Jimi Hendrix career spanned only four years but he is considered one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music. He headlined the famous Woodstock Festival in 1969. He had a lot of great songs such as "Hey Joe", "Purple Haze", "The Wind Cries Mary", "All Along The Watchtower" etc.

I know he wasn't credited but prior to his first album he was a background guitarist he was a session musician before he became his own act and that goes back to the earlier mid-sixties that he played on many different jazz and Rock recording he just did not get exposed to the public until 1967.(but he did some great work for different musicians in 64 65 and 66)

@@TheHaplorhine not really a "vet" either. He didn't even finish training. Got kicked out for all sorts of things, like missing bed check, sleeping at his post, unable to follow directions, requiring supervision at all times, his eyesight was so poor, he ranked dead last in marksmanship in his outfit, and finally, he was caught jacking it in the latrine while he was supposed to be on duty. The smoking gun has scans of his army papers, and you can read them. He couldn't tell the press he got kicked out for that, so he made up the story about breaking his ankle.

On the crowd reaction. When Jimi's first record appeared we were listening to it in a group, totally stoned and totally into it. The concert crowd reflects this. This was not considered dance music, but acid music. The idea was to let it take you away.

You got to understand back then he wasn't spread all over tv. As a matter of fact television signed off at midnight so there was only snow on TV until I or 6 in the morning. There was no such thing as MTV or a music video. How you heard new artist was on the radio or later when you bought their record. The audience is STUNNED. He invented this style of music 🎵🎶. It had never been done before. The cords and licks he did were his own and were revolutionary. His sex appeal on stage is incredible! This was uncommon back then. The audience had to know they were seeing a legend and were just blown away. Oh yeah, we stayed pretty much stoned most of the time too. He was utterly incredible!

Exactly. Both responses are totally valid and both responses show an appreciation for what you're hearing.

Those were the days...these people were way too high and Jimi knew he was the controller! They were tripping in space and seeing sound coming out of those amplifiers and the Band was moving in all directions and the ground was quacking in slow motion and the hills and valleys were moving up and down while they were on Acid! They couldn't move. And the music and Jimi's playing was a shock to the system! But that was the kind of crowd normally would say that's the best concert they went to ever!!! Sometimes people went to these concerts to critique. "Oh let's see if this band can really play like that..."they ended up getting too stoned, frozen and shocked to the core!" I'm 66yrs old 67 next month April, a Rock and Metal musician and this kind of stoned...people these days don't go near it! I was 13 yrs old on this kind of high back then enjoying the trip and still did dance!!! This was a new sound, crazy and Groovy!

Now you know how we felt 50 years ago. This way of playing guitar is part of the vocabulary of the guitar. Before Hendrix, nobody did this. Believe it or not, the gyrating was just him having fun. It was for show, and it was NOTHING compared to his full abilities on the instrument. It may interest you to know that at this particular performance, he was loaded to the gills on a powerful psychedelic drug that would have laid low a lesser man. And he STILL delivered this greatness! FYI, the stock footage of people looking bored is just that; stock footage. The video of Hendrix playing was incomplete, and they had to fill it in somehow.

You have to watch - live at Maui , live at Woodstock , live at Monterey pop festival , Isle of wight , listen to live at the Filmore East. One of things that Hendrix had was long fingers. That gave him great advantage on vibrato , outstanding double stops & triple , hammer on & off , wrap his whole hand around the neck to reach many strings at once and so much more . In an interview , Hendrix said that he likes the crowd to dig the music and not go crazy. Hendrix was in his zone while playing.

I first heard Jimi when I was 14 and that brought me around to listening loads of jazz and blues and hundreds of people. Making movies was very expensive in those days and most Pop Festivals were done as cheaply as possible, the audience shots were probably not even from his performance, which is why the reaction shots don't do it justice. You noticed how much footage of this song was missing and they filled the blank spots with pictures from other shows, because they didn't even have the complete song on film. This is the very reason there isn't that many of his shows on film or video tape. Video and Film were very expensive to make them the right way at this time.

Jimi could make the guitar sing. Fun fact:He was close friends with Eric Clapton. I'm gonna throw a few names at ya here. Eric of course, Carlos Santana, and Kansas. All worth checking out. I think you'd enjoy them. 😉

Yes often people were high during that whole era. Just sayin. Smokin that is. FIRE by Jimi Hendrix is much faster and my favorite for hard driving fast beat. I could tell stories of how kids changed in high school from one year (dancing & alcohol) to the next year (everyone smokin) it changed the whole energy of a "dance". That was the attraction of the ELECTRIC GUITAR...it was a TRIP....get it? An EXPERIENCE LIKE HIS NAME. THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE.

If you don't know just how great Jimi is in the world of Rock, and Blues, then you've either been born in the last 20 years, or you don't know Rock music history. Jimi plays his guitar upside down, because you see, when he was a 9-year-old kid growing up in the poor part of Seattle, Jini's dad got him a cheap, Bargain Basement guitar at Sears. The only problem is Jimi is a Lefty, and almost all guitars are made for right-handed people. That didn't stop young Jimi. He simply flipped the guitar upside down, and then taught himself how to play all of the chords backwards. Nothing was going to stop this kid. He changed Rock music forever, as nobody had ever seen anyone play a guitar and make it do the things he did. -There have many movies and tv documentaries on his life. He is simply the greatest.

Lots of bs here. The guitar al bought jimi was from a neighbor, and he did flip the strings too, so he was not playing the chords "backwards". Also just about every lefty had to do that, it wasn't anything unique to jimi.
