GN Steve playing Pump It Up for a workout (HTTP & Orbit Stabilizer)

I've been playing various forms of DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and Pump It Up (PIU) for probably about 15 years now. About 3 years ago, I got a little more serious about playing PIU regularly for exercise and to improve. For those familiar with the game, I moved from about an 8-11 range to about a 14-15 range, then got stuck there. In the last 2 months, I finally got unstuck and improved to 17-18 or so. Other than biking, this is my main exercise. I try to workout about 4 times a week. It doesn't really show, but at least I'm holding steady or slowly losing weight. Biking has been harder for me to get to lately because the road trips are killer when I have such limited time. Really hope to improve that as we move into the new office later this year, but right now, it's easier for me to go do a pump session for about 40-60 minutes before going back to work.

Buying an old cab and restoring it is a less expensive option and would make some great content! Me and my brother were interested after seeing this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXLZaJiBr7epm5o Since then, we did it ourselves too; we bought a NX cab, and we cleaned it, upgraded the PC, upgraded to bracket-less arrows, bought an official PIU XX HDD and we now have an online XX Cab in the garage =D I'd gladly watch a GN Extra video of a restoration project like this, it's really fun

PIU remains alive in Asia/Oceania, North America, Latin America and some countries in Europe. That's probably due to the fact that Andamiro doesn't impose restrictions on who can buy their machines (including private owners), unlike Konami (who goes as far as charging arcades with fees for allowing cabs to use online services and download UPDATES)

@@gnsteve8846 oh! thanks for the motivating answer! sadly there's almost no machine anymore where I live in France, I'll also always have more of a connection with DDR be cause I'm a konami nut since their golden arcade/console era 85-2000 (when the BeatMania games got big), and DDR is packed with references (tunes, composers etc) but I'll be sure to hit one up if I ever see another one^^ It was a refreshing surprise to see you on one those anyway! you seem to have very varied hobbies, and to me that makes you more grounded as a person and it shows in your general ideology and you guys work, this is why I appreciate your videos giving real life perspectives too on products (like "this product is good, but does it really make sense to your usage and needs?, please do take enough time to think about this" or something) Any hobby can take you down the rabbit hole, and not everyone might appreciate to be brought back against potentially questionable lifestyle choices, still I think this is important as content maker to keep on addressing' I for one am very passionnate about how tech works and perform, but don't feel the need to change it until it's fubar or really underperforming for my needs. (I even do find the urge to revisit old hardware I missed on, like looking into Sharp X68000+midi, lately) Sorry for the rant, and keep on being you, a wholesome and critical person, is the best way I could put it with my limited english knowledgeable 😁

