Dialogue is even better when you realize what Athena's strategy was. Mind of a genius, skilled with words, and kind of funny are all traits Zeus has and would no doubt get Hera thinking about him and all of his escapades. So when Athena stated his redeeming feature, it had more impact.

@@flamenami Actually, Medea was writren and performed over a century before the Argonautica, around 431 BC and sometime around the first half of the 3rd century BC respectively. Medea was written by the Greek Playwright Euripedes who lived around 480-405 BC, Apollonius of Rhodes who was the Author of the Argonautica (or Jason and the Argonauts) wasn't born until some time around 295 BC. So Medea was the original, and Apollonius is kind of like a published fanfic author who wrote a prequel after the copyright expired and it entered public domain. I studied Greek plays and history in college and an a Hellenic Polytheist, so I spend a lot of time reading and researching the original plays. Edit: Also in the original Medea play, it's revealed that Medea only married Jason because he had Hera's favor and the goddess convinced Aphrodite to make her fall in love with him. Jason breaking his vow to Medea was kind of like a double insult to Hera who helped him and is the Goddess of Marriage. So he died sad and alone, crushed by the rotting mast of the ship he once sailed. So yeah, the Gods very much said "fuck you Jason."

Also, Hera's husband, Zeus, can be described with every one of those traits except “Never cheated on his wife,” so all of those traits were not convincing enough for Hera to free Odysseus because, like… Her husband has those traits, and he is still a cheating ass, but when she's told that Odysseus never cheated on his wife, she sees Odys loyalty, and it is enough to convince her that Odysseus deserves to be released. The part that really hits me is the semi-taunting “You can do better than that.” Hera is hearing Athena out, even though she likely doesn’t care and even hates Odysseus in some Roman myths. She hears the qualities that Athena is listing, and is likely in her mind associating them with other heroes who she views with disdain. It’s the fact that Odysseus never willingly cheats on Penelope that convinces Hera, the goddess of marriage, to let him go because that is shocking to her. Her own chosen hero Jason even cheats on his wife to try and get a more luxurious lifestyle. Athena’s chosen hero has succeeded where Hera’s failed in being faithful to his wife, and that’s genuinely impressive to Hera. It’s also nice how Hera seems to respect Athena somewhat, even calling her “baby” seemingly as an affectionate nickname for her stepdaughter, because a lot of people seem to not know that Hera is Zeus’ second wife after absorbing his first.
@flamenami3 ай бұрын

Hera isn't Zeus's second wife after Metis in any texts though. In the one version where Metis is the first, Hera is the seventh consort (even Leto comes before her), but even then Athena is born during Zeus and Hera's marriage and it angers Hera. And there are also several versions in which Zeus sleeps with Metis when he is already married to Hera, of course.

Fantastic animatic and designs, Hera spitting out the wine was definitely a highlight. Also technically Athena is right, in the Odyssey Odysseus is forced to sleep with Circe to save his men (basically you can't really consent if you're threatened into it), and Odysseus didn't (at least willingly) cheat on his beloved wife. So Athena technically never lies to Hera. EDIT: ik Jay changed TAOW so Ody didn't sleep with Circe, which only proves my point that Ody didn't cheat on his wife. Also btw in the Odyssey Ody was Calypso's prisoner so any s*xual act is also under coercion and dubious consent (cause Calypso is also powerful and holding his life in her hand), idk how Jay will change the Calypso storyline but no matter what it still can't be considered consensual BECAUSE LIKE WITH CIRCE THERE WAS A MAJOR POWER IMBALANCE AND ODY WAS OFFERED VERY LITTLE CHOICE. I have several replies in the reply section please read them all if you're going to argue.

