Thank you so very much for this video and your explanation. I now have a clean gnome desktop where I can choose what programs to install.

Thanks. I am glad my video has helped you. Thing is Debian say on their website to install Gnome Core if you want a minimal Gnome desktop. But it's not because the Gnome Core package does depend on a lot of apps and does pull in ones that I don't want. Another problem is that Gnome have now bundled more apps into Gnome Core in Gnome 47 which is the version in Debian Trixie. I only just found out I could install both Gnome Session and Gnome Shell to get the minimal desktop without all of those apps. So that's what I will do in future if I install Gnome on another laptop. I found out about the minimal install from here:kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIuYm2WHmbKheaM

awesome overview of gnome 47 I personally love it myself!

Yes, gnome-core comes with gnome-software nowadays. As you mentioned, you can install the individual packages. You can run everything in a single command such as `sudo apt install gdm3 gnome-shell gnome-terminal gnome-text-editor` Are you reinstalling the distro on your laptop whenever you're doing most of these videos? If so, have you thought about getting a little more ram for your laptop and running a virtual machine or getting a second computer that runs virtual machines for your videos?

I have only just found out that Gnome Core is NOT the minimal Gnome desktop. The minimal desktop for Gnome is actually Gnome Session which also installs Gnome Shell. This brings in the Gnome Control Center the Gnome start menu and panels. Then you just install Gnome Shell Extensions and Gnome Tweaks to get the add on's. After that you can add what text editor and software you want. The Gnome Core package in Gnome 46 and 47 now comes bundled with a lot of software which is Loupe, instead of Eye Of Gnome, Gnome Camera, and many other things. In Gnome 43 it was not the case. Although it did have some software I didn't want, it was not many things. That has changed with Gnome 46 and Gnome have replaced Eye Of Gnome with Loupe which is a terrible image viewer. They have also added Gnome Camera also called Gnome Snapshot instead of Cheese. Gnome Snapshot doesn't work. They have also added Gnome Music to the Gnome Core Package and many other things that were not in Gnome 43. So now the only way to get Gnome without those things is to install Gnome Session and Gnome Shell. I could have done this with Gnome 43, but I didn't know that at the time. I can run virtual machines on my laptops, but the only thing that works is Virtual Box, which doesn't install on Debian Trixie. That's the problem and none of the other virtual machine software works. I found this video here which says that you only need to have Gnome Session and Gnome Shell to get a minimal install. So I tried it and it worked. The video is here although this user has done it from the server install with no desktop but it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIuYm2WHmbKheaM&t

So, to recap the video, instead of installing gnome or gnome-core, you can install the following packages for a more minimal experience: sudo apt install gdm3 gnome-session gnome-shell gnome-shell-extensions gnome-tweaks (she showed them as separate install commands, but you can install multiple packages at once) Other optional packages mentioned can be installed with: sudo apt install lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings She also mentions vlc, caja, qterminal, eog, cheese, gnome-software

Gnome Session is the minimal Gnome desktop. It also installs Gnome Shell but I did the "Sudo apt install" command for Gnome Shell just in case but it was already installed. GDM3 is also part of Gnome and needed in order to run it. But you can install Lightdm and use that instead. GDM is still installed as you cannot remove it or it removes Gnome. But you can just set Lightdm as the default and use that. Nautilus is a bare bones file manager that lacks many features. So I use Caja instead but you can also use Nemo. Both can be set as the default in Gnome. VLC is the best media player and better than Totem. I like the QTerminal as it has some nice features and themes. Unfortunately Gnome have replaced Eye Of Gnome with Loupe in Gnome 47 but you can install Eye Of Gnome instead. Which is much better and Gnome Software Center is optional in the minimal install. Again you can install another software center such as Plasma Discover if you want. Or choose not to have a software center and just use Synaptic. Debian advise on their website to install Gnome-Core if you want the minimal desktop but it's not. Gnome Session with Gnome Shell is the minimal desktop where you just get the desktop without the image viewers, media players and other unwanted software. You can then install the image viewer, media player and other software of your choice.

Hi Andrea. Thanks for your suggestions as always. I did the minimal install of debian Trixie with sudo apt install gnome-session but I had to google to find a solution in order to activate the network. I've found that you have to remove this file: /etc/network/interfaces. I was going crazy...

Hi Andrea! Do you have any advice for people wanting to switch from Mac OS to Linux? I don't even know where to begin but your channel is a great resource!
@AndreaBormanАй бұрын
I don't know anything about Mac OS. I don't even know what that desktop looks like but I would think it's the same as switching to Linux from Windows. With Windows you can just install Linux as your only operating system and delete Windows from the drive. Or install Linux alongside of it. I am not sure about Apple computers that is if or not the drivers would be compatible with Linux. As I have heard that the drivers on Mac OS are different to that of Windows but you can try. The best thing to do is to boot Linux as a live CD first to see if everything is working before you install.

I don't like Gnome's Taskbar at all. I use the Dash to Panel extension instead.
@AndreaBormanАй бұрын
You can use Dash To Panel to move the top taskbar to the bottom of the screen. I think that's what POP OS uses. I don't use Dash To Panel because I have Dash To Dock installed which conflicts with it. So you cannot use both. I don't mind the taskbar at the top and I also like the dock at the side like what Ubuntu has. It makes the screen look less bare and it has a shortcut to the Gnome Menu. There is also a start menu at the top where the taskbar is which comes with Gnome Shell Extensions.

I use Dash to Dock better to much junk being installed 😢
