Hmm I have the answer they think it'll be easier since some people whose fast learner thrice at learning while sleeping for a whole month or year, but don't mean every one can, only some of them like out of 100 Percent there's only 5percent of people but they are unique no hate I just study it since I learned English while listening to English words translated , while sleeping but in Korea, 98 PERCENT it won't work cause you need to learn han geul first means it's very imposible to learn Korean while sleeping so Billie is right, some people believe that it'll work but no I only just watch them awake cause I read the han geul and look at the translation ,It's better to learn them awake,but for me I now stick to listen to those video since I know some han geul but I still study in Korean learning app to help me more , That is the answer why some people believe in it 😐 😑

I'm studying medicine and I read some articles regarding this issue. First let's see when the brain learns. Conscious or unconscious, the brain will learn when you are awake, short term and long term. The brain can't learn anything when it is unconscious or sleeping. While the alpha waves may be a good explaination o ce one reaches REM stage, deep sleep, that is the point no new info can be learned, not remembed but learned. There are studies still being done to find a full conclusion. While I am studying medicine I am that, a student, so I suggest you look into this yourself as well. It's interesting, there is son much we don't know about our brain. So from what I found, no new long term learning can be done while sleeping.

I have listened to the TTMIK iyagi conversation list every night on sleep headphones for over 2 years ( and still do). Mostly I started because Jeremy & Jonson (Motivate Korean/Spongemindtv) really emphasize constant exposure to activate the grammar form & vocab recognition that I study each day. This reminded me how I learned French in HS -I watched nothing but French films and only listened to French music. My French grades were average at school but at 50 I think I am the only one that is still fluent. After the first 6 months of listening to Iyagi Korean stopped being a meaningless rapid stream of sound and began to slow down and sort into syllables. After a year those became words and I began to recognize grammar forms & vocabulary spoken in natural conversations in many voices . About 6 months ago I would be dreaming/awakening that I completely understood the meaning of the conversation I was hearing word by word but when I fully awakened the actual meaning of each word would disappear but I still understood the gist of the conversation. This was thrilling and has been exponentially increasing with recognition of entire phrases. Apparently I am experiencing the Alpha wave windows and efficiently organizing,linking & reinforcing the Korean language structure I build during the daytime learning.

" 6 months of listening to Iyagi Korean stopped being a meaningless rapid stream of sound and began to slow down and sort into syllables. After a year those became words and I began to recognize grammar forms & vocabulary spoken in natural conversations in many voices" Sir, thank you for this profound insight; I am at this stage now and it is extremely frustrating, especially since Koreans speak so fast. Billy, can you do a video on this subject and: 1. Give your personal experience on when you started to "understand" Korean 2. How long does it take to get there? And... 3. Is there anyway to speed up the listening comprehension process?
@naritruwireve1381
@naritruwireve1381 5 жыл бұрын
@@468strings7 U'm no teacher, but I'd learned that for 2: it depends on how often you study and the speed of which you pick up new information, and for 3: there is no short cut or secret to improving your Korean except for exposure and practise. If you could, travelling to Korea would be the best way to improve your Korean at a quicker speed, but if you can't, simply practise a lot and frequently by listening to others speak (subtitles on videos would be a huge help if available). Billy has some short listening tests both for beginners and intermediates on his yt channel, so you could check those out. TTMIK also has a few stories on KZbin where natives tell stories but at a slowed down speed for beginners, so those could be helpful as well. They have other listening practise videos/audio too where natives speak at a normal pace talking about things from everyday topics to reading the newspaper for more advanced learners available on soundcloud, their website, and some on youtube.

This is why I study right before bed, because the brain goes over every piece of info you learned that day and keeps the important stuff (that's why I always forget math) so if it's fresh in your memory, it's more likely to be stored in your long-term memory.

I have never thought I would actually learn Korean while I slept, however, I listen to these videos to relax me as I am going to sleep. The calming sound of a human voice, but without the distraction of getting involved in what is being said. So far, it has definitely reinforced some words and short sentences for me during the time where I am falling asleep (though not asleep). I find some of them very worthwhile.

Billy, you may have remembered the Korean script the next day because a good night’s sleep relaxed you enough to retain it. Sometimes it’s hard to learn things while you’re stressed out. And I agree with you Billy. Last time I checked people are unconscious when they’re asleep, not learning.

I used to watch a show called Red Vs Blue when I was younger, and I watched it so much that I had it playing all night as I slept. I dreamt about it as well. One morning I remember clearly waking up during that 'alpha phase' and reciting whatever the person was saying on the show, word for word. I'm not sure if its because I had learnt it in my sleep or during the day, but thats something I'll never forget! Also I tried learning korean whilst asleep and it did nothing :P

I think you can learn Korean "in your sleep", you just have to apply it throughout the day (or week), and when it is fresh in your mind and you sleep on it, it'll stick with you. For example, I would be able to learn around 18-20 Korean words a week (note: These were words that I constantly use, not occasional words or anything random) I'd just write them down in my journal and look over them throughout the day and week (with the English translation on the other side, that way I'm just looking at the Korean word and remembering what it is in English). After the week I'd know them pretty well and be able to apply them🙌So I do believe it's possible, you just have to do your part and look over the Korean words or particles you're learning throughout the day~ 😁 (Hope this made sense)

