And Thomas & Stereo, I agree with your assessment of this speaker. I do know there is a difference between this one and the others I own, but when I sit down with any of my speakers I am just enjoying the music and not focusing on their performance. I am past that. I need to enjoy music and stop being OCD about specs and performance. Life's too short to do that all the time and not focus on why we listen to music in the first place.

I want to give a big THANK YOU for making this video recommending this speaker. I’ve been an audio engineer for 17 years and have heard countless speakers. I took a calculated risk gettin the 705’s for my room. And omg! These speakers are amazing. I was in love at first listen. The imaging and soundstage is fantastic. They scale like crazy and show when components aren’t up to par. All my producer friends have been quite impressed. Thanks again man! Keep making these videos 🤘😎

Very enjoyable review. I've now had a pair of 705 for about 2 years now and still enjoying these as much as anything else in my collection. I started out with them in my largest room where they sounded very good, but a little too much spacing. Having relocated them to a medium room is where the real magic started. I too ran them with several combinations of amps and dacs, because I felt that there was always a little more detail and integration hiding in these speakers. I had pushed them with a 7k setup, which didn't sound much better than a 3k setup as these speakers are somewhat forgiving and make lower end gear sound better than it should, but higher end gear not a huge jump as one might expect. I was noticing that the best sound was more a result of the DAC than any other factor. Amazingly, by far the best combo came from a solution costing less than 1k, which was a integrated tube amp by Peachtree. Now this only has 65W per channel, but drives them with authority. What happened is that suddenly all this very excellent detail could be head from the mids, the tweeter became more sparkling and the bass tightened up a lot. I can listen to these for hours without fatigue and prefer them most of the time over the assortment of horn loaded speakers in the collection. Also love the cabinets design, floor plate and binding posts on these Polks. Like you say, you can't loose on these. One thing however, I moved mine around from room to room a bunch of times and I think the way I was gripping the floor plate caused one of the bottom bass dispersion cones to pop up a bit. It was easily fixed by shaping it back down, but check them on yours to make sure they didn't come shipped that way.

So many people tend to focus on watts with these speakers. You do need some wattage, but I think current is the bigger factor in getting these to perform. They have dips into the two ohm range, and you need an amp that can easily roll with those dips. 100 watts (or more) can be enough as long as you have a high current and capable power supply.
@williekenk5 жыл бұрын
Also, any chance you'll be reviewing the Musical Paradise DAC? I've heard the MP-D2 and I really liked it.

Thomas, your advice was absolutely solid. I have been living with Aerial 10T's for many years, wonderful speakers. Simply for the fun of it, I bought (1) pair of Polk LSiM 703's and a pair of the LSiM 707's as well. I took the Aerial's down for a while just to have fun and enjoy the Polks. These are "wonderful" loudspeakers, and I made mine sparkling on the top end by adding a pair of Aperion Super Tweeters to both sets of speakers, the 703's and the 707's, now they are as perfect as I could ever want. The Super Tweeters sit right above the mounted tweeters and give both sets of Polk speakers a brilliant open and airy top end, sparkling, real, robust, they are NOT laid back now. Additionally, the Super Tweeters have multiple settings to taper or increase their effect, just a great move to add the Aperion Super Tweeters, they are now absolutely perfect. Just wanted you to know. I am using all top shelf Parasound HALO amplification, JC-2 BP Pre, and A-21+ amplifier, with Marantz SA-10 SACD player. People WILL regret not taking advantage of this Polk sale, I can't imagine why more people did not jump on this deal of a lifetime. Mine won't be sold, I can assure you.

