Great work by firefighter. He was masked up so it made sense for the DPOP to handle the single radio transmission for their 6-block response. DPOP shouldn’t need to ask which discharge handle corresponds to a given cross-lay (as I firefighter, this question would’ve given me pause to how much trust I have in the DPOP). Chief instructions to wait because of fuels was ridiculous. Water on fire cool fire and prevents more fire. This fireman obviously knows his job. Good video.

As a veteran firefighter for 37 years, and a company leader, I see several things wrong. First as already stated, he was told by what appeared to be a Chief not to go in due to the dangers of the acetylene tanks which not only puts him, but also his crew in danger. Second, it looks as though he is in a Tanker/Engine, which should have at least 2500 gallons aboard, so in these types of fires, big fire equals big lines so why pull a 1 3/4 handline. These are just my observations; they may have different protocols.
@Jason-7212
@Jason-7212 4 ай бұрын
Yea. I was with a small volunteer department and for a while our first out/best unit was a pumper/tanker. On a fire like this our standard approach would have been at least TWO (2) 1 1/2 (1 3/4 with 1 1/2 fittings) handlines attacking the fire from OUTSIDE the building, until we knew there was little danger or explosions. Once those pressurized bottles were located and cooled THEN we would make entry, maybe. This fire quite probably could have been extinguished with an exterior attack alone.
@zackp__13

It’s best to not comment if you don’t know what you are talking about. This was actually just a very small fire, just a culvert pipe they were cutting and it had tar inside of it that caught.

@@zackp__13 Small fire, large fire does not matter. You treat them all the same. Disobeying the orders of a command officers is still NOT TO BE PREMITTED, EVER! This guy was reckless. Even if this was a small fire you still take DUE CAUTION for all of the explosion hazard present and approach it like it is ready to explode because you just don't fully know what us going on inside of that fire. Pull you lines, get some cooling going on, the enter CAUTIOUSLY. This is an industrial site and you don't know what all is in there that can go BOOM! Better to let a little more material get blackened than have to go to a fire fighters funeral.

@@Jason-7212 that’s one of the foolish comments I’ve ever read, no fire is ever handled the same as another. Yes you may use some of the same tactics and etc. but it’s never the same just to many variables. However you are correct about disobeying an officer. But if you watch the video I wouldn’t say he completely disobeyed him. He went in maybe 5 to 8 ft. And cooled it as he was told and then proceeded in.

@@zackp__13 Disobeying an order from command on a safety issue like this by a foot or 10 foot is the same. AND You still DO NOT ENTER a potential explosive environment AT ALL until you have minimized the risk of explosions. Your argument does not hold water. Small fire, large fire. the basic tactics are the same. Cool possible explosion hazards, protect other exposures, contain fire, then extinguish. Enter into a burning structure don't happen until you have two (2) lines on the ground, and four (4) fire fighters available. MINIMUM! No entry is made until there is a safety line ready! Decent. Officer and engineer don’t know the pre connect layout? Fast water is correct, but in my opinion, a little too risky knowing the materials in the building. Didn’t hear about a water supply (2nd due?) so they’re 2500 gallons (I think it was a tanker/engine) might give them a false sense of security. But! they got results.

Nice response and fast attack. BUT! He made entry for extinguishment AFTER being expressly being told NOT TO due to the presence of Acetylene bottles. He disobeyed an order from command. That is a MAJOR violation. It is a MAJOR safety issue also. He GOT LUCKY. This fire fighter should be severely disciplined for this. It is hot headed, unthinking, ego driven mistakes like this that get people injured and killed. It's great to be the best. It's great when volunteer departments outperform the paid departments. They just can't do it by making mistakes that will eventually cost people their lives. The only way to prevent that is to step down HARD on people when they do break the rules. When they do violate the safety rules.

Command said “stay out of here until you cool it down” he did his job he put water on it and cooled it down. He was being aggressive and saved the building. Your comment makes you sound like the guy who does the bare minimum on a fire and post on Facebook later about being a fireman. We (obviously not you and then some) signed up for this job to protect LIFE and PROPERTY. Safety is ruining the fire service. We do this job FOR THEM and not ourselves. We are all just a number but when you leave a department just know that NOBODY remembers a safe fireman. Be aggressive, change the culture, and lord have mercy vent then damn roof.

@@C-money-11 There is a difference between 'Being aggressive' and 'Being Stupid'. What is Rule#1 you are taught at fire school? Don't become a casualty. Rule# 2, Obey Command. His officers ORDERED him to stay out. I have found multiple fires with propane, butane, acetylene, oxygen,, and LPG bottles involved. In EVERYONE the first rule is ALWAYS cool before approach. Yes, there are times that you have to for rescue purposes, but NO building is worth the life of a fire fighter. You can be aggressive in the attack WITHOUT entry or approaching too close to a pressurized cylinder with flame impingement. It's called fighting SMARTER. Racing in to "Put Wet Stuff on the Red Stuff' is a recipe to get people hurt. Times change. Hazards have changed. Tactics have changed.
