This is the second video in a series covering the basics of GNav for ATPL students. One of the first fundamentals to learn in Gnav is how to work out the distance between points using the departure formula. This video explains why the departure formula is the way that it is, and goes through some sample questions!
This series of GNav Basics also includes:
Video 1: • GNav Basics 1: Lat/Lon... . Refresher on Latitude & Longitude, and how to use your calculator's DMS button.
Video 3: • GNav Basics 3: Great ... . Rhumb Lines & Great Circles
Video 4a: • GNav Basics 4a: Conve... . Convergency (part 1): Earth Convergency
Video 4b: • GNav Basics 4b: Conve... . Convergency (part 2): Rhumb Line and Great Circle Convergency, & Conversion Angle.
As ever, if you've found this video helpful then I'd greatly appreciate it if you could give it a thumbs up - and subscribe to the channel if you're not already. And if you've got ideas for future videos, please leave them in the comments below.

Wow...finally someone who is a natural teacher. Thank you for this, it answered a lot of questions. I've spent weeks on KZbin going through countless videos trying to piece this all together, and I learned more in this one video, than all of the others ones combined. Very well laid out and explained. Thanks again!

Going less west is perfectly fine and it's how my instructor would explain things. More east = less west so you can determine whether added or subtracting. Great video Tom.

Shouldn’t shortest be added to the departure definition thus stating that departure is the shortest measuring distance between two longitudes along the same latitude ? Excellent videos, thanks