Great video! As a former sound engineer (live sound) and an audiophile I found your description of the sound quality to be really useful (not always the case when listening to other audiophiles describe sound quality). I've always preferred a bit warmer (but still crystal clear) sound, I can't wait to find out if my 707's will live up to my expectations. I'll be pairing my front stage with an Emotiva XPA-3 Gen 3 when it arrives tomorrow, the rest (LSiM-702 and LS-900 in-ceiling speakers) will be run directly off my Yamaha RX-A2040 (this will be my first Atmos speaker setup although I've had the receiver for several years now). You've also inspired me to add an MP-D1 (or more likely a D2 for the ES9038Pro), though I'll likely wait a while to get my ear used to this setup so I can appreciate the difference when I add the DAC later. Anyways, great video, can't wait to check out some more. Hopefully your videos don't inspire me to spend all my money on sound gear.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean. Hopefully, the slight roll-off on the top end is to your liking. The speaker is quite big and can fill big rooms easily. You do need a good amp to control it. The higher-end gear you pair it with, the more performance you will get out of it. I would say the XPA3-Gen 3 should bring out about 70% of its potential as I had both at my home and I have tried them together. Now, please don't think of it as a bad thing, it means the potential of this speaker is really high. The only thing as I mentioned in the review, is you have to be ok with the top end and have enough space (You need to sit a certain distance because the mid-woofer is really high up else you will feel the mids are a bit recessed.) from it to really shine. I think they are still selling at clearance prices and hope you got yourself a good deal.

@@ThomasAndStereo so I got to demo my 707's a bit today. Just for fun I started by powering them with my Yamaha A2040 receiver in "bi-amp" mode. If it's 140w 2-channel driven I guess it's 280w bi-amped? Who knows. Put on Kendrick Lamar's "Loyalty" and immediately felt like the bass was going to kick a hole through the walls, no lack of power, that's for sure. Unfortunately, the mids were overwhelmingly out front. Male vocals swallowed the entire mix and the sound of the speaker itself in the cabinet was so present it was completely obnoxious and distracting. My first thought was, "Oh $&!@, I've been duped. The speakers are terrible and the best I can expect is damage control with aggressive eq-ing". Switched over to the Emotiva and wow, what a difference. I also found separating the speakers even further apart (from roughly 5' to 7') REALLY helps open up the sound and create a sense of space, decreases the tendency of the mids to dominate the highs. In general, I found the sound to be clean, there was decent separation, and decent clarity, but I almost always wanted a little more (except for bass, never needed more of that). On songs with aggressive, crunchy distortion I wanted to hear the clarity in the crunch a bit more. On songs with lots of layering it could feel a bit overly busy. However, I think a big part of what's happening is I'm suddenly becoming more aware of compression and mixing/mastering that is average. For instance, when I listen to the Spirited Away soundtrack (16-bit, 44.1khz) I was disappointed in the lack of air and separation between the classical instruments. It sounded like it was mixed and recorded in a studio rather than in a concert hall. But when I played a 24-bit, 48 or 96khz recording of one of Debussy's concertos the sense of space, air, separation all opened up. It was a bit emotional for me. I had the same experience when I played Lizzo's latest album at 24-bit. I forget which of the first 3 songs it was, but there's a digital "snare drum" trigger I could clearly hear floating about 3 feet above the speakers and right in the middle of the room that stayed perfectly present without impeding on any other instruments or vocals in the song. I also watched a bit of John Wick 3 with just the front stage and atmos speakers (still drilling holes and running cable in the attic for the surrounds). I was really happy with the absolute clarity of vocals, rain, small sounds like shuffling papers, overall tone, etc. I'm eager to explore it more once everything is wired in and I've had a chance to run Yamaha's self-tuning program. Anyways, I see exactly what you mean by being about 70% of the way there. I'm very satisfied with the end result considering the budget for this setup. I also see how a good DAC could really open up some of those tracks that felt a bit too much like everything was competing for center stage. In the meanwhile, I'm going to start looking into replacing my favorite albums with 24-bit versions and consider signing up for Tidal. I have an nVidia Shield connected to the receiver, so no need for MQA for now. One catch in regards to the DAC... my receiver (like most or maybe all receivers) only has analog pre-outs and good DACs only take digital in. Do I need a pre-amp to take the analog pre-out and convert it to a digital signal for the DAC? It's not all that critical right now, but for the future. I will probably upgrade the Yamaha first anyways. Newer receivers come with better audio processors. At least I can finally enjoy Atmos for now.

