My dog is half staffie, half frenchie. She definitely has the feisty peersonality, but none of the breathing issues. She's basically s small staffie with big bat ears and an no fear of telling us off when we're not doing something to her exact specification. But she's also a sweetheart who loves people. She's not keen on other dogs, but makes an exception for puppies, because they trigger her maternal instincts.

Someone here in the Netherlands was in the news not all too long ago for something related to this. They started a breeding program to restore the snouts of dogs with respiratory problems. If all goes well we can have more "normal" dogs again that won't have to suffer from breathing issues.

I work at a doggy daycare, and one of my duties is to give the frenchies (and other dogs with similar breathing issues) regular play breaks so they can catch their breath and cool down 😢

That's absolutely heartbreaking but I'm very happy there's things like this where you work that doesn't overwork the dog's body! I had a purebred chihuahua that would have to deal with tracheal collapse on a daily basis. This would occur either from varying levels of excitement (for a chihuahua this was impossible to avoid), or just out of the blue. It hurt seeing her go through that everyday, I hope at some point everyone can collectively agree to stop the breeding of animals that have to deal with chronic issues just because they look "nice".

Having my own frenchie that had her nasal passages opened, along with having her soft palate shortened, plus a slew of other issues (floating kneecap, IBD, cancer), I will attest that she is the sweetest dog with the best potato personality. However I will not be getting another frenchie, she’s 10 and again I love her more than anything, but I thought I had a reputable breeder, but I’ve learned that they have been bred to have shorter snouts and a different body which is prone to IVDD over many years and the current iteration of pups is not healthy, very sweet, but heartbreaking when you see the struggles they have to endure.

Extremely heartbreaking!!! My baby who’s not 4 yet, became fully paralyzed last year with ivdd. And his allergies are atrocious. Everything I see about frenchies being the most popular breed never mention ANYTHING on the potential issues they will come with later in their life. When my female dog had only one puppy her vet asked me if I could donate some of her milk for a litter of pugs who's mum had died of respiratory failure whilst giving birth. The vet came to my house to teach me how to milk my dog, the vet said it happened alot with pugs.

@sfisher89101 no it was pretty easy and she was really good about it. I just put the pup on her teat so whilst he was feeding I milked her and took the milk to the vet. I made sure I was gentle it is easier than a cow.

I remember reading a post by a vet about how when they had to stick tubes down a dogs nose(think it was bulldog or a pug) it seemed relieved and happy as it could actually breathe properly for the first time in its life and op could actually see the difference it was making for this poor dog. They said it was really common in the flat face breeds to have some sort of respiratory problem

It's true, I went to Sony Canton College and did the vet program where they explained that it is Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). The compact architecture of their skull results in deformation, that make the nostrils or soft palate too small, obstructing airflow and leaving the pups gasping for breath the back of their throats cause breathing problems.

Yes, my Frenchie is the same. The breeder hated the new colours and the potato look. Said it was unethical and created health issues. Concentrated instead on creating a healthy and friendly family dog, which mine is. Slightly longer nose, longer legs, no allergies or health issues. Fiesty/cute but not an aggressive bone in his body. He's just what a Frenchie should be

I’ve got a Frenchie but he’s the runt. So he has a face that doesn’t look like he ran into a window, no breathing probs. His ears don’t stick up and are pointy rather than curved, and his legs are longer. Makes him extra special to me. He’s a love bug.

Mine is a runt too. Was pushed off his mama by litter mates and he never grew much. His nose is a bit longer and he doesnt have breathing issues either. Hes extremely loving. Love his personality. Great guard dog.

@@Lance.Gardenhire for mine yes, as his face isn’t so squashed looking. It’s longer than it should be. He’s a rescue because breeder didn’t want him as she knew she couldn’t sell him for the crazy price they ask for these dogs.

There are breeders who are trying to make them as they used to be before we completely messed them up, support them if possible or get a mix. Yes, I know adopting is the best option but speaking solely of people wanting that particular breed and support of the people trying to help that breed.

I personally have never been attracted to breeds that are inherently deformed. It's one thing to change an animal's color, or minor feature via breeding, but once you get to a pug or Frenchie, that's just all kinds of messed up.

I'm glad there are people trying to regress the breed's line, but sadly the deformed ones will always exist now. Stupid is as stupid does, and as long as there's a market for something, it will be provided.

I have a rescue dog, she's a mix of siberian husky, golden retriever and pomeranian (had to do a dna test to find out as got tired of saying "not sure she's a rescue") she's such a well behaved docile dog, she's amazing with children especially the little ones, she'll have tummy rubs all day long and has been best friends with my nephew since before he was even born. Do not let horror stories from dog parents who can't be bothered to be responsible stop you from rescuing any breed of dog, only thing you should consider is your own experience with a specific breed and if you know that you can't handle that type of dog then rescue one that you know you can handle.
