When my rugby loving britsh born, Aussie citizen, Wallabies supporting father passed away a whole bunch of his Maori mates performed a haka at his grave side as a show of respect. @@FlyingSpaghettiMonsterZealot Not sure if you are referring to my comment or something you heard in the video, it's been a while since I watched it. But I never said anything about honour. I said it was a show of power. My dad's mates asked if they could perform their family's haka (which was different to other haka you may have seen because it was specific to their family) at his graveside. 12 men stood there and put everything they had into this haka out of respect for my dad. It made the earth shake under my feet 15 meters away. All that energy and effort out of love and respect for a man they admired. It's my understanding that the Haka varies by tribal region and meaning, with many haka telling the story of significant events in a tribe's history. Some tell stories of war, some of escape and yes, some may tell stories of devouring their enemies. However, today, haka is performed on important occasions, such as sporting events, weddings and funerals as a show of respect. Haka is a part of Maori culture, it doesn't frighten me it inspires me, and for that reason, I hope it stays a part of rugby forever.

@orhugs3 жыл бұрын
@@mrwolf8164 I understand that, and I agree it's abhorrent that that happened. The only reason I say it's respected is because it at least creates a space for Maori leaders to reclaim their traditions. Assuming (from skin colour alone) that several of these players are Maori, then it's a place for them to express. But I also agree there's a fine line between honour and appropriation. I think it's also impressive to an extent that even though a genocide happened, the country has found humility(?) Enough to allow a minority group to have reign of such a white dominated sport.

We have a big debate about "cultural appropriation" going on here in Canada right now - the idea that someone of one (usually dominant, i.e. white) culture should not take over or take on cultural expressions of a dominated and oppressed culture. I have a suspicion that if this kind of thing happened in Canada there would be a real controversy.

For all the overseas viewers who do not watch rugby or know much about the haka/All Blacks. The All Blacks are the most successful sporting team in any sports in history, with higher winning percentage than the likes of Manchester United, Golden State Warriors etc. They have won the last two Rugby World Cups, competed by 20 countries (such as USA, England, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, France, Canada etc), one of the worlds biggest sporting events outside of America. The haka is a traditional war dance the New Zealand natives (Maori's) used before going into battle, but is also used as a form of respect, hence why it used by the All Blacks (NZ's rugby team - rugby is the countries favourite sport) before the matches commence. It's also been used by the national Basketball and Rugby League sides. Please don't listen to anything Cassidy Boon says...

Joravar 123 , do not blame an ideology for the mistakes of its followers. the biggest murderers of the 20th century are atheists like Stalin, that does not make atheists bad people. The KKK call themselves christians while murdering thousands of black people, that does not mean Christians are bad people. George Bush invaded countries that had not attacked America, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, many many more than those killed by islamist terrorists, that does not make Americans bad people. Israel has massacred thousands of palestinians, that does not make Jews bad people. Finally , the so called civilized west has supported these terrorists by helping the likes of Saudi-Arabia. My friend re-evaluate what you said above, and learn to love your brother . A famous Muslim Saint by the Name of Ali said People are of 2 kinds, either a brother in faith or an equal in humanity.