Another great review from Thomas! You do such a good job with every video! These are very attractive looking speakers. Glad to hear that they are more than looks. That and the way that they scale up makes them a very serious budget speaker. It really is amazing that there are such good bargains in the budget level! Unfortunately I think my room is too small for floorstanders and my budget is focused elsewhere at the moment. As you know I just purchased the Musical Paradise MP-301 tube amp and had to look for some efficient speakers to go with them. I did find a pair of slightly used Monitor Audio Bronze 2s for a good price and they seem to be a good match. The 90db sensitivity works very well, and with the tube amp the metal tweeters do not sound harsh or bright at all. The combo fills my room with very musical sound at about 9 o'clock on the volume knob. I've decided to go with the MP-D1 dac as well, having found users on forums who sing its praises and will also most likely match the dac to the MP Berry music server, as the build of the music server is quite extraordinary for its price. So, soon I will very likely have a system that is focused on Musical Paradise gear and I expect that it will sound very good for the price.

What is your opinion of them? I like certain things they do, but they don’t lock in the image quite as well as some of my other speakers. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a three way or they don’t use a waveguide like my other speakers. I’m pushing them with a Purifi amplifier so there’s plenty of clean power on tap. They do a much better job at higher volumes, I admit. These might not be to my tastes.
@Laissez_Faire5 жыл бұрын
You can’t always blame it on the front end. They have a great low but high-end are not great. What I’m noticing now is that there is a phase issue between the tweeter in the mid range. I’m gonna keep them because they look beautiful. Also the tweeter is so directional, almost like a ribbon tweeter but nowhere close in sound. I’m gonna try to modify these with a ribbon tweeter. Great video. You actually made me buy these 😆
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
Congrats. It was actually noticed by one of my friends what you said when we were using budget gear. Once we moved on to higher end gear, it was non existant. I am not sure it was phase issue that we noticed but it was a conherence issue with one of my budget front end. Now what you can do, given the tweeter is directional and they are so tall, assuming you are using the 707, put a few books at the back spikes. What will happen is that it will tilt the speakers forward pointing at you. Also someone combined it with the Aperion super tweeter.

There needs to to be more clear clarification of what type of an audiophile a person is for I find that really there are five classes of an audiophile 1. The natural where the frequencies are flat 2. The punchy bass 3. High Definition and detail 4. Bright and punchy 5. Variable audiophile but it all comes down to taste and how well the sound pleases the listener for it is how one perceives what is pleasant and meets his or her needs to enjoy the music
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
100% true. I touched on that in my video 'what speaker to buy'. Really depends on taste.
@precisioncolors19204 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo And I am now 60+ years old. I've been an audiophile since university days when I played around inside of the larger anechoic chamber in Canada at UBC. Only the NRC had something larger. Paul Barton had just started (PSB) and was using Philips drivers available at electronic stores. In that anechoic chamber I put together a minimonitor that got stolen from my car! I will tell you that your taste will change over time at different stages in your life. What does not change is how the speaker captures the character and emotion of the performance and how it is perceived. There are a lot of factors at play, not just tonal aspects and detail and brightness and warmth etc. What is common is that when a speaker sounds "right" whether or not it is a little warm or bright does not matter. It will still sound right. Many speakers despite their price fail at this. Frequency response can be not perfect and a speaker can sound right. Similarly a speaker that is wonderfully flat, might sound totally unnatural. This aspect cannot be taught but comes to the listener with experience over time. I think Thomas has reached this stage and Mr. Vintage is there as well. One BIG issue is that most people purchasing this speaker will not have them paired with top notch equipment. The other issue is that the crossover in this speaker has a hew shortcomings...it is not "audiophile" grade. But do not be tempted to "modify" or change out components unless you know what you are doing and have the requisite equipment. Thomas, I remember you played around with a supertweeter. Try using a supertweeter on the LSIM 707 with the supertweeter pointed to the rear or towards the top. NOT FORWARD. and then make a video. I think you'll be surprised.

