GN Balasubramaniam | Shanmukhananda Sabha, Bombay, 1959 | #CarnaticTrio

As a concluding concert to our #CarnaticTrio series, we feature an iconic concert by a Carnatic Music sensation, GN Balasubramaniam. Balasubramaniam popularly referred to as GNB, has been a revolutionary during his era. He was a trendsetter who carved a unique style and school of music that birthed many legends under his tutelage. This concert is a 4 hour testament to GNB's revolutionary style of singing which includes a unique blend of Rakhthi filled phrases and Brikas. GNB has been accompanied here by two other stalwarts who enhanced the concert to great heights. The concert was performed for the Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, Bombay in the year 1959. The concert details are mentioned below:

One notable aspect of Lalgudi Sir’s playing is his stage presence and calm demeanor no matter what’s thrown his way from the vocalist. A rare combination of confidence and humility. He could grasp any musical idea and reproduce effortlessly embellishing the concert to new heights. Such clarity in Lalgudi Sir’s brighas to match the inimitable GNB. Pazhani Sir’s playing is legendary. Another gem from Vaak. I believe this concert was 1958 not 1959. There was a CD of this very concert released sometime back in 2008-2010. Vaak is serving the Carnatic music ecosystem at such high standard. We remain grateful 🙏

Wow ....All the legends to in top form!! What a treat. Did lalgudi use a different violin/ different kind of violin in the early part of his career.The naada seems to be completely different.

Grand concert....however I feel one krithi of SS perhaps Mari vere gati or palinchu kamakshi would have made the concert even better... unfortunately many stalwarts don't render syama sastri krithis in all concerts....off course this view may not be relevant now ....but it's a fact.....!!!

Nothing is impossible in music for "yester-year" vidwans. As such, they would sing Syama sastri krithis as well.
