The irony being that about 6 weeks later I had also gone to Boulogne on the catamaran and heard DLT resign on air while sitting on the sea front listening to Radio 1.

DLT knew his contract was up and new Radio 1 controller Matthew Bannister wasn't going to renew it, bringing in a plethora of new voices such as Tim Westwood, Jo Whiley, Steve Lamacq and Danny Baker to replace the old guard, so he jumped before he was pushed. So did Simon Bates and Jackie Brambles (though in her case, she was moving to America anyway).
