Another idea for newcomers to moto-camping. Just try it! Load up what you think you need and go camping 10 miles from home. That way you can realize what else you need / forgot and not be too far from home to get it. Trial and error without being a hundred miles from home. I always make it to the end.......😀

Rain clouds move very fast. Good advice. I always tell people that there is no perfect way to camp off the bike. It will evolve. I always assess my gear and needs at the end of each summer and then look for fall sales to improve and augment my gear. The big thing is, as you put it, just get out and do the thing.

“Rain clouds move fast.” On average around 35 mph. I studied aviation meteorology in college and view the radar activity regularly on my phone app. Less than I should if I’m riding all day on the road then at gas stops and lunch.

I installed an alarm system with a microwave sensor that warns people if they come within a couple feet of my bike. It also pages me if the alarm is activated. I did this because of my concerns of being in grocery stores while traveling with gear. When I was younger I looked out the window while at the grocery check out and a guy was on my enduro trying to kick start it. I had turned off the fuel so he couldn't keep it running. By the time I got outside he was wheeling it away while running. When I yelled he dropped it and jumped in a friends car waiting for him. It's an evil world so you have to plan and prepare on being robbed. Also, always have your tents rain fly ready because rain clouds move fast. 😉

Hi Amanda, my wife and I carry bear spray as a less leathal method of protection... Also we use canned air Duster the ones for cleaning keyboards. Just the spray sound usually scares critters away. But have been stalked by a mountain lion in the Sierras. Bob cats haven't been a threat.

Last year. I lost the sleeping bag. And a ground cloth. For underneath my tent. Which was wrapped over the sleeping bag. But that is the only thing that I have lost. And when I got to my destination. I had to go to Walmart and buy another sleeping bag. Luckily. I don't have a ton of money. Tide up into my gear. The most expensive part of my gear. Is a little buddy camping heater. Because one year I had ice on my tent. When I woke up, the more in the morning.

Rain clouds move fast. I carry a 3 ft cable with loops on each end. I can run it through the sleeve of my jacket and my helmet to secure it to the bike via a padlock. That way I can feel mostly secure my stuff is safe. My rear box is a pelican case I padlock and like Amanda said, soft luggage isn’t easy and quick to get into. Great video.

Setting the bike up for a quick exit is a great tip! I’ve never thought of that, up North of the border we have bears basically everywhere, you have to be bear aware even at larger provincial campgrounds (not as careful as wild camping, but careful none the less) ... also I noticed the cows in your video, free range cattle is common in many of the areas I ride, and they can make noises that sound just like bears, I swear it’s just like a bear 😂 .... but that’s a whole other story lol .... and yes, rain clouds always move fast

OK, I expect to take some grief for this, but my primary fear is wildlife, by which I mean cougars, rattlesnakes, and other critters that may not appreciate my presence or appreciate it too much, as in, they see me as breakfast. OK, I said it.

As someone planning to live off my motorcycle for some time I can say that theft is a worry. There is only so much that can be done and I certainly agree that if you make it more difficult to get off the bike the less it'll be messed with. Right now I travel with the mosko rackless 80L and I can say that it is not enough for what I do on the bike, then again I don't have the best packing setup. However, if I were to do just a simple weekend trip or maybe even another two week trip, I would not need that much. Because I'm very digital I carry alot of electronics which adds a lot of weight and takes up alot of space. So don't do that if you can avoid it lol. On my last trip showers were no problem. I only had one campsite that didn't have showers. Though I did spend money for each site, so I can't attest to free campsites. I carry wet wipes as a backup for lack of shower.
