We just had this at the Methodist Church I attend. That background music sounds so familiar. I know this piece well, but the music seems so familiar from another piece.

Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God's grace. And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God's grace.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. This past Sunday (October 19), we sang this as our closing hymn. It is #705 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship in the Justice, Peace section. Just thought I'd share.

Funny, I'm Baptist and it seems as if this hymn is shared by many denominations. Awesome! May we all glorify God!

Beautiful! Rev. Barber referenced this song in his homily during the 2021 Inaugural prayer service on what it means to be repairers of the breach.

My favorite hymn, Harry Emerson Fosdick understood the needs of the community to rise up and be CHRISTIAN! When I preached at other congregations I always checked if their hymnal had all 5 verses. If they didn't I sent the verses and asked the secretary to put them in the bulletin!!

Sue - this is my all time favorite hymn, too. Very uplifting and reminds us to always and forever look to our God for truth and humility. Our choir up in the chancel at 2nd Presb in STL sings this similarly at higher octave on the last two stanzas.

Thanks! It is a spiritual and meditative time for me to type the hymn text while listening to the music.

It's me, again. This is to all denominations: If 2 Chronicles 19:4-11 is your Scripture of the Day, this is a good hymn to compliment it.

Thanks. Yes, I find myself "orchestrating" the hymns, striving for constancy of tempo ... while encouraging (exciting) the worshipper to SING. At least, that's my goal. The processional and recessional hymns lend styles for this; the middle hymn (sermon hymn) is usually played in a straight forward manner. [Good to hear from you. Happy "Great 50 Days" of Easter!]

God of grace and God of glory, On Thy people pour Thy power. Crown Thine ancient church’s story, Bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour. Lo! the hosts of evil ’round us, Scorn Thy Christ, assail His ways. From the fears that long have bound us, Free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days. Cure Thy children’s warring madness, Bend our pride to Thy control. Shame our wanton selfish gladness, Rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal, Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal. Set our feet on lofty places, Gird our lives that they may be, Armored with all Christ-like graces, In the fight to set men free. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, That we fail not man nor Thee, That we fail not man nor Thee. Save us from weak resignation, To the evils we deplore. Let the search for Thy salvation, Be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Serving Thee whom we adore, Serving Thee whom we adore. Harry Emerson Fosdick (May 24, 1878 - October 5, 1969) American Protestant pastor. written in 1930. The title of Fosdick’s 1956 autobiography The Living of These Days echoes the lyrics.

It's me..., again. This is once again to all denominations: If Acts 6:8-7:2 is your Scripture of the Day, this is also a good hymn to compliment it. It is Stephens's arrest and speech. His commemoration is December 26.

37 ranks, 3-manuals, very little unification, 2,444 pipes. Yes, our Methodist and United Methodist hymnals have altered, changed/or omitted stanzas through the years. Thanks for commenting.

First of all, this is very beautiful. Secondly, is that a Schantz organ? There is a UMC here in Ashland, VA with a similar great/ swell/ choir layout in the chancel. Just curious.

How can people not love the mainline churches? I'll take this over evangelical "praise music" anyday. Don't get me wrong, I think praise music is great at church camp, just not in church.

Knowing Fosdick's theology, or lack there of, diminishes this song to a social agenda proclamation.
