1975 was pivotal year for the BMW brand in America. BMW of North America had just been incorporated to represent brand and the company in the USA. The famous "Ultimate Driving Machine" tagline had just been coined and to emphasize the sporting nature of BMW automobiles, BMW Motorsport contested the IMSA Camel GT Challenge with the iconic 3.0 CSLs. This is the story of that year told by the guys that lived it.

I drove my 1972 BMW 2002 up to Daytona for the 1976 race. I took a photo of the CSL that had "Peter Gregg Racing" on the front with me standing in front of his first name. We're not related. That 2002 is now in the garage and I drive my Korman stage 2 1973 3.0CS nearly every weekend.

I was at Laguna Seca in 75 for that race and was at Riverside to see them win I think in 76, a race that started in the day and finished at night. 6 hour endurance race. First and second. We got into victory lane for that race due to lax security. Those were the days. Owned 2 BMW's, a 74 2002 and a 74 Bavaria I got in 78. Had that Bavaria for 17 years. Fun cars both!!!.

Precisely where I was headed to comment, and you were commenting before they even got worse. They aren't listening as well as we'd hoped... although as I type this, they have done the throwback CSL which is at least an effort, if far too limited.

My dad was a car wholesaler back in the day long before the internet so I was around cars my whole life but when I first saw a 1974 3.0 csl I knew that BMW was different then any other car company and different than anything else my dad had brought home. It's just something you know but you can't translate it into words. I am a BMW fanboy long before that name ever came around and proud of it ❤🇩🇪

Great mini documentary! Fell for BMW’s when a sister brought a 2002 company car home, and i got to drive it ~ 1976. It was so different than American cars to drive, nimble and more direct handling. A friend of mines father had a 3.0 CS, which just looked marvelous. ~ 1973. In 1985 i was looking around and found an Italian grey market 1969 2800cs for $5000. It was a little rough, a bit of rust. But it was a version of my dream car. Very nice handling car! Beautiful Italian design influence. Had it for 16 years. Now, GT7 finally has digital versions of these cars to play with, 3.0 CSL road and winged. Great car to be passionate about ✨✨✨ These were designed and built with pride to last, and bond with the imagination, and create wonderful owner and driving experiences. Racing was an extension of the imagination and added mystique and perhaps more pride. E9 is special, a pinnacle of sorts for BMW.

I had a 1974 BMW Canary Yellow 2002 with Semperit 60's, Bilstein Sport shocks, Stahl headers, Ansa mid & rear exhaust, Blaupunkt stereo, Momo BMW wheel & the list goes on. It also had 2 / 2 Barrell carburators; sounds great, right? It was, they were; BUT, the BMW repair shop (Circle Tire Natick, MA) had everything EXCEPT the linkage ☹️. Friends & family say I have the best of stories; here's 1. I was told the car was "ready", once the Webers we're "installed". So, I went to pick it up. Paid the bill, went out to turn the key, fired up beautifully; combo new pipes & carbs sounded dynamite together. Until I gave the gas pedal. quick jolt. NOTHING!!! No linkage for the carbs, NO gas pedal either. Short of the long is I hit one of the mechanics up for a thin 15 ft rope that I hurt rigged through the 2nd small window that sat directly beside the driver's window. Why did BMW have such a thing? Well, I guess it was a " German thing"; they figured that EVERYONE smokes. You could crack the mini window, without having to roll down the standard drivers window. You are probably now, beginning to try & picture this rope, with a handle that sits in my left hand; that runs through the mini window out & hinder the hood tied to the carbs. You got it! You're probably hoping by now, the car was an automatic. NO! Yup, tug the rope, shift, clutch, tug, shift, clutch, tug & shift!!! I DESPERATELY AVOIDED BUMPER to BUMPER TRAFFIC; AT ALL COSTS,,,,,,,😅 😂 🤣. I'm glad cell phones weren't out then. Oh, by the way, I was on a will advise as far as the linkage was concerned from Germany 🤔 😁 ☹️. After about a couple weeks later, this girl from work asked to see me before leaving the building. So, I swung by her office on the way out the door. She asked me if I was single, I said yes. Question kind of made me nervous initially because she was married. She then asked if I would like to come by her parents house; where she, her husband & siblings frequent all week long apparently. Big Italian family, very social. I was kind of caught off guard; anyway I said sure, why not? As soon as I did, I immediately thought about my NEW car dilemma. I thought to myself: " Murphy's Law", 🇮🇪 Irish 💚 Curse ☘️, if anything can now go wrong, it will! The VERY first thing that can go wrong is I go to pick up this girl, she answers the door, she's drop dead gorgeous; I take her out to the car & drive around with her using my ise line as a gas pedal. While writing, I am trying to keep the story brief. I called, we chatted, we 💕😘 liked; we agreed to go out. It was May. Why I remember that I don't know? For obvious reasons, I pushed for as close to 9:00 as possible; DARK 😎, hide the rope! She asked if we could go out earlier (of course); reminding me that she's a nurse & works early in the a.m. So, 8:00 it was! I get there, & try to milk it with family & friends. Got some yardage out of my plan, but NOT ENOUGH. After about 20 minutes, we left to go on our first date. Oh, by the way, did I mention that at about 30 years of age; she was absolutely, by far, the PRETTIEST GIRL I HAD EVER TAKEN OUT. I need not mention the impact her physical being had on the situation at hand. In addition to being physically attracted to her; I also began to like her sense of humor, kindness & how genuine she was. Anyway, we both go to leave the house, I walk her to her door. I open it, she gets in & I shut her door. She leans over & opens my door. Huge, I mean freekin' GIGANTIC!!! Should I right now tell her I 💕💕💕 her & ask her for her hand in marriage??? Kidding. If you watched The Bronx Tale; I KNOW you are laughing very hard right now! Are you? By the way, Pam; my new girlfriend is/was a mirror image of Cathy Lee Crosby. I mean it. Blonde, 5'8, green eyes & a smile that just makes you melt. As far as the rest of her goes; well, being a gentleman I will just say that she was just very special from head to toe. She was as nice inside as she was on the outside! Ok, ok; the rope. So I start the car, ropes hanging through the small window; leaning against the driver's door panel. Rope handle is directly level with my left knee. Start the engine, give handle quick tug; creates slight rev of the engine. Backed up. Not easy with rope "gas pedal". Got away with it, so far. Through it in first, 2nd; eventually 3rd. Asked me if I wanted to go to the Mall, Natick Mall. She wanted to go to Filenes. She said she treat for ice cream, if I said yes. Pit begins to form in stomach. Why? ACCIDENT on RTE 9, bumper to bumper is now getting worse, by the second. Drivers window does NOT go down, no A/C ☹️ 🥵. Good news: It's getting DARKER by the minute & she isn't aware that my window does NOT go down. Bad news: she starting to notice how hot I am (no NOT that hot!), seeing me wipe my forehead more often. She asks me if I'm ok? She then observes my shifting is getting more & more clunky. Asks me if the car is ok??? I'm rapidly feeling somewhat cornered. The window broke a couple of days before I went over to meet her. The linkage, well, you know that story. Waiting for the parts. Will finish story tomorrow, going to bed!!!

One of the most important things I take into account when buying a car is whether the manufacturer goes racing. If they go racing they're more likely to be an engineering led company, as opposed to one run by accountants. Therefore they're more likely to make interesting cars for me to drive. I want that kind of car rather than one that's more akin to white goods like fridges or washing machines. I'm looking at you Toyota.
