i swear, i could never play the psp one; i couldnt beat hard bosses and it was after grinding for a while. a bit hard to get into the series.

I cleared the original PSP version myself, and I feel pretty confident saying the newer ones, including the remake of GE1, feel alot more accessible than before. The controls are smoother and you have alot more opinions at your disposal too. I'd say to give the series another shot if you see any of the games on sale.