I saw you mentioned you wanted to get more exercise in and use this, and you wanted to lose weight and stuff. On its own this (DDR/PIU) is one of the best ways to do cardio. If you, say, added a weighted vest, you’d be looking at the most efficient possible general workout. Calisthenics + Cardio + Strength Training. Do it HIIT-style and you’ll be able to get in the most “holistic” shape faster than any possible workout. Make sure to wear shoes that have plenty of support though, using this as serious exercise has high risk of injury by nature because of the impact you’re causing on your leg. Also, go *hard* on protein to let your muscles build and heal as fat falls off. Also, tbh, if you do decide to do it weighted, that’s the fastest way to improve your actual non-weighted score. The “Rock Lee” effect is real. One of the dirty secrets of mid-distance runners is weighted burst training. If you were a 1-miler (~1600m), instead of sending you out to just run and run, they’d have you do 400m-repeats, 10 seconds faster than the 400m splits from your fastest mile time, with slow-jogs, or full-rest in between. So if your best was a 5 minute mile, you’d do 65 second (75-10), and pretty soon, your actual race time would creep towards 4:45 in a matter of weeks. And sometimes, instead of doing the “splits” faster , we’d do them up-hill, or weighted. I’ve been mindful of fitness for the past decade. In Highschool I went from a 240 “chubby kid” to a 150 varsity track athlete in 1 year and peaked at a 10:59 2-mile and a 1:58 800m using high-resistance to low-resistance, variable cardio with calisthenics. I even did PT with the local marines (There was a PT program at my local track, and they were taking up the whole track one day, so instead of going home, I asked if I could join for the workout), and a lot of the exercise was doing stuff like this, but in “full combat gear” where they’d have you wear 60 pound packs, and heavy boots while doing essentially what you do in DDR. They’d call them “diamonds,” where you’d be on your toes in gear, and go from legs-out, to legs-in, to left-leg-left-and-right-leg-forward (LL, RF) to left-leg-back-right-leg-forward (LB, RF) to LF RB to RR, LB, and then in reverse, over and over. Literally exactly like DDR minus the randomness and + weight. This was considered one of the most brutal parts of training. I regained the weight in college because although I used the most effective and efficient weight-loss strategy, I did it way too fast and was way too hard on my body. I developed searing lower-back pain and had to go to Physical Therapy and discontinue exercising. Keep in mind, I pretty much have the exact same build as you. The “Square” mesendomorphic build with both wide shoulders and broad hips. Anyways, after college, I took my time and went from 270 to 165 more slowly in a period of 2 years, focusing on slow, sustainable changes to diet, and focusing on getting the most out of as little workout time as possible. I’ve kept the weight off for the last 2 years and have since beaten all the records I’d had from when I was 19 at age 28. HIITs with high-resistance calisthenics like this is literally the best workout possible. Just be mindful, because I had to eat as much as 70g of protein a day to avoid injury, as calisthenics like this can hit every single part of the body, and causes stress on muscle fibers that usually don’t get stressed, and the body needs a metric fuckton of protein to both improve the cardiovascular system and repair every muscle in the body. I eat like 7-8 eggs a day, with olive oil. Easy to make, and actually not damaging to the heart/cholesterol levels, so long as I keep exercising. Most importantly though, I have way more energy than I’ve ever had in my life, and my ability to do mentally tedious tasks is at its peak. I’m like 30% more productive nowadays than I was a couple years ago in non-fitness tasks. I only workout for less than 2 hours a week (seriously, weighted cardio HIITs, or “interval training” is extremely efficient for people pressed on time). I do them in 3-4, 24 minute sessions, with an added 3 minutes of warm-up and 3 minutes of cooldown. But in those 24 minutes, I’m incredibly focused on the training. Going from 1-minute of near-all-out max-resistance to 1-minute light-recovery “jogging-pace.” The same could apply to any workout, spend a period of time going hard, spend a period of time doing the same either slower, or with less resistance (weight). Doesn’t matter the workout, as long as it’s both cardio-intensive and also varied (engages many muscles) and you do it in “intervals.” Those intervals could be anywhere from 1-4 minutes. Whatever feels good to you. There are many ways to improve that you can naturally progress into. You can do your “intense” intervals harder, or you can make the “recovery” intervals harder. You can do *more* intervals in the workout total, or make the “intense” intervals longer. It’s radically different from the cultural “norm” of making you feel like you have to just jog for hours a day, and it gives you far more control to do what you feel is right for your body. DDR looks even more promising given that it keeps you mentally focused as well. The #1 key is to always do your best, and give your body rest days. Focus on improvement, and let the weight come off slowly. I also regularly work with computers, and have made it a hobby, and also a side-hustle to make money (doing repairs and stuff on pretty much any electronic with a PCB). I like to build systems and do what I can to configure “dailyable” setups as best as possible, even if I’m not a hardcore OC’er. Also TBH, I legit listen to GN and Buildzoid videos sometimes while I workout because they’re highly informative, and the data/educational material can keep my brain focused. also, the 30-minute length is perfect. My next splurge purchase when money isn’t as tight is actually a large mod-mat and a GN toolkit when they next come in stock. Hop you can get a DDR/PIU machine for yourself! The investment would be more than worth it.

I never in my life knew what that bar was for. You should start training to challenge Linus in Beat Saber, that skill has to transfer, right?

I play "The Thrill of the Fight", and make sure I get in 90 punches minimum, up to 150 punches per three-minute round. Six rounds and I'm done lol

Only just heard of this one. How do you like it? Is it mostly forearm? Cardio?

@@gnsteve8846 @GNSteve if you sit on your punches(rotate hip through pop your shoulder etc) it will work most of the body and is great cardio. If you want to work your calves you can practice footwork (similar to jumping rope). I mostly use VR for cardio. They have a sensor you can hook up to a bike rower or treadmill, allowing you to use Google street view instead of staring at a wall or tv. Haven't tried it but probably will soon as the sensors are around 20 dollars. If you are going to workout in VR make sure to get a pleather or medical grade silicone face covering as the standard face covering will get disgusting and is hard to clean.

@@gnsteve8846 "The Thrill of the Fight" is a VR boxing game. It's usually about $10 on Steam. It's best to use with a lot of space (at least 6'x6'). The game will reduce your total mapped space by .5 meters so you don't punch out a wall or TV. So, it's cardio if you go slow in each round. I treat it more like HiiT training. Three minutes of fast and heavy punching. One minute rest between rounds. I don't play to "win" so much as just make sure I'm getting a lot of upper body exercise, and I try to move around a lot, even attempt to duck and move. You box against simple AI opponents. It was made by one person, and he's very active in the forums, and open about how the game was built. It's very, very tiring! I highly recommend it, especially because it's so inexpensive. It's not very complicated, but I do it for the exercise. Think of it as basically shadowboxing, but with some goals that you can try to reach while doing it.
