Johnny Giles doesn’t like to admit that Jack was right and he was wrong. Jack knew the game and knew international football and management. Jack made the Republic of Ireland a world top ten team for a few years. Incredible

Doesn't matter where he came from, lived, grew up, went to school etc. He speaks from the heart. Jack Charlton was as honest as the day is long. It was a question of the right manager, at the right time, with the right group of players in the right country. The big picture is that Big Jack raised the fortunes and spirits of a whole COUNTRY. (Remember the Celtic Tiger ?!). That, in itself, is waaay, more important than the style of the football. Anyone who does not understand that does not understand the impact football can have on society, and a country, as a whole. Big picture people !!

Jack Charlton is bigger than any football coaches in this Island, he was the most entertaining personality in this Island. I was at speak easy bar at QUB watching ireland lost in Lisbon, then again lost to Holland in playoff in 1995. From HK. RIP Jackie.

Andy was an excellent player himself. The pressing game was disruptive to international teams but failed badly in tournaments because it couldn't be sustained especially in the heat.

@@andrewoliver8930 ok that's a fair point. In all fairness Lawrenson was a far more high profile player than Townsend, so why didn't he play for England? Maybe the selectors thought he wasn't good enough for England even though he was 1 of Liverpools top players. The margins are very fine.

Andy must remember it like it was yesterday Ireland played very much like english 1st division sides did back then. It was what english top flight teams were famous for. Only really liverpool back then played a game where they played football like continental sides The rest of the top flight in england played like ireland did under jack charlton Jack charlton in effect made the irish team into an english 1st division side, who competed. On there day they could play anyone. Great years.
