The song is about the second stage of grief (anger), it’s about how you feel god hates us and our sinful nature during the stage of grief: anger (and depression)

they have another song called “Dear God” which has quite a total different sound and meaning than this song. I think you guys would have a great response to that one

I would just like to add, that the band themselves are actually inspired in part by christianity. This song itself could be considered them blowing off steam in relation to the death of their late drummer the rev. They even have references to this song being words to the wind in other songs off the same album.

Yeah I agree. If you check out some of their older songs they have references to the Bible! They have a song called Dear God lol

I think the band has now grown past the normal Christian beliefs and kinda made their own beliefs but I still truly think they believe in God and are Christian’s deep down. Im a Christian and I have my own wild conspiracy theories which is why I’m stoked for LIBAD!

@@TheMrShadowsX yes, I absolutely loved the stage because of how experimental it was and it touched on concepts that are usually seperated from the idea of god. I still think they are christian like you do, but its awesome that they're exploring concepts of existence, AI, and some nihilism. The stage was a very science/ sci fi based album and I cannot wait for LIBAD.

they were never a Christian band 😂 do some research, doesn't take long
@heyitgeg Жыл бұрын
@@mallorcamopedlife860 I never said they were a christian band, I said they were founded on christianity. 2 different things. And its really obvious if you look at their early songs, chapter 4 is literally about the story of cain and abel. And the name Avenged Sevenfold itself is a reference to god saying the act that cain committed would be avenged sevenfold.

I think the song is about Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, the band’s drummer and best friend - who died in 2009 during the album’s recording. They feel like god took jimmy from them so they feel like god hates them.

Thank you for the context behind this piece. I figured it would be related to some form of suffering, and losing someone that close never feels fair

Respect on the free speech comment. I'm an atheist but I'd never push those beliefs (or lack of) on people. Alot of songs on this album are about their friend and drummer Jimmy The Rev Sullivan pass away. It's likely anger and grief that's represented in this song. It comes after so far away which is far more somber and emotional song about how heaven feels so far away because he's gone.
@x2zchat Жыл бұрын
Agreed, regardless of our beliefs we also respect the beliefs of others. The resentment and sorrow can definitely be felt throughout this song which makes sense considering they lost someone so close and at the core of their group
@robertonome2448 Жыл бұрын
I think that "the idea I stole" refers to the band (and the name, which is a reference to Cain and Abel), he "left himself" to fully comitt to it and look at where it got him? As in, its not a band anymore without the Rev? Dunno tho, could be wrong Could also be a reference to the demos and idea they "stole" from Jimmy in order to complete the album after he passed

A rumor use to go around that they were a religious band. Their stage names “the rev”, synaster gates, etc. then songs like “ the beast and harlot”, Shepards of fire, there are more but I just got off work and my brain is fried. They lost the rev and if you don’t know the whole band grew up together and lost their brother to drugs and this is why you hear some hate and anger. Newer songs off of nightmare it’s more of them in denial, depression and sorrow over his death.
@xerodelacroix5552 Жыл бұрын
Being that this entire album is about The Rev's death, this song is intentionally chaotic, angry and somewhat lyrically nonsensical, it was just them going in and letting the anger phase of mourning out.

I think the "Total nightmare" lyric tells a lot. It would be for quite a few people a total nightmare if the god they worshipped truly hated them. Also, many people, particularly followers of Islam, truly think their belief in god will protect them in battle. I think Rob's religious beliefs and rejection of the lyrics at face value alone robbed you of the opportunity to discuss a truly interesting song.

I would also argue artistic intent because metal is very much counter culture and the title "God Hates Us" is most likely intentionally provocative. Especially given the themes of the album. 10/10 drumming by Mike portnoy

"Screamo" is just derogatory, man.
@x2zchat Жыл бұрын
'Screamo' is a subgenre of music that emerged in the early 1990s. Not meant to be derogatory but rather a technical term defining a certain style of music characterized by the use of screaming vocals. According to Wikipedia, "Avenged Sevenfold has also been described as screamo and pop-punk metal"
@steenosrs8077 Жыл бұрын
@@x2zchat Screamo is a different genre. Avenged is Metalcore not screamo. Screamo is "screamed emo". Which honestly means it's just regular modern Post-Hardcore but edgier. Which is still very different from Avenged which is Metalcore.
@_WeDontKnow_ Жыл бұрын
@@x2zchat im with you, people usually dont like the term "screamo" being used to describe bands that do a LOT more than screaming, and avenged sevenfold is definitely one of those bands. they moved away from screaming and into melody pretty early on, but I'd say this song definitely classifies as "screamo" in the way people use the term nowadays. even the melodic parts are very aggressive and 'screamy'. I definitely think there's a place for this kind of energy, though i've always been drawn to avenged sevenfold's more 'outside the box' projects, the stuff that sits somewhere between metal/rock and some other genre. they're really amazing dynamic songwriters, I can see why people are hesitant to throw them in with the "screamo" crowd
