In the GOAT discussion, it is important to take into consideration relevant facts that both Roger & Rafa have had FOURTEEN significant advantages to help them over Novak in their tennis careers. The so called “objective” experts, analysts, commentators and media generally fail to mention this. Both Roger & Rafa grew up in privileged environments in Switzerland and Spain with proper facilities to learn and train. Novak grew in a poor war torn country with almost no facilities to learn or train. In fact his parents had to schedule his training to avoid constant bombing raids. Both Roger & Rafa had easy soft childhoods with little or no pressure place on them in their affluent environments. Novak grew up poor and his parents invested all they had for his career. Novak knew at an early age tennis for him was a duty, not simply a privilege or for fun. He fully understood before he was a teenager the massive weight place on his shoulders of his whole family depending on him to succeed in his pro career Both Roger & Rafa started their careers 5 & 2 years before Novak, which gave both of them a big head start in the race for GOAT. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the billion dollar industry of the big sponsors pushing the narrative of them being the best. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the TV commentators to continue to push the narrative of them being the best. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the media to promote them as the most popular and best ever. Novak was generally ignored or dismissed. Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the Internet analysts to promote them. Novak was generally shunned most of his career Both Roger & Rafa had the backing of the court-side fans. During his entire career, anytime Novak played against Roger or Rafa, 90-98% of the crowds favored them over Novak. In fact, the hostile crowds many times constantly tried to harass, taunt, and disrupt Novak during course of his matches against both Roger & Rafa. It is absolutely astonishing when you consider the fact that Novak has reached the pinnacle as the GOAT in tennis inspite of the significant

I'm gonna leave this here to make it more visible. I hope you don't mind. I appreciate the effort put into this video a lot, but I'll just say it: the conclusions are wrong, because the researcher is misunderstanding the information the analysis is giving him. He didn't prove that Djokovic's era is stronger, he proved that the difference in level between the best players and the not so best is bigger in Djokovic's era than in Federer's era. That doesn't mean the best players from the Djokovic era are better than the best from the Federer era. I could argue that they are at the same level, but the best players from the Djokovic era have better numbers because they all faced a weaker competition (the not so best in the Djokovic era being weaker than the not so best in the Federer era). To make it easy to understand. Let's say we have a player that in a given era wins 10 GS, and then we have 10 players that win 1 GS each, on a different era. I could argue that the other 10 are better than the first one, even though they only have 1 GS each, because I could say that this happened only because they had to face each other in the same era (and there wasn't enough titles for everyone). Conclusion: you can't measure the tennis level by comparing achievements, this only gives you information about the difference in level between a certain amount of players from the same era, but does not inform you if they were all better or worst than players from another era. This can only be analyze subjectively, by watching tennis and trying to figure out which players were stronger.

An important stats, which boggles my mind: Before Fed started dominating in 2004, there were EIGHT different champions in the last EIGHT grand slams (2002-2003).
@jjsyphor82882 жыл бұрын
Because there was no clear standout at the time and tho there were 8 diff champs, they were still elites and not randoms. What's a more interesting fact is how Nadal and Djokovic are dominating in the "Next Gen" era with no resistance. 2016-2018 when Nadal and Djokovic turned 30 and were slowing down, nobody ever took the reigns from them. 2016 to now is the next gen era, a lot of top players now weren't around in the 2011-2016 era. Yet none of these next gens can take the reigns from 2 out of prime legends. doesn't that show you how weak the 2016-2022 era is? Even roger won three times post 2016 and he was much older. If Roger played the players from 2016-2022 when he turned 30 years old, he'd have won even more titles. When Roger left his prime he had to challenge Prime Stan, Prime Nadal, Prime Novak, Prime Andy. All who could have won slams in any era. When Nadal and Novak left their prime, they had much easier competition.