@Anthony Martino 6 of them? With that much volume pressure, I think you can send people to the hospital if you crank it up to the max with these speakers!
@precisioncolors19204 жыл бұрын
@Anthony Martino The dual ports stagger the resonance of the reflex and achieve a bit of forgiveness in final tuning in real life production to obtain the best average "tuning" in real life production. The staggered resonance is expensive because it requires dual separate chambers. The LSIM I think is possibly a more technically correct design. I am thinking that Polk knew that to make the SDA technology not too complicated and costly required they keep the system 2-way in the key range required for the SDA effect. If you saw the crossover required for the SDA you'd understand. To make a three way with a midrange and crossover in the range and then make it SDA would have been too complicated. So they went for the 2 way and tried to extend the midrange and accepted beaming as this might actually help in the SDA...thus the turbine cone.

These are ideal speakers for many many people and being less refined than Focal and B&W is their advantage over them. Most people stream spottily or other services which offer music at 320 kbps. if you listen to a lot of pop or rock or genres that are not catering to audiophilia, then these are a better purchase as they will be more forgiving and those genres sound better on speakers that are less refined. Yes,, sometimes less refined is actually better sounding. I have had many music sessions with my Polk LSiM 707 and 703s with friends and they were so impressed with it I had 2 friends order the sets through Adorama and they are extremely happy to this day. I drive my Polk through my Harman Kardon HK 3490 receiver. An awesome pairing. And that integrated I picked up for $149 off of Craig's list. My entire 707 + Harman Kardon cost me $1325. Hi if you want to buy them new. They still have it at Polk Audio directly. www.polkaudio.com/on-sale Use coupon code KZbin707 for an extra $200 off (expired Dec 2, 2019) When I post my message up on my community page, it was $1200 for a pair of 707 and $450 for the 704. Sadly, now that the special is over, it is $1800 a pair with the coupon if you buy from Polk Audio. This is end of line so we don't know what is going to happen. Now, at the time of my video posting, there was still some at Adorama in the used section for less than $1200 a pair and in excellent condition. Sadly, we don't know when is the next sale or how much stock they have left. Check out TJ video at kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHjbmoxmetVoZ5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIebpGuweZmAl8U The prices I quoted in this video were during the sale period. Although they are no longer valid new, you still can get the LSIM 707 at Adorama about that price used. The LSIM 703 is a bit higher new. If you can try it with a good return policy and assuming you have some decent front end, you will be pleasantly surprised. If you are into that Focal sharp bright top end with a lot of detail, then these will not win you over. If you like the warm musical sound with incredible bass, then give these a try. For those who have not subscribed, plz take a moment to consider it.

According to Tom Carter, a customer service technician representing Polk Audio, the LSIM series is being discontinued. The Legend Series is the new "flagship speaker series". What this means is that Thomas is right. If you get a chance to hear these speakers at Best Buy and like what you hear then you know what to do. Take out your credit card, smile and enter your pin. I had asked Polk weather the Cassini woofer was the reason for the discontinuation of the series. NO: He said that according to the sales and marketing team, it was time to move to the newer series. It's a four way right? Those usually start at $10K. You gain so little from going from 3 to 4 you only do it when aiming for best possible sound. There is something called the 3 octave rule, in a perfect system no driver plays more than 3 octaves and the human ear hears 10 octaves. So you need 4 to obey the rule but that last octave isn't very important. You only go to 4 for ultimate level performance.

