OpenOffice is a great alternative. It's good for those who want a lighter LibreOffice. We used it at school, all my school computers had Linux (Kubuntu I think with KDE Plasma 3 at the time), we were taught how to use it with GIMP! I think more schools should teach kids how to use Linux!

Yes I have just started using it and I am getting to like it. On this computer I have OpenOffice on the other I have got LIbreOffice. I think both are the same the only difference is the appearance. LibreOffice has the modern that Microsoft Office has. OpenOffice has the old school look of Windows 98 Microsoft Office 97 or 2000 look. It's just a case of which one you prefer.

Hello Andrea, first of all thanks for your videos they are great second, Do you prefer open or libre office? I am always in between them.

I like them both. LibreOffice has the same or similar appearance to the modern version of Microsoft Office with the Ribbon Toolbars. Although the ones in MS Office are more so. Where as OpenOffice has the old school look of Microsoft Office 97 or 2000. They both have the same tools and they do the same things as the tools in Microsoft Office. They are just called different names. OpenOffice and LibreOffice Impress does exactly the same as Microsoft Power Point does. But they call it Impress I assume as to not use the same name as Microsoft for copywriter reasons. That's why they don't call it Power Point but it is for Power Point programs I think.

I don't like Windows 11 but I did like the old Microsoft Office 97 and 2000 with the animated Clippy, Rover the dog And Genius. Linux doesn't have anything like that because Microsoft Agent Characters depend on Active X and Internet Explorer which doesn't work on Linux. So trying to run them would be impossible.

Yes Openshot Video Editor has been updated to 3.3.0 and I have updated it. There are not many changes but you should still update. I always install the Appimage because Debian and Ubuntu don't have the updated version of Openshot. The one they have is at least a year behind. That's why I always download and install it from the Openshot website.

@AndreaBorman You can't go wrong doing that and I've already forgotten what the new features are so I suppose it's hardly worth a video on it. Personally, I use Kdenlive. I can use that and Shotcut quite easily, but Openshot I do have to admit I struggle with. I think it's because I'm a perfectionist when it comes to timing the transitions and how long titles stay on the screen.

@@StephenSE9 I am haven't got Arch Linux I am on Debian. Debian Sid to be exact. Yes they have them in Synaptic Package Manager but they are not the latest version. They are very old versions. The version of Openshot they have is 3.1.1 which is very old. The same thing with the other video editors. That's why I install it from the web. Maybe it's different on Arch as they do have the latest version. But on Debian and Ubuntu that is not always the case. It's the same thing with Linux Mint. They tend to use versions that they think are the most stable. But that is not always the latest version. Unless you use Snap or Flatpak then it might be different but I don't like those. I like to have the Deb packages. So I don't have Flatpak or Snap installed.

I might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that open/libre office still comes installed on ubuntu desktop by default. I know it did on 18.04. I think you still have to select that you want a full installation with multimedia support etc... but I'm fairly certain it still comes with it.

LibreOffice does but not OpenOffice. Another problem is that Ubuntu and Debian tend to ship with older versions of LibreOffice. They don't always come with the latest one. Or they take a long time before they update it. That's why it is better to just go onto the website download and install LibreOffice or OpenOffice yourself. That way you know you are getting the latest version. LibreOffice also do an Appimage which is easy to install. That is another option and the Appimage is good for computers with low hardware. As everything is included in the Appimage. You just download it, make it executable, and run it. When there is a new version of LibreOffice you can just download the new Appimage and delete the old one. I have just done a video about installing and using the latest version of LibreOffice on Debian.

Libre Office and Open Office not being able to be on the same machine is one of those mini issues that a lot (not all) of us Linux users can look past, but isn't a reasonable shortcoming for non-Linux people.

That's because they both use the same libraries or software files I think. LibreOffice is based on OpenOffice and is a later version of it. Then the developers of OpenOffice stated updating it again some years ago and brought out new versions. But in the old days it wasn't updated as much as LibreOffice was. Which is probably why many Linux Distros don't include it in their Operating System. But you can install it yourself and run it.

It's not only possible but very easy. Instructions are available in the official installation instructions online which they advise you to do regardless to make sure: "Type "whereis soffice" from a console. If this is symlinked to libreoffice, remove the symlink. (see your favorite reference for how to do this) This will NOT remove LibreOffice, this will only disallow LibreOffice to redirect the normal OpenOffice binary -- typically /usr/bin/soffice -- to libreoffice instead." That symlink is not necessary for LibreOffice to function. It is just a over-caring act for "easier" migration from OpenOffice to LibreOffice, lingered from the early days of fork. That's why OpenOffice installation instruction ask you to just delete it *before* OpenOffice installation, to prevent mess up to both sides. Why it's still there is a good question, and it's definitely ridiculous, but it's also kind of trivial and not really a common usage case most will do anyways. The proof of that is that it's still there, if it was something people encountered often it wouldn't be. There is no reason to want both of the programs. Most will just get LibreOffice which is better and more compatible.

I first found out about Linux years ago back in 2010 when I was using Windows. I tried Linux Mint but at that time I had limited experience. So I stayed with Windows. Then 2 years ago Microsoft stopped support for Windows 7 and 8. I also found that Windows wasn't running so good. So I decided to try Linux Mint and it worked out so well. I decided to quit Windows for good. If I had stayed on Windows I would have had to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11.Which I didn't want to do. So my move to Linux has been a good move I think. Everything works better on Linux than what it did on Windows. Windows also took hours to update and sometimes the updates didn't install at all. I don't have that problem with Linux.

@@jakobw135 Well I was running Windows on a netbook. That could be one of the reasons. Also I was running Windows 8.0 not 8.1. Microsoft stopped support for Windows 8.0 a year or so before 8.1. The problem was I could upgrade to 8.1 because you had to do it though the Microsoft Store. Which is a Metro App and metro Apps don't run on Netbooks. That's why I stayed on Windows 8.0 because I couldn't upgrade though Windows Update. This could also be another reason why updated didn't install. Because I was on Windows 8 not 8.1. But many other users have also found updates slow to download in Windows. So I am not the only one who had this problem. Now that I am on Linux I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Can you not use flatpak LO so they don't clash? P.S. LibreOffice Draw is a 'kind of' pdf viewer - but opens them by default in 'edit pdf mode' and sometimes interprets the pdf file in an 'odd' way.

I am not sure as I have never tried it. LibreOffice do an Appimage version which you can get from their website. That might be all right because Appimages don't install on the system the way Deb Packages do You could try it and see if it works.

I thought I showed you those in the video. I have only just started using OpenOffice so I am not familiar with all of it's settings. The main Packages are the Document Viewer, OpenOffice Impress, The Math tool. Which I am not sure how it works. And the spreadsheet. There are also other tools to set up fax and web pages but I don't use those. OpenOffice and LibreOffice have the similar things that Microsoft Office has. They are just called different names that's all. The Impress tool is like Microsoft Power Point I think.

Yes you can. Microsoft Fonts is in Synaptic Package Manager on Debian. I think it is on Ubuntu as well. I installed them from the Package Manager.

ive used Open Office for a while as a Windows user who refuses to pay whatever amount MS is charging nowadays to have basic office functionality wo using programs in the cloud. i switched to Libre coz its more up to date and less clunky in some ways. but for someone who just needs to occasionally open a word/excel document, they do just fine.

Not long but it takes a long time to put edit it in Openshot Video Editor. Once edited Openshot saves the file to my computer and that is what takes a long time.
