@@taximaxi1431 So? I'm not interested in what he can play, I'm interested in what he writes. Or to put it another way, for the most part, I'm not. I don't like what he plays. How hard is it for you to understand that? The riffs for Jordan are cool then he plays that guitar solo that sounds like beeps - boring. A little later in the same track he plays a cool sounding wah guitar solo then goes for some gimmicky sounding slap guitar. I'm not primarily interested in a guitar player's technical ability - anyone with a bit of ability can nerd out and learn that. I'm interested in what he can write, and BH's stuff doesn't do much for me.

Over 2000+ comments and no one could said it better. Technically, Slash is nothing compared to with Buckethead. But that's not the point. The point is which one of them makes you feel something, a real emotion, that's the the true purpose of art... to make people feel something. And if you are like me, to whom both of them transmit real emotions, then there's no point in comparing them.

I think that to be conclusive there, you'd have to hear some repeated efforts by Slash playing in that highly technical metal/fusion style - and falling flat. The two things that we do know for sure are that for quite a few years now, in whatever projects and guest spots that Slash has been attached to, he's showed up on time, in tune, sober (enough...) and done quite the bang-up job on it, not overstepping but surely not too shy either. Another success in that line of work is that little "Eddie Van Halen" fellow. You don't hire guys like that just to play the fingerpecker'd acoustic rhythm parts on your Christmas album. Heck's bells, Slash even did a guest spot with the two luscious & bountiful DISCO bunnies who comprise "CHIC!" - although, supposedly he did receive some extra-monetary reward outta the gig... twank dit-dit twank dit-dit, yeah you'd do it too. The other thing we can be sure of is, if Slash DID try some real high-tech music and he totally screwed the pooch, WE ain't likely to ever hear it. I sure do hope you guys get your shit together soon and put ME in charge, here - one of the first things I'm gonna do is set up a gig with Slash and John PETRUCCI, jamming on some old Stones and Zeppelin.
@ImKevan

Slash can comprehend it, i'm sure he can play a bunch of it too, I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, i can play bits and pieces of both of their stuff easily enough and i can definitely comprehend everything Buckethead does, the reality is just that Buckethead has a level of technical skill when it comes to actually playing this stuff on a fretboard that a lot of us simply just can't get out fingers around, either because we just don't have the very extreme amounts of practice time required to actually develop that level of muscle memory, or we're just not that interested in taking things to such an extreme, because we do actually understand the time and dedication required to achieve that level of technical proficiency and we sort of just think, yeah nah i'll leave that crazy shit to the bucket man cuz i'm happy with where i'm at, ya know? This dude has LITERALLY memorized an entire encyclopedia of melodic patterns and scales and practiced almost every single one of them since he was like 17 or something, while the rest of us who are even considered "good" at guitar stopped and took breaks and played some xbox, this dude kept practicing, when we went to a movie with that cute girl down the road, he kept practicing, if anything, this guy is a billboard for what you can achieve on a guitar if you practice enough, his level of skill in music composition, that's somewhat different, but i'm sure, like me, that's also something developed along the way while developing his actual technical playing ability.

For me the all time great guitarists should be chosen based on a plethora of different topics. Their skill, their ability to write great riffs and solos. The lasting impression of their sound or tone. Their ability to be a critical part of all time great albums and tracks. How many future guitarists they inspire. And I could literally make a list. Slash for me is one of the greatest to ever do it in rock and roll. I think Buckethead is an exceptional guitarist! But so is Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Satriani, etc. my point is in terms of rock and roll Slash is an all time great for me. Easily top 20 when I’m making my list. Buckethead didn’t really do anything with Guns n Roses other than play tracks from the bands glory years. Like I’m not going to rank Ronnie Wood ahead of Keith Richards. Ronnie Wood still makes my list more than likely, but a guitarist’s CV is important when I’m making a list and Slash has one of the best

The people who say Buckethead has no soul have never listened to his music. I also can’t believe people would compare him to people who can barely play anything beyond the pentatonic blues scale, that’s someone who can do a good impression of soul but aren’t soulful. BB King and Muddy Waters and Johnny Guitar Watson did more than blues/pentatonic, they weren’t locked into a scale. They played sincerely and not to be liked. Buckethead is a virtuoso who leans into his skills and exercises his creative genius by bending the guitar to achieve different sounds that express an idea. He’s not a shredder and he’s not some Eddie Van Halen wannabe.

Fact... Buckethead CAN cover Slash’s work.... Slash CAN NOT cover Buckethead’s work... This doesn’t mean Slash is a bad song writer.... he’s wrote some awesome songs... but reality is Buckethead CAN play anything Slash writes... on the flip side... Slash CAN NOT play anything Buckethead writes... PERIOD

He may be able to play Slashs songs with his technique but he will never be able to recreate the tone, soul and feeling that you hear when its played by Slash. I can play alot of Slash stuff too but that doesnt mean I'm anywhere near the guitarist he is.

Robert Wieber you slash fans overrated his “feeling, soul” bullshit like he’s a David Gilmour type of player

I hate the fact chin dem gets bashed to the extent it does. I always felt like it was a powerful album and better is one of my favourite GNR songs

Will Hewson If Slash was on that album playing every song the same way all these kids would be saying how great it was. It holds up to appetite had a yada cuz that’s how simple people are no horizons. The truth is it does hold up to appetite and every single guitarist on that album is better than Slash.

TheCloudyGuy420 all I know is people laughed and mocked axl for years everyone was turning there back on him. i remember when the album dropped people at my college wouldn't listen to the record through fear of being shamed. it was so fuckin dumb...

Asking GNR fans to choose between these guys is silly question. Slash is one of the two faces of the band regardless of their virtuosity.

I've never really understood why people always have to compare everyone as better than someone else. Should just be able to enjoy someone's abilities or not.

Buckethead is the better guitarist, and I truly enjoyed his solos on the Chinese democracy album. As well as his live performances covering slashes parts on old classics.