Nole took the game to a whole different level in all possible angles (results, performance, versatility, defense, offense) becoming almost invincible in a time we did not expect someone to top Federer and be a consistent champion, and not a seasonal champion like other players who shine in 1 tournament every 3 years. On top of that, there is Nadal. I think a long time will pass until we have the best 3 tennis players in the history of the sport playing in the same era. Players like Rod Laver, Björn Borg, Pete Sampres and others for tennis fans who have been watching longer than the last 20 years are also eligible for the goat, if there is one. then I like your video too greetings from Switzerland PS: i tried to watch the video but it is so horrible. may I ask since when have you been watching tennis? because your knowledge of tennis is disastrous!

Really good analysis! While I do agree that 2004-2007 was Federer’s peak era, I’d be curious to re-run your number if you drop 2007 and include 2017. That would bring a lot of the players that peaked closed to some of Djokovic’s prime years.

It is a very good analysis, but what you have to consider is that 2004-2007 was played in much faster surfaces, and there were huge differences between tournament court speeds, Wimbledon - French Open - Australian - ATP Finals - Miami etc.... From 2011 onwards, the courts were practically identical, and that helped the rest of the good players, the top 10, top 15 contenders to be more consistent and have better overall results. Court speeds (especially hard court speeds) slowed down significantly in the 2010 - 2020 decade, which helped Djokovic's game (longer rallies) and hurt Federer's game (finish the point quickly and precisely).

Im a fed fan - but Djokovic is goat - no two ways about it. And for those saying Djokovic is winning in a weak era: - a.) this supposed weak era is way more competitive than the 2004-2007 era when Federer racked up 11 slams against Hewitt/Roddick/Gonzalez/Baghdatis and even then struggled against a less mature Nadal B.) this isnt a weak era - Djokovic beating players that should be in their prime - Thiem/ Medvedev/ Tsitsipas (all superior games to Roddick who was nothing without the serve and hewitt etc that had a rally ball landing in the middle of the court lol) C.) The fed being old doesnt hold up - Djokovic in 2009 beat Federer 3 times in one of federers supposedly best seasons lol D.) Fed may be old - but djokovic and Nadal are same age and djokovic consistently dominates Nadal on any other surface besides clay - (Nadal also dominated Federer on every surface in his prime - 2008 FO final, 2008 Wimbledon Final, 2009 Australian Open Final) E.) Western media also biased so heavily favours Federer especially @ elitist tournaments like Wimbledon (where he will most likely equal or break Federers 8 Wimbledon titles)

Great video and Novak is definitely the goat with stats or not, I mean just look at his achievements!!! I think the reason why most people think the era is weak now is mainly due to how a post-prime federer was able to win against many of the next gen players and grabbed 3 slams during djokovic’s absences. I mean if djokovic is not here federer would still be winning slams before his surgery (2019 Wimbledon as an example). So if a post-prime federer can cause so much trouble in the modern era, people naturally assume a prime federer living now will win everything.

I do think an inherent flaw in this video is that when comparing the achievements of players in different eras, you have to take into account that other players achieved less because they were losing to either Djokovic or Federer. I think evaluating the frequency to which players in each era were losing to “weaker opponents” would add better context, instead of just looking at their slam and big titles count, peak season/rating etc
@mamba24ever82 жыл бұрын
Also regarding ELO rating, I think these next gen guys could have higher ELO ratings compared to Federer generation players because the Big 3 now don’t play in as many tournaments, so lots of younger players can get wins/ranking points from the multitude of tournaments that the Big 3 sit out of. Mind you I do actually like Djokovic more than Federer and think Djoko is the GOAT - I’m just noticing some logical lapses that could’ve been addressed. All in all, great effort and analysis in these videos, keep it up
@goatkovic2 жыл бұрын
Following your logic, in the Federer era there was only Federer and Nadal on clay. In the Djokovic era there were the big 3 plus Murray and Wawrinka. Therefore, the players in the Djokovic era had more top players to contend with than those in Federer era. All of this just strengthens the argument that Djokovic era is stronger.

