5:00 chalk bags are fairly life supporting in my experience, at least from a mental standpoint. If I lose my rope, it's a free solo. But if I lose my chalkbag, I lose my mind.

oh my god. There has been so much truly sketch alternatives out on the web for lead rope solo. This is truly a blessing. I was taught LRS using a guide plate as part of a self/partner rescue course. with the caveat... Do not use for fun.

Tandem top roof soloing is probably the most fun climbing I’ve done, because you both get the climb close to the same route and take different ways to get there then at night is fun too.

I am very curious what y'all think about the petzl zigzag. It is certainly bigger than a grigri, but it is fundamentally designed for top rope soloing in trees, so it feels in my mind like it should be equally user friendly on a cliff. Actually, the Akimbo, from rock exotica would probably be the most compact, though the zigzag offers a different way of using it that make for easier rope retrieval options. There is also the RE unicender and the Notch Rope Runner Pro.

@maxscott3349 6 ай бұрын
The zigzag is an arborist tool, it's not designed to be shock loaded or used on dynamic rope
@matiascamprubi-soms7719
@matiascamprubi-soms7719 6 ай бұрын
@@maxscott3349 it is absolutely designed for short falls on static rope. I have two, and have taken some decent falls on them in trees. They are beefy and slip at about 1/3 of their 25kn MBS. Several folks have broken ones that had been in full duty service for 5 years, and they break close to MBS. I wanna see some drop testing and see where it fails, but TRS with 11.5mm static rope seems super doable to me. It is specifically designed for self belay. And what about the ultra compact Akimbo?

I tried Siebe's system and I don't think it is bad. It is easy to set up (way easier than yours) and feeds really well in a regular basic USD direction. I can climb one grade below my personal limit with it, which isn't bad. For sure, if you want to push grades, yours is the best by far but if you want to go and have fun occasionally, I think Siebe's system is really good.

Looking forward to the video's! Apart for fun, as an instructor I use TRS to climb along with my students. For instance on multipitch or trad courses. I get the Neox isn't good for LRS, but is it for TRS? I use a Taz Lov/trax combo myself and am quite happy with it, but the Neox would be more versatile and cheaper.

amazing video, can't wait for the in-depth next one... which id bet right now, its gonna be in the top3 views LRS video on youtube. i only dabbed in it, leadroped 3 routes (and toproped zero because basically no crag here can be accessed from the top) with the "calligaris method"... biggest danger i perceived was rope damage since after a fall it would keep rubbing the same spot on rocks until it gets unweighted... so keeping eye on that aspect was more concerning than the actual self belay system, which catched me on every test fall

Adding rope to the anchor to reduce fall factor - there are a number of systems one can think of.. to leave more rope "at" the anchor - with or without mechanical advantage (or throw in a bungee / shock absorber.. - seems that is the thing to do ~discussion 14 mins - logical...) Ha ha - your friend can be a TRS setup to prove the LRS techniques - an additional friend outside of your grigris and "neoxes" - jk - can call the EMT in the event both solo systems fail... (carry a PLB in case the friend can't be there "actually"...)

I think one bullet point would be that it is “currently” the only lead rope specific, non modified belay device and/or system that you can buy from a distributor/commerce. I figured that a device from the ground up that was engineered for lead soloing would be more present in these conversations. It just seems odd to me that an upside down Grigri (sometimes modified) is more common place. Or a device that you can’t get your hands on any gets more mention. I personally use the “el Mudo 3.0” and love it just wish it was in the conversation more often so we can all advance our knowledge with observations of other systems and over all knowledge of lead soloing. Full disclosure I don’t have any social media, so I am not aware of those discussions on FB.

I use this device. It's great and probably the safest LRS device ever made, but I can see the benefits of sacrificing 1% of safety for a less bulky setup. If I could climb 5.14 like Brent I probably wouldn't want to do it wearing a full strength chest harness with a large block of steel hanging from it. If I aid climbed I'd choose the El Mudo every time.

17:35 I've never done any rope soloing but I think the obvious answer for how to "test" your setup would be to test it with a friend who is also belaying you from a second rope....... it kinda negates ths SNAFU effect as if you have messed up something in the system you plan on using you've got an actual human their to catch you...... or call 999/911 when when the 💩 really hits the wall.... and so do you 😁😅

My current system is a grigri backed up with an ASAP. Could you please comment on a grigri backed up with an ASAP vs grigri with knots with regard to safety and ease of redpoint? I know there is concern with the desheathing if using an ASAP as a primary belay device but I'm wondering how it does as a backup (if the primary grigri fails). Thanks!

This video already went on too long, but to answer your question: Any surprises with normally jam resistant knots jamming? Rope solo puts them under higher forces and will smaller cord I have had the normally-easy-to-untie alpine butterfly jam horribly. Does he use an EBSB to avoid jamming? Answer: I can untie bowlines and butterflies no matter how hard I've pulled them. Slip knots, if bounced on enough, are very difficult to one handed undo via just the tail. Also I think I remember him using back up clove hitches or slip knot, is that trading safety vs speed in an interesting way? Answer: I think it makes more sense in the videos we shot but hard to say here concisely. Finally for your channel specially. What strange cross loadings, funky behaviour, or even full failure has he seen taking gear out of its normal use case? Answer: people think steel carabiners are better for cross load risk. I think/thought that too so I use them in the drop tower and have broken so many steel biners from cross loading. Don't cross load things you may whip on is my advice.