Hi Thomas it awesome you get to review all this high end audio. It be nice that you do a video and invite all your audio expert friends put them all in the room blindfolded and you play all different range of mid end to high end audio equipment and let see if they can separate the cheap to the very expensive. We do that and we even try to trick each others. For example, my friend would play me a cheap integrated amp but would show me a high end setup making me think that I am listening to a high end setup. So we take it one step beyond blindfold where we sometimes try to trick each other.

Only thing I'm worried about is the mid-range is pretty small on this speaker compared to the focal Aria 948 but it does seem to include a midbass driver which the Aria doesn't have it's just a mid-range ! Usually a speaker with a mid-range produces a sound kind of thin and not very chesty like from a male singer usually a big mid-range in my opinion always sounds best ! I've heard speakers before with a smaller mid-range and it always has this tunnel smaller thinner less wide kind of sound then say the aria 948! I love those speakers btw and the lsim 707 it's just hard to decide if this is a better purchase or not I can get my hands on a good pair for $1,900 Canadian from somebody locally in grey condition but the warranty won't apply for me since I'm not the original buyer. but I also have a pair of the 948 focals at home and they recently just went up in price I paid $4,000 flat for them new with warranty ! What I'm thinking is I have somebody that really wants them and is even willing to pay me $4,000 for them pretty much what I paid for them ! and out of that $4,000 I was thinking of buying these lsim707 speakers for $1,900 and saved the rest of the money but I don't know logically if it's better to do this or just keep the focal ecause a lot of people will say they are better ! Is it worth to do so and only save about 2000$ cad. or stick with the full Cal and no I have a better speaker that are also worth more money now because they increase the price online to buy it full price it's almost seven thousand something dollars I think before tax now ! it's hard to decide because I've already heard both of them before these two different speakers they both sound different and I did lots of a b testing and I always walk away liking the focal because the mid-range it sounds Fuller more wide more dynamic more detail and fast! But the lsim 707 it's hard to explain sounds a little bit more narrow a little bit less wide little bit less dynamic but it also has its own sound signature that like but cannot explain what it is I am hearing but I like them as well but what do I do? Save 2000$ sell the facal downgrade to the lsim 707 lose a bit of details but still be happy enough with more money in my pocket or say hey I have the focal that are probably better ? I know big message and complicated but if you could help that would be great.

Sorry for the late reply, I also got your email. The solution to your problem is straight forward. It is a question of priority. You have clearly state that the sound of the 948 is overall better. Sure the 707 can do some stuff that you enjoy. Logically, it is a choice between money and sound. If you prioritize sound, then 948. Sadly, no one in the universe except you can decide if the sound improvement is worth the money. You can explained in detail the sound you are hearing so you do know exactly the difference and most importantly, which one you enjoy more overall. I say overall because both speaker does something better than the other. You have to make a decision and just move forward. No matter which you choose, there will be some 'regret' and you have to live with it. Remember, life is short, your window to experience music is limited. Good luck.

Thomas & Stereo great replay ! What if it was a new case which speaker would you keep would you sell your focal 948 and save $2000 and get the 707 since I’m sure you’ve heard both of them? In your experience with speaker has better dynamics wider full soundstage more detail out of these two speakers? I’m also curious correct me if I’m wrong but the 707 is pretty much exactly the same as the 703 bookshelf speakers but with two subwoofer drivers? I’m also thinking maybe I should buy the bookshelf speakers and just write with a subwoofer I think that might sound even better than buying at 7:07 because in my opinion a real subwoofer will sound better than any woofer built in the speaker in the day because that’s the purpose to mess with the job is designed for if you think it would be better And sound quality wise to buy the LS I am 703‘s and run it with a nice 10 inch powered subwoofer instead of the area 940eights which way would you go this way if you buy the LS I am 703‘s you’ll save slightly over $3000

I personally will stick with the 948 because I love the highs of it, I will add a sub to add more bass weigh if I have to. 703? Nah, you will not get the scale. There is no substitute for displacement.