nice video. now it is hardly arguable that Djokovic is the GOAT in terms of stats. he was facing a bit tougher competition during his career, that is true and he made it, maybe last two seanons he benefits that Fed is too old, Nadal has injuries and getting older as well but that is how it goes. Regarding Fed I would say he is definitely one of the most gifted players of all time and his game is like a masterpiece when he is on fire so this is something special. But unlucky for him - he failed really many times with his rivals in very close matches - Nadal and Djokovic, and I would add some clashes with Del Potro and once with Marat Safin at AO05. It cost him about 5 GS titles and this is too many. He really was capable to win some of those matches, it was more about mental toughness than tennis skill and this is sad. Look at W08 -he had no trouble until final against Nadal and he failed in a close match. AO09 is the similar story, superb till the final match, USO09 - very hard to understand how he could not win it!! And later on Djokovic showed up and we know the story. Unlucky for him that matchup with Nadal was really bad for him and his style, he should react earlier with new larger frame of racquet and tactics, this was big mistake. With Djokovic it is another story, it was about his selfconfidence which he lost after 2012 and of course about age difference as well, but still he could do better, except for blowing his last Wimbledon final I remember USO 15 final and it was terrible - breakpoint conversion rate maybe cost FEd another GS title. So in general it is really a bit sad that he didnt react better and prepared some better tactics both for NAdal, which he did but late and espacially for Djokovic...

So thats the thing now?! People will now judge Djoker’s latest slams as weak slams, because he didn’t have to face Fedal in finals or semis?! Is that it?! And what if the situation in the next couple of years won’t change much and he will be able to win multiple slams a season?! People will say - “Hey! Look at all these bums and how weak they are! They cannot even defeat a 35 year old man” amirite?! Do people understand how difficult it is to keep up with someone 10 years junior your age physically, not to mention having a draw at each grand slam literally FULL of them! Wherever Djokovic will play in the next couple of years almost certainly there will be at very least 3 or 4 players out of 7, who will be 10 years younger than him! That is so easy to do, right?! But sure let’s pretend he has to face Ferrer, Cilic or Berdych in each round in the next two years…
@Summon2562 жыл бұрын
You could use “weak next gen” excuse a couple of years ago, when none of them were able to make the dent at grand slams (except for Medvedev), but now it doesn’t work anymore! Most of them are improved and dangerous now, Zverev and Medvedev are already grand slam level threats, others are catching up as well! You can’t use “weak next gen” excuse anymore every time Novak wins the grand slam without making yourself look silly!

I am a Federer fan and right of the bat I will declare that to me he is the greatest of all time along with Nadal and Djokovic. Federer’s surreal play, Nadal ‘s fight and Nole’s consistency is just mind boggling. Also, I do believe that by pure maths, Nole is the GOAT! I do have just one issue with the ELO ratings, they can be awfully low for a group of players who are very closely matched and have a fair chance of beating any other player on a given day. It doesn’t mean that they were an awful set of players, it just means that they were very closely matched in terms of skills. While on the other side, if we have a group of players in which some are higher skilled than the others, the top players will have exaggerated ELO ratings while the lower skilled players will suffer. Thus, in my opinion, ELO rating can’t be the absolute metric to compare era’s. I mean there was a lot of skill and fight in those players whom your videos dismissed like second class property even in comparison to Nishikori. I am sure tennis fans won’t be able to say for sure that in a match between Safin and Medvedev, Medvedev would absolutely trash him, no, we would still want them to play and find out. What ELO scores point out with assurity is that Federer and Djokovic were the absolute best in their eras, but isn’t enough to compare players across eras. And to be honest Federer has still won quite a lot in the Djokovic era beating so many of these supposedly strong era players. Maybe his longevity and consistency is something that maths can’t reward.

Goatkovic did a video called 'Did Federer decline after 2011?' which basically comes to the same conclusion - Federer played some of his best tennis in Djokovic era and was overall an exceptionally great champion, not following the usual path of champions who decline after around 30 years of age. Nadal and Djokovic are doing this as well! truly the 3 greatest of all time Also, although Djokovic is obviously better than Federer in their h2h, I think it's worth mentioning that their matches were usually close, with occasional dominations from Djokovic as well as Federer. It is easily one of the best rivalries ever. Before the matches it was never clearly obvious who would win. even tho Djokovic was the favourite later on he was literally one point away from losing wImbledon'19 and lost in straight sets in atp finals later that year. I'd say that's pretty good for a 37-38 year old guy
