Have you ever known depression? Have you been so worried and perplexed that you endured sleepless nights? Have you had times when you were so low and troubled, no one could comfort you? Have you been so down that you felt like giving up, feeling your life was a total failure?
I’m not talking about a physical condition. I’m not referring to people who have a chemical imbalance or mental illness. I’m talking about Christians who, from time to time, battle a depression that hits them from out of nowhere. Their condition often comes not from just a single source, but from many. At times they’re hit from all sides, until they’re so overwhelmed they can’t see beyond their despair.
If this describes you, then Psalm 77 was written for you. It is meant to point the way out of your distress and fear. This Psalm was written by a man named Asaph, a Levite, from the priestly line in Israel. Asaph was also a singer, and served as David’s appointed choir director. Altogether, Asaph wrote eleven Psalms. And they were so filled with righteous instruction for God’s people I would call this man a lay preacher.
Asaph wrote Psalm 77 after he fell into a horrible pit of despair. His condition grew so bad that Asaph was beyond comfort: “My soul refused to be comforted” (Psalm 77:2). This godly man was in such despair, nothing anyone said could bring him out of his condition. And Asaph himself couldn’t manage to say even a word: “I am so troubled that I cannot speak” (77:4).
Yet Asaph was a praying man. We see this in the same Psalm, as he testifies, “I cried unto God with my voice…and he gave ear unto me” (77:1).
I’m sure Asaph had heard David’s very similar testimony, in Psalm 34: “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry” (34:15). David says earlier in this Psalm, “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears…. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles” (34:4, 6).
No doubt, Asaph had heard David tell the compelling story of how he had to flee to Gath to get away from Saul. David had to pretend he was a madman in that town to escape with his life. This exiled servant of the Lord felt so low at that point, like such a great failure, that he cried out to God. He sought the Lord in his agony, and David testifies that he was totally delivered. In fact, God put a song in David’s heart.
We see David relating a new song of faith to his musicians, in Psalm 40. Surely this song made its way into the hands of Asaph, the choir director. The Psalm declares, “He…heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings” (40:1-2).
As the nation’s worship leader, Asaph sang these songs about deliverance and answered prayers. He ministered these very truths to Israel, arranging and declaring them in song, leading the choir in a unified voice of faith. In fact, in his own worship song - Psalm 78 - Asaph chastises Israel for their unbelief. He corrects them, telling them God hadn’t answered their prayers because of their sin:
“Their spirit was not steadfast with God. They spoke against God, saying, ‘Can the Lord furnish a table in the wilderness? Can he give bread also?’ For all this, they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works. They limited the Holy One of Israel. They provoked and grieved him” (see Psalm 78).
Yet now Asaph was facing his own battle. The Bible doesn’t tell us what caused this man’s depression. All we know is, his soul was so heavy he couldn’t sleep at all: “Thou holdest mine eyes waking” (77:4).

Only our sins can separate us from our God but he is faithful and just to forgive us all sin. Those who call upon the name of the lord jesus christ shall be saved.

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.( NKJV) I was a wee baby christian when the Lord led me to this scripture. I suffered my whole life of 44 yrs, at that time, with depression. Be anxious for nothing He taught me. I haven't perfected it by a long shot, but knowing how depression is caused is a tremendous help and a blessing. Peace to you, my brothers and sisters in Christ ✝️ Hold on to faith. Dont let go✝️

Our Father's Love. I was writing one of my kids to let them know that I have no hard feelings and was thinking I might let them know I forgive them, but I couldn't say that because I never had any hard feelings to begin with. That, I still see them as perfect. As I finished saying that I felt the Lord telling me that that is how He feels about me and all of us, His Children. It wouldn't matter what any of my kids may ever do, all they'd have to do is come to me and say is "I'm sorry, I love you Dad", and all would be forever forgotten, never to be mentioned again. If we as an earthly parent feel that way, how much infinitely greater does our Heavenly Father feel that way toward us? He showed us... The Cross.

First of all, there's the regular - physical - depression. It may very well have some spiritual implications, although it is not a spiritual phenomena per-se. And like all spiritual things it can have two sources, that is, unless in your theology God is forbidden to use painful methods to sanctify or test someone. And then, there's the so-called "spiritual despression", what the St. John of the Cross calls "the dark night of the soul". I'd say that book is a must-read for all Christians, regardless of their denomination. This is nothing but God's very own work in tge life of the saint. Now some Charismatics have the tendency to over-simplify and over-spiritualize some things. There's no "spiritual warfare" always involved, in truth, lest one find himself or herself attempting to "fight" God every now and then.

