I understand the islands have been there for a long while, and the Maori had settled them before Europeans had. What I am saying though is that the modern nation of New Zealand was made only possible by a very complex set of specific circumstances that had European settlers primarily from the British Isles as one of the most important parts of this set of circumstances. The Maori are still there and apart of the nation, but they are not responsible for the creation of the modern westernized Anglo-sphere nation of New Zealand. It is what it is today because of Europeans, and also when taking into account that the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman named it after a Dutch province it has become an extension of Europe like the United States, Canada and Australia.

@Morris Anderson There is no one aboriginal language in Australia though, we have 100s of different languages spoken by indigenous people from different groups across the nation. It would obviously be impossible to include all of them in the anthem, and picking just one wouldn't make any sense. In New Zealand there is just the one language (maori) so part of their anthem can be sung in it.

Good point. A misunderstanding over the term "power" or "authority" of a monarch soon after 1840 started a civil war that lasted about 20 years, and during WW1 there was a small "colony state" within NZ which got shut down at the loss of a couple armed police deputies. That's considered the last battle of what became the Mauri Wars or the New Zealand wars depending on how you want to put it. And oh, today, the two battle cruisers of the Royal Navy carry the names of "authority" and "fighting power". So much for it being the queens fleet no?

I do too, but I think the creativity someone has on their national elections to have a third of the MP's decided off district voting but on a national composite of "the party you personally favor". it did not work this time in 2017 but its meant to allow parties that cant elect a district representative but carry a 5 percent "party following" vote notwithstanding declarations for local politicians. It can work.

My mother is 100% from New Zealand (Whangarei). She has taught me how to speak Māori (I'm not that good at speaking it), I go to the ANZAC memorial service every year, and I am proud to have recently received my New Zealand citizenship. May God bless our country.

Salam, it basically celebrates how a great nation can be two things at once. On their last national election day the provisional MP counts showed who became the ruling party was about a quarter represented by Maori's as it was. Party leadership wanted to build on that fact that very night in fact. NZ has a double ballot system that allows people to select a third of their Parliament through personal party preference if one either likes the party behind your local MP or no. The Maori centered party on that vote barely holds a 1 percent plus following on that result.
