I would say there are more downsides to long campaign. Personally, I prefer not to have them long because I like to have concise character arcs. I mean the best TV shows do that, with short season, while these endless shows might be also enjoyable, but they usually go not as deep into character transformations. But sure, if your players enjoy it, then that is all that matters, for me however that is too shallow of an experience.