I’m struggling as well. I few months ago I was loving life. I felt like what I had been missing all my life had been found in Jesus. I knew we would have ups and downs. But I thought when I asked God for a break from it he would give it to me. But I’m still going through it. What feels like silence. But now I can hardly pray or read the Bible. It’s like heaven closed up. But I know it’s for his purposes. He’s not being mean. A lot of times I find myself talking to God like he’s a human. And he’s not he’s God. So of course I’m not going to understand what he’s doing. He told us to not even try. Yet our human mind does it anyway. All I can say is God has you. And every weight of suffering is producing a weight of glory for you when you get to heaven. He hasn’t forgotten. He’s working his will for your life right now. He loves you!! Don’t listen to the enemy. This is all for a purpose. And when he reveals it to us we will be on our face praising him. Also you can talk to me anytime you need to. We are all going through the same types of sufferings. But we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

You sound very cold towards God. Open your heart to him. Let him heal you. Go into a quiet room and talk to him. Tell him you don’t know why you went through what you did. But you want a healing of the heart that you can feel. He is able to do this. A few weeks ago the thought of Suicide crossed my mind. I was so sad. I only had enough energy to say help me God. Because I knew that wasn’t the answer. And he blocked it. I felt it supernaturally disappear. That’s how good our God is. It’s sound like your letting anger block Jesus from coming in. Jesus is a gentleman he will not force himself in. He will come in when you have an open heart to him.

You are in perfect company with me. I’m not speaking as someone who’s never felt lonely or abandoned... in fact that’s how I feel right now... God showed me his beauty and love. Now I’m so in love with him! But just like you I’m struggling to feel, see or even understand what’s happening to me either. But I have to keep putting my trust and hope in God. He’s the only one that can make life better or bearable for us. Last night this came to me. “When this situation is all over; will it make you stronger or weaker?... If the answers yes keep going” I’m also in a spiritual desert. But we have to keep trusting God. If we mess up and sin. Come back to the cross where forgiveness is found. It’s a lie from the devil that you’ve worn out your welcome with God. I’m not immune to his lies either I often fall for them. Then something is sent from God I believe to help me and get me back on the right track.

Also one thing that’s really helped me is to sing to God. At night or just when I’m alone or in the car. It actually tells us numerous times in the Bible to sing to him. I didn’t at first because I’m not the best singer. But God doesn’t care. He loves the sound of his children’s voice. I like it because it’s something unseen that I know goes up and reaches God’s ears. Also the Devil hates it. So all the more reason to do it!

So very sorry to hear that. Life is often a total mystery to us. I too have suffered much loss in life, i.e. tragic loss of my father cearly in life, seen war as a little child, endured an abusive & traumatic childhood, a shattered marriage, material loss, financial devastation, failed business projects, etc etc. I wrestled with the Lord especially early in life before I got a revelation of Who He is, of His great love towards all of us. Sadly, in life there will be much heartache - I have suffered much in this regard, but the Lord didn't kill my father, He didn't put it in my husbands heart to break my heart in the worst way imaginable to me which has had very long lasting consequences, God didn't cause the financial hardships, the failed businesses. My daughter was going to commit suicide as well when God called out to her and she heeded. I had tried to take my life as a child due to a traumatic childhood & so did my mother before me. See, the Lord doesn't MAKE anyone do anything, but I know from experience if we are the least bit open to it, we will heed that still small voice & God kept me from taking my own life when I was yet unsaved! I didn't even know Him, but in that hour of despair I cried out to Him, not knowing if He even existed or cared, and He heard my faint cry & answered me. I could've ignored, I could've persisted in dwelling on the sadness that had consumed my life, but I chose with the little bit of 'strength' left in me to lean on God, to let Him into my heart. I was clinically depressed, suicidal, but God brought me out. He also healed me of the hole in my heart that was left behind when my father died tragically early in life. The Lord became & exceeded what I had always desired and longed for in a loving father. He also went on to restore my marriage, though that was a very long and difficult process. My daughter went on to become a source of joy & encouragment to others who struggle the way she did with depression, etc. Other things have not been restored & there's still areas of profound suffering, but though I may not understand it all, I KNOW He is faithful & He will heal your broken heart if you turn to Him & allow Him, He will comfort you in your deepest anguish like no other can, He will restore your life & give you beauty for ashes, even if it takes time sometimes, but I know He will, brother. I have learned & grown so much through many trials & hardships, I have resisted by His grace to become bitter - though at times I failed - but I would pour out my heart's anguish to Him, run into His arms, ask Him what He wanted me to learn from a particular trial. Nothing is wasted in Him! God bless you!

I wouldn't think so. If you work out for the right reasons. Your body is the temple of God. Therefore if you are working out to be healthy then it's a good thing. If on the other hand you are working out to attract the opposite sex and you are doing it for sexual reasons it is not good. Unless you are married and doing it for your spouse. There are many reasons people work out and as long as you are not doing it to commit sins, I believe it is OK.

oh my you are exactly how I felt for about eight months..I was believing that too but I watched a video of someone's near death experience where they met God and the way they describe His love its pretty detailed even in the commentspeople talking about what they saw it sounded very real and impossible that God doesn't love you...ironically I was googling "losing faith" at the time and this video was called "how I lost my faith" but the guy lost his faith and instead had a knowing of who God was cos he met Him- though I cna't remember if he met God or Jesus
