Good day, my name is Matt, and I am so glad I ran into your channel on KZbin, you make the best shaving content out there. I grew up without an active father figure in my life, he and my mother were married, though, he chose not to do anything with me; this included teaching me basic things, such as shaving. My grandfather did his best to fill the gap, but he had stopped traditional wet shaving a long time before I got old enough to shave, so I only learned how to shave using a cartridge razor and canned shaving cream. I am super grateful to you for making these videos, as I am sure a lot of other men out there are, as I am 33 now, and I am just not learning how to shave the traditional way. You are always upbeat and helpful, thank you from the bottom of my heart, you have given me something I couldn’t have gotten elsewhere. I recently have been going through a lot of dark times, life testing me as it tests us all, and your channel has brought light into the void. I am currently using a Walmart safety razor, though I will be buying one from Shave Nation really soon, it will be one of the ones you suggested for beginners in your beginners video. Sorry for rambling, thanks again, and have a great day.

what’s the best shaving cream to prevent irritation?
@arturosimgherrera91774 жыл бұрын
Proraso sensitive skin
@PanchoKnivesForever4 жыл бұрын
A good start is the Proraso (White tube) for Sensitive Skin or even the Proraso (Red tube) for Nourishing the Skin - I feel my skin is even better after the latter one. Geo F Trumper is also really good - their Spanish Leather scent is my favorite. Art of Shaving sucks on my face, but honestly, man. Everybody’s skin is different. Products that are labeled “sensitive” may not work for you whereas others that are labeled something else may be even better for you. It’s honestly just trial and error till you find what works for your specific skin type, but following labels isn’t a bad start - just keep an open mind. Sometimes ingredients for specific scents can even be the culprit for causing irritation, so consider some unscented options, too. Im assuming you’ve got good practice in your shaving form, you’ve found the best blades for your skin type (from mild to aggressive), and the best safety razor (from mild to aggressive). Those are all important, too, but that’s why I always start out my friends and family with an adjustable safety razor and a sampler pack of razor blades, so they can figure that out faster. Anyway, (that was a tangent lol) check out Shave Nation’s Shaving Cream Samplers. They have one for Taylor of Old Bond Street, Geo F. Trumpers, Castle Forbes, and some other one. The first three I absolutely love for my sensitive skin, but for me my irritation was not only solved with better quality shaving cream but also a heavier safety razor, like the Rockwell 6S with Plate #3, it’s aggressiveness enough for me to get real close to my skin but not aggressive enough for me to press any harder than I need to because the weight of that safety razor is enough for me to mindlessly let the razor do all of the pressing for me. That’s just my style, though, and I have found that to work the best for me. The Rockwell and Muhle blades have been a perfect fit for me, too. I’ve found them to be on the sharper side but not as sharp as Feather, which is too sharp for me (maybe if I get better with my form I can get feather blades into my routine). But when I use a safety razor that isn’t adjustable, I always rely on Shark Blades to start me off, as Shark blades are on the milder side of sharpness, but no matter what safety razor I put them in (like my Merkur 23C - which is very light compared to the Rockwell 6S or the safety razor by Merkur being featured in this video, and most other safety razors actually), i more often than not get a nick-free shave with very little to no irritation, but the issues I have with sharper blades in lighter safety razors might just be a form issue as well for me - maybe Im pressing to hard when the safety razor is lighter - I’ll continue practicing. Anyway, to finish now, try more than one soap out, start out with Proraso if you wish (it’s very affordable compared to the other high end shaving creams), and then see which others might work well for you. Geo F Trumper - Coconut Oil have worked heavenly for many, too, with irritation issues. And some people swear how shaving pucks actually give you a more slick shave, allowing some to have less irritation that way, too. It’s big world out there, but it’s a really fun journey, I’ve found.

Right now I have the Merkur 23C for traveling, and for everyday use, I have a Rockwell 6S - an adjustable safety razor that uses different plates for adjusting. I'm thinking about replacing the Merkur 23C with the 34C, and as for an adjustable safety razor addition I am debating between the Merker Futur, Rockwell Model T, or the Rex Ambassador. Being a Merkur fan, I'd like to hear your thoughts if you have the time?
@randywallace77974 жыл бұрын
My 23c is my go to razor with green astro blades. I also like the 34c because the shorter handle and weight lets you control the pressure to fit your skins sensitivity. I don't own a Futur because I don't need anything more aggressive then then the 34c. I do have the Rockwell 6s and it is nice after you find the right plate for your face. It is still not as easy on the skin as the 23c or 34c. The Model T is just another glorified Gillette repo. It was a waste of money to me and I resold it on ebay. At one time I hade over 50 razors and 20 different blades. I sold everything and just kept the Mekurs, the 6s and a Gillet Slim. My go to blades are the Astro greens and the Feathers. For me the best shave still comes from the 23c.

@@randywallace7797 Oh, wow. Thank you so much for your input. You’ve made me more excited to work on my technique with my Merkur 23C now. Maybe I just need to put in sharper blades into it. I’ve only ever seriously tried out Dorco or Shark blades in my Merkur 23C. I only like using sharper blades in my Rockwell 6S. Hmm... super excited to switch things up now and see how that works on my face. I shave every day for work, so I mainly stay on the mild side of safety razor usage and keep once-in-a-while more aggressive shaves to specials events, date nights, etc. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
@randywallace77974 жыл бұрын
@@PanchoKnivesForever Go with the green Astro's and don't try for a BBS shave if you shave everyday. Do a two pass shave with a little touch . hard part to learn is let the weight of the razor do the work. The 23c is more forgiving so you can put some pressure to it if needed :) Good luck and don't give up :)
@PanchoKnivesForever4 жыл бұрын
@@randywallace7797 For sure! Thanks again for the advice. I've only considered retiring my Merkur 23C because I get nicked way more often than I do with my heavier Rockwell 6S, so I started to just see my Merkur 23C as cheaper/lower quality tool, thereby thinking it to be less effective at shaving. However, I've never seriously tried a sharper blade in my Merkur 23C - I was nicked in the past pretty bad by some. That was a long time ago, though. I've gotten better at my technique, so I'm excited to pop in an Astra blade now and see how that goes. I've been keeping my Merkur at the level of a Shark blade because it's given me the least nicks so far. I'll likely have to do less passes with an Astra blade, though, reducing my chances of nicking myself. It's definitely just my technique then if you're saying it's really great for shaving, which I'm sure it is. I'll keep practicing :) Thank you again for your input! I do want to enjoy my Merkur 23C more because frankly, the design, knurling, and light weight do feel nice.

I just wonder what the explanation Gillette would provide for their logo featuring a crocodile cut in half by the razor blade (and seems pleased by the experience). Maybe it's meant to imply that the blade will cut through the roughest beard in it path. [Then again, if it's slicing through the leathery skin of a crocodile, perhaps it's too dangerous for human use (and Feather blades are pale contenders). Wink, wink....] One individual on B&B pointed to a trademark link that suggested the blade might have been introduced by International Safety Razor in the late 1920s, but after seeing numerous wrappers for the blade (one including two sliced crocodiles), most do not mention Gillette on the label. It's not clear when Gillette acquired them, but they registered a trademark for 'Nacet' in the early 1950s, though it might have been as early as 1943. Gillette 'Super Nacet' blades (that are platinum coated) are supposedly made in China and sold in Malaysia and Singapore.
