolly won't use em seeing as I do broadsiders and half brick frontsiders(not enough space for high enough AC)
