In this video, my kids and I explore the six essential steps for goal setting through fun, interactive games and activities designed just for kids. From fishing for clear goals to playing "The Floor Is Lava," we’ll bring these important concepts to life in a way that's both educational and entertaining. Whether it's fitness for kids, building better habits, or developing teamwork, this video makes learning practical skills enjoyable and easy to understand!
🎣 Step 1: Setting Clear Goals
We start by helping kids understand the difference between clear and unclear goals using a fishing game! With two buckets of water-one clean and one muddy-we fish for paper "goals." Clear, specific, and realistic goals are in the clean bucket, while vague and unrealistic goals are in the muddy one. By catching and comparing these colorful "goal fish," your kids will learn how to make their dreams achievable and actionable.
🏞 Step 2: Breaking the Goal Down
Big goals can seem overwhelming, so we break them into smaller, manageable steps using the analogy of climbing a ladder. My kids and I show how running a mile can be achieved by starting with small steps-like taking walks, running for short bursts, and gradually increasing the distance, and decreasing the rest. This fun demonstration shows that every small step counts when working toward a big goal!
🖼 Step 3: See Your Goals
To stay focused, it’s important to keep our goals visible. We demonstrate how to create vision boards, sticker charts, and calendars to keep our goals front and center. By making these tools creative and colorful, your kids will stay motivated and excited about their progress. Seeing their goals every day will help them stay on track and avoid forgetting what they’re working toward.
💃 Step 4: Make It Fun
Goals don’t have to feel like work-they can be fun! My kids and I demonstrate this by turning a daily task like emptying the dishwasher into a family activity with a celebratory dance party at the end. Adding a little fun to routines can make even the simplest goals more enjoyable and achievable for kids.
🔥 Step 5: Overcoming Obstacles
Obstacles are part of the journey, and my kids and I tackle this concept with a "Floor Is Lava" obstacle course! By jumping from block to block, we discuss how challenges are normal and how family and friends can support us when things get tough. This activity encourages perseverance and shows kids that obstacles are just stepping stones to success.
⚾ Step 6: Following Through
Using the game of T-ball, we demonstrate how important it is to follow through on goals. Just like in baseball, where a full swing sends the ball flying, following through on goals can lead to amazing results. We also talk about adjusting goals to fit different needs, like lowering the T for younger kids. This step emphasizes that persistence and adaptation are key to achieving success.