I’ve used those “learn korean whilst you sleep” and I also listen to your videos and the TTMIK grammar podcast to help me fall asleep. I really struggle to sleep so I found that if I lay with my eyes closed listening to them I’m not distracted by other things than when my eyes are open and can solely focus on what’s being said and then draw what I hear out in my brain and figure it out that way. Does that even make sense? And surprisingly enough when I wake up in the morning I remember better than if I studied those throughout the day. So I guess the “learn korean whilst you sleep” is meant for before you sleep, the settling down time. But I guess if you fall asleep quickly or are a deep sleeper these won’t work at all of you I’m afraid~

I just discovered learn while you sleep vids and found 2 channels that i like the voices and style of the presenters. I use it as my language parent, listening to them make the sounds. The best channel i found the man says the phrase, translates it, then goes over the pronunciation syllable by syllable untill the word is complete repeats that word then translate the word then moves onto the next word in the phrase, then when each word is done he again repeats the whole phrase by syllable then and only then repeats it 2 times in whole before again repeating the final time at speaking speed. Each phrase takes like 2-3 minutes depending on length. Really in depth. So helpful hearing each syllable pronounced with its Korean spelling on the screen. I find that because its for when people sleep the speaker tends to be slower and more soothing allowing me to hear it properly. In regular awake videos the instructors are too fast. So i use the sleeping videos as language parents along with my book on learning hangeul i am actually learning to read the syllables. I also have bouts of insomnia so usualy need white noise to sleep properly, so having a sleep video is my normal. Its really no worry for me to have one of these going as a way to keep hearing Korean being pronounced but also because it keeps reminding me every time i wake up that oh yeah I’m learning Korean, which is happy versus the OH COME ON let me SLEEEEEEP reaction i normally have. 😆🤭 I think these types of videos have their value and place in learning but not as a full alternative to opening a text book and actually studying.

5:13 "...Mozart music sounds nice and it's a lot better than playing Nickelback to your kids." 🤣 I've heard that the best time to learn is during the evening, when you are calm and relaxed. Then heading to sleep soon after allows your brain to better retain what you have learned. Of course, just as with everything, not everyone's mind and body work the same, so your mileage may vary.

Repeating something again and again is required whether you're learning in sleep or awake. It is the number of repeating attempt that makes you memorize. So I don't know about sleeping but if you repeat languages by listening, it'll sure improve your learning quality very soon.

Yeah, I agree with Billy. Listening to Korean before you go to sleep can't hurt with familiarity, but once you're unconscious, weel, who knows. However, I've listened to audio books in bed and fallen asleep, and when I replay them the next day to listen again (because I fell asleep) I'm surprised how much I think, " I've already heard this" as I skip through chapters. But Billy's videos are the only sensible way to learn Korean.

Well, I've never studied anything while sleeping, but for me, studying within an hour of going to sleep (or even right up until going to sleep) and first thing the next morning has always resulted in higher test scores. So, that's what I'm trying to do while learning Korean, now. That, and simply reading, writing and listening to others speak (or sing!) the language. ^_^ Guess it's a good thing I *love* reading, writing and music!

All I know is I went over some words in the morning time, didn't stick at all. Looked over more words before bed and knew them and was thinking about them when I woke up! *So yes study, but don't try to hard to memorize. And I guess that's not how everyone learns best, but it works for me. Kind of how babies learn. They don't study, they just absorb knowledge and their brain organizes it for them!* This kind of thing also happens when I'm writing songs on piano, I get complete writers block because I'm trying too hard to make a perfect song, but when I walk away for awhile and switch my focus my brain actually figures it out for me!

So best thing to do, practice speaking, listening, memorizing before sleep (stuff you may forget), then go to sleep (not listening to anything). Brain will make synapses and such to help you recall more effortlessly when you try to do so not day (like spaced repetition). But alpha wave level is right before waking so my hunch is that you could try and get learning in by listening to something DURING a nap. However naps tend to be short and most people don’t take regular daily nap times. But if you’re ever in the occasional mood, it might be a nice experiment to try out!

I tried the learning in your sleep and got nothing now in learning Spanish French and Japanese in my wake. Once I'm done with the lessons (not that I would be done learning and continuing to use the language) I will start to learn three more; like Germany, Korean, and Italian.

You almost sound like me except I don't want to learn French. Might refresh German, Italian and Japanese after Korean. They've been on the back burner for a few months or years now

So what I’m hearing is it doesn’t hurt to have the video’s on?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
It's completely useless. It only "hurts" if listening affects your ability to get a good night's sleep, which it probably would if the volume is loud enough to hear.

...please don't tell me people actually thought they would know everything in the video after waking up next morning...most people can't do that even when they're conscious. I watch those videos so I can learn stuff till I'm sleepy/falls asleep

I think the main point of the videos though is for those who genuinely study Korean and want to listen to it while going to sleep because it’s non active studying.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but in that case it would be much better to just listen to something else, such as just any regular variety show or radio program, than a lesson that couldn't be useful.
