GO Transit Commuter Trains

GO Transit is the main public transportation agency for the greater Toronto area. Since operations began in 1967, it has become one of the largest and busiest transportation agencies in North America, operating 39 bus routes and 8 commuter rail lines. It is now operated as a division of Metrolinx, a Province of Ontario Crown Corporation that oversees various forms of transit in and around the city of Toronto. In this video, we will look at contemporary GO Commuter rail operations on several different lines. We will visit many different locations on the Kitchener, Milton, Barrie, Lakeshore East, and Lakeshore west lines.

It's an impressive sight. I think the longest one I saw was about 10 cars.

They can pull a maximum of 12 cars, which even to me is interesting

These units are MP40s with a 4000HP rating. Since they have a separate auxiliary motor for HEP, the main engine doesn't have to produce power to provide power to the passenger cars. So a 4000HP locomotive can pull a 12 car train easily. The trick, however, is getting it up to track speed from a stop. It will be slow to accelerate. Take a Look at how many cars Amtrak AutoTrain P40/ 42s pull with just two units. They don't accelerate fast, but once they get up there, 70mph is not out of the question.

GO Transit has always fascinated me. Especially as they were back then, with those Old Cab Cars which used to have some really impressive K5LA horns. And now, they're starting to have a resurgence, with the Hawker Siddeley Cab Cars (200-214) being reactivated again, and are already slowly starting to go into service right now. Also look at that unique "Two-Tone Old Scheme" Coach at 12:56. Those things are a very rare but super unique sight.

Honestly the TRE train in Dallas is not planning to get those types of cars cause they were fully rebuilt and have more powerful air tanks for both the bells, the brakes, and the horns too

Its interesting how one GO train consist can have multiple different series of Bi-levels, ranging from Series 1 cars built in the 70s, to Series 10 cars built in the 2010s.

Interesting side note: there was a Canadian Soap Opera called "Train 48", that took place entirely on GoTrains. It followed the fictional romance and drama of daily commuters intermingling on the train.

Commuter here! Find me on the lakeshore west on my way to work ✌️there are a few pedestrian walkways above the tracks along lakeshore west, if you find yourself up there as a train passes underneath, you might get to hear the conductor honk for you 😅

Started out as single decker trains evolved to Double decker trains but we still need a dining car (Passengers who missed breakfast due to early rush hour) Rather than referring to the lines by name I refer to them by the color shown on the map Lakeshore East=Scarlet Line Lakeshore West=Mahogany Line Kitchener=Viridaian Line Richmond Hill=Cyan Line Milton=Amber Line Barrie=Indigo Line Stouffville=Tawny Line

Dining cars aren't a thing on regional rail trains due to that taking up valuable space. This is more of a feature on Intercity, long distance and high speed trains.
