GOAT Magic: Old School-BantamGeddon vs. Underworld Dreams

Right now, the Magic world's focus is on the game's history thanks to Dominaria, which is overloaded with sweet reprints and callbacks. In celebration, for this episode of GOAT Magic, we're exploring one of the most historic formats in all of Magic: Old School! If you aren't familiar with Old School, it's a strange format that only allows cards from the first couple years of Magic (from Alpha through Fallen Empires), which helps the format capture the flavor of playing Magic back during its infancy in 1993 / 1994. While the card pool is small, it's also powerful, with all of the Power 9 being legal along with degenerate combos and powerful spells!
For our match today, Richard is running BantamGeddon, which is looking to play a bunch of aggressive creatures and fast mana, wrath away all of the lands on the battlefield with Armageddon, and then finish things off with Erhnam Djinn or Serra Angel. Meanwhile, I'm trying to combo off with Underworld Dreams Combo by Forking Wheel of Fortunes before eventually winning the game with a combination of Black Vise and Underworld Dreams. I sincerely hope you guys stick with Old School and keep playing enough to learn the format. It's great fun and far more balanced than everybody thinks. Everybody ASSUMES you can just put P9 in a deck and win... and that's NOT the case. Some of the best decks have no power and budget decks ARE competitive. I even made a series of 5 budget mono color Old School decks on my KZbin channel that can and do routinely take down fully powered tier 1 decks. So the meta is not all about money, there's a very real balance. About that balance, every main deck type has strong representation. Aggro creature, combo, control, tempo-control, lockdown, control combo, you name it. They are all there and they are ALL capable of winning tournaments in Old School. Not many formats can be won with a budget deck or any one of 50 decks taking the top slot. About Old School game balance, you guys asked about it at 29:01 well... Seth's reaction to his opening hand leads me to believe he has never played with the power nine because a great opening hand is more like land, 2 mox, black lotus, the rack, and balance. Opponent begins game with 2 cards in hand! And great if you have another rack or black vice and can get down to zero!

I loved this video and this is certainly a very interesting and entertaining format. Really hope that y'all revisit it again some time. Not a fan of Seth throwing game four, I understand that magic is a game and we play to have fun, especially between friends like this, but just play more games. Throwing a game seems like poor sportsmanship, especially when your opponent is gonna presumably see it happen when the video uploads. Other than that, super entertaining format to watch

I played in that tourment the two cheapest decks are white wennie and mono black . I went 3-3 i was turn one dark rital into hypnotic spector all day . I also went turn 2 dark ritaul sinkhole your land then hymn to tourach you . It was great.

At 34:12, you were supposed to strip mine his land, move to second main when he floats mana, then play out underworld dreams and wheel of fortune. He couldn't have disenchanted you and you would've won that turn.

I once used my semi competitive Faeries vs an oldschool Underworld dream Deck. The match was really quickly over but close as hell. I was on turn 5 and if I had m Chrome Mox in there and drew it I would've won. But Chrome mox isn't modern so it's not in my fearie deck anymore XD it was 5 days earier because I never got the notice of the Chrome Mox ban :D The Video reminded me about that strange experience :D

If you decide to do this again I'd love to see mono-black (Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter, Hymn to Tourach,...). It's the deck that gives me the best Shandalaar starts. Also don't laugh at Jade Statue it survives all boardwipes.

You only get to stack the Howling Mine and Sylvan Library effects if you control both triggers. Since Richard only controls Sylvan his resolves second because you resolve nonactive player triggers first

You can't stack them the way you want because the active player's abilities go on the stack first. Since Richard controls Sylvan there is no choice it gets added to the stack first.

I know this is just some casual games with a friend, so you don't need to play optimally. Just a question. Can't you play dark ritual before wheels that draw exactly 7 cards just to have extra mana? Eg. around 32:00? Feel like these games weren't close to optimal and the creature decks don't seem as strong as the creatureless lol. Serra angel next to black lotus.

If they banned Llanowar elves I cannot imagine the shit storm they'd have on why the elves deserve a banning in a format most people are already leaving due to stale environments. I don’t play 93/94, but this way painful to watch. A lot of the time Seth did something that seemed wrong. E.g. 32:27 Seth didn’t ritual before casting time twister. If he did that, he would have been able to cast underworld of dreams at 32:47 and still have enough mana for howling mine. I also noticed that Seth wheels quite readily (e.g. doesn’t wait a turn to cast his second underworld of dreams before wheeling). That doesn’t seem right to me.
