Go North East Quaycity Voltra Launch Event

On September 1st Go North East took over the Quayside and flipped the switch on nine fully electric buses for their Quaycity Q3 service. The service runs from Great Park to Wallsend via Newcastle City centre up to every 15 minutes. The event featured 8 of the 9 new Voltra buses which were all lined up along the Quayside to show off this amazing investment. The idea behind this was to recreate the last Q3 launch event which was held in August 2010.
This is building on another nine fully electric buses which entered service in November 2020 on their 53 & 54 service which runs from Saltwell Park to Newcastle via Gateshead every 12 minutes. The buses are the result of a £2 million investment with top-up funding from the Government’s Ultra-Low Emission Bus Fund. This is part of a wider investment to help improve air quality and meet Newcastle’s clean air zone which comes into place in January 2023. On top of this, Go-Ahead is committed to a ‘net zero’ bus fleet by 2035 with the 18 Voltra buses being the start of this for Go North East.
The brand ‘Voltra’ was designed to look futuristic and show off its technology and highlight the importance of the Zero emissions. These Yutong E12 buses have a range of onboard features to deliver a bus of the future experience, including air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, wireless and USB charging phone holders, and a ‘tap-on tap-off’ contactless feature. It's clear that these are not your average bus and is just one way of encouraging more people to make the switch to a cleaner and greener journey.