I've had the 707s for 3 days and the tweeters are making strange noises. Not blown but strange little sizzle sounds. Very noticeable on strings. I have pushed them pretty hard but not to the point of distortion. I love these speakers but I don't want to have to worry about turning them up. Time to contact Polk.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is not supposed to do that.

Seems like you have a defective tweeter, quite common if u search the Web. Polk can send u the new tweeter.

Tweeter on the way. My cousin owns B&W 802Ds and came over to listen to the 707s. He listened for a while looked over and said they sound just like the B&Ws! I was amazed and pleased!

Currently running Marantz SR5012 (100 w/ch) to 707 2-ch biamp. Thinking they can use more power but friend says Emotiva (300 w/ch) is entry level?! What do you highly recommend under 2K? Appreciate you and your channel!

Hey Thomas, love your videos. You talk in a way that makes the audience feel like you are conversing with them directly. It's fantastic. I have a pair of LsiM 707. Took me a couple of months to play around with their placement to get them to sing. At first I saw the potential but each time I move the speakers one aspect would sound better and one would worsen. It's only until I started to place them 11 ft apart with experimental toe-in that they finally started to sound right and now I love everything about them. I get the impression that the Double Impact are amazing speakers and could you share some thoughts on 707 vs Double Impact and how much better the Impacat is. Thanks
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I am not sure the double impact is better. I would say the DI is a more sophisticated speaker overall. Really depends what you are looking for. There will be something the Double impact will do better but not everything.

Thomas, thanks for the review. I haven't made the move on getting either a bookshelf or floor speaker yet, and I am kinda glad I didn't yet because of the review of the Polk and their insane price drop. Initially I was looking at a horn type speaker like Klipcsh 600m or Triangle. But after this review I am reconsidering. I am curious Thomas, what in your option are the most "flat"/ neutral sounding speaker available now. I just heard the Elac UniFi Slim Bookshelf speaker and I thought it was pretty neutral. It was the first time I heard Elac, and I was impressed. The only neutral sounding speakers I've heard thus far are studio monitors, I have yet to find an audiophile speaker answering this question. But the Elac above, still seemed pretty good. Still, maybe its my ears? I still would love to hear a crossoverless speaker. or an open baffle, I am so curious. I just don't have any place near me selling them....Any suggestions?
@ThomasAndStereo5 жыл бұрын
Well the Elac slim version is known to be bright actually. Try the Elac UB5 normal version. From memory, strangely the Sony SSCS5 at $73 now on black friday is pretty neutral. Those are 2 that stands out that I can remember. However, my question for you is what recent speakers you heard recently. Perhaps flat is not what you are really looking for?
@markd42925 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo Last speakers I heard beside Elac were JBL L100, liked a lot, but too $$$ bet be nice w/ equalizer. Heard Klipsch 8000 thru Yamaha, pretty cool, I think surprisingly neutral, probably slightly forward maybe. Totem Tribe 1, 2, but can't recall the sound experience, but I was impressed. But some Totems seem lacking in guts and balls. Also Triangle Speakers, horns again, much better detail than Klipsch I thought. Oh and SVS floors, not bad. I am curious about Tekkton....Maybe it's my ears? But so many speakers sound same to me, except for horns. Just really curious about crossover less speakers like DecWare's DNA or DM947's. I just want something with a deep sound stage, wide sound stage would be nice too, if had to pick between the two I would say I prefer deep...But also I love dynamics too. I'm hoping with the right preamp I could get a bit wider sound stage with my speakers if possible? I heard Adam Pro Monitors that had a deep sound stage that were at least 3 to 4 ft behind the speaker with nice separation, that was pretty cool. I just don't have many places around me offering neat speakers. I don't like B&W, or Focal, or Magnie's.

Well you definitely will have no problem driving the 707 but I am not sure it will be a true upgrade as the XT8F have pretty good reviews. Usually I tell people to jump 2 levels if they want to go for an upgrade. What is wrong with the XT8F? WIth 2 subs like yours, there is no bass problem.