@@Fern-Lynn2411 so true! And even when he was offered immortality by Calypso he still chose Penelope. It's clear from the Odyssey that he really loves and misses Penelope, he wants to return to her more than anything, and so Penelope (and Telemachus) can be argued to be his main driving force in the entire Epic. If it was any other circumstance he likely would never have cheated. Also gotta admit not very often does Greek mythology have husbands who genuinely love and value their wife over power. In the original Odyssey, Odysseus does willingly sleep with Calypso. However, in ancient Greece, when a man sleeps with a woman without the intention of marrying her then that was not considered cheating. Because this means that throughout the years, despite any differences the two have had, Athena’s always been there to willingly listen to Odysseus’s jokes. And yeah, that’s a small thing, but in a day and age such as this when you expect the gods to be all serious and whatnot, it matters. That’s just a small detail I wanted to highlight. Also the art is great and I adore Hera’s design-

One other thing I wanna mention which I thought deserved its own reply: Hera isn’t very skinny. She has a relatively plump figure, being big and tall and clearly spoilt. She isn’t fat, not at all, but compared to Athena, Aphrodite, and Circe, her figure is much bigger. It really sells the whole “Greek Queen of All Gods” type of vibe. Because since she’s literally the queen, she has access to all these riches and luxuries that most of the gods beneath her don’t have. She’s able to relax and waste time more often than the others, thus she has a bit more weight to her. This actually makes her seem more powerful and threatening, and also more like a strict mother in Athena’s case. (Granted, I don’t know much yet about the history of the Greek Gods so idk how many children Hera and Zeus actually had but it must’ve been a lot lol)

I love how smug Athena looks when she pulls out "Never once has he cheated on his wife". You just know that it is this point she knows will convince Hera to let him go, and she planned to use it from the very beginning. Everything before that is only token arguments before slam dunking the true point. In true Athena form she's playing on how Hera sees her, a kind of young and awkward goddess who is trying to playfully save a mortal, by mentioning really silly things like "He's kinda funny" to bait her in. Then bam! comes the true point, which with the really obvious hint at Zeus infidelity would probably make Hera loose it normally. If it was not delivered by what seems to be a really young awkward godess trying to playfully save a favoured mortal in what is supposed to be a "game". Truly a show of Athenas role of godess of wisdom and the "manipulation" Aries mentiones in their earlier showdown

I like to think that is the song where Athena's silliness is starting to come out more, when she started listing all the good quality Odysseus has that can convince Hera to let him go, especially at the end when she says 'he's kinda funny' and by the way, I love your art😍

Remember, however, that we are talking about a goddess whose husband is responsible for some gods who weren't her children, plus some mortal heroes and kings, and, as some point out, her chosen one, Jason, was not faithful either.

I love that Athena's strategy is to say things that apply to Zeus and then 1 that does not. That way Zeus is on Hera's mind when Athena says "never cheated on his wife". Absolutely fantastic!

everything about this is absolutely fantastic--the shots, the movement within the shots, the designs, the expressions, the peacocks, the visual comedy of athena progressing through all of odysseus's traits in descending order of impressiveness--but definitely the greatest touch was hera choking on her wine in time with the music

i LOVE hera's design, you can see the peacock influence so clearly! her nose and crown give her the same silhouette as the birds, especially in 0:07, and the way that her hips are wider than anywhere else makes it look so much like the body of the birds

0:08 0:10 I think it is interesting that while Athena is tall compared to a human, she is tall because she is built extremely tall and slender but is otherwise human sized. Normal sized head, hands, etc. Whereas Hera is not built like a unusually tall woman, she is simply larger in every way.

why dose it feel like you captured a version of athena and hera being like mother and daughter like to eachother lol

Technically, they are step-mother and step daughter. Athena's mother Metis was Zeus's wife before Hera. So yeah.

@@terra4822Would make sense why hera would have a better relationship with her then say Apollo or Artemis.
@omniavanitas78932 ай бұрын
@@Shauntheduke. In the one and only account where Zeus takes Metis as a consort before Hera (Hesiod's Theogony), he also takes Leto as a consort before her. And while Apollo and Artemis are born before Zeus marries Hera in this source, Athena is actually born after.
