At the midnight church service held on our base in Saudi Arabia hours before the launch of DESERT STORM, this was the featured hymn. The words resonated with everyone present -- "Grant us wisdom, grant us courage in the facing of this hour..." Not a dry eye in the chapel. Will never forget it.

Beautiful hymn! Very encouraging to me at this very moment of trial and discouragement. Nothing does my heart healing as sacred music.

Very uplifting.Thank you.No doubt these words were written during WWII. In Fosdick's "A Great Time To Be Alive," written in that time, the first words were "This certainly is a ghastly time to be alive." But then he goes on to tell why it's a great time to be alive.

God of grace and God of glory, On Thy people pour Thy power. Crown Thine ancient church’s story, Bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the facing of this hour, For the facing of this hour. Lo! the hosts of evil ’round us, Scorn Thy Christ, assail His ways. Fears and doubts too long have bound us, (OR: From the fears that long have bound us) Free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days. [Alternate for Vs 2: From the evils that surround us And assail Thy Saviour's ways. From the fears that long have bound us Free our hearts for faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, For the living of these days.] Cure Thy children’s warring madness, Bend our pride to Thy control. Shame our wanton selfish gladness, Rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal, [OR: Make our broken spirits whole] Lest we miss Thy kingdom’s goal. Set our feet on lofty places, Gird our lives that they may be, Armored with all Christ-like graces, In the fight to set men free. [OR: In the fight to set us free] Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, That we fail not man nor Thee, [OR: In the quest for liberty] That we fail not man nor Thee. Save us from weak resignation, To the evils we deplore. Let the search for Thy salvation, Be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Serving Thee whom we adore, Serving Thee whom we adore. Harry Emerson Fosdick (May 24, 1878 - October 5, 1969) American Protestant pastor. written in 1930. The title of Fosdick’s 1956 autobiography "The Living of These Days" echoes the lyrics.

This was a Baptist Church? With an organ like that? Wow. I grew up in the Baptist Church but never had an organ like that -nor music like that. This was fantastic.

I think FOSDICK would have been QUITE OFFENDED at this travesty of his intentions as well as the use of the WRONG TUNE. Fosdick always insisted on REGENT SQUARE and the insistence of hymnal editors to set CWM RHONDDA (and even worse-association tunes) infuriated him. It was never intended to be used to celebrate American Imperialism, and just because the Great Unwashed associate REGENT SQUARE with «Xma$» doesn't make disrespecting Fosdick's original any less egregious. At least The Harvard University Hymn Book managed to get it right.
@williamfrank7565 Жыл бұрын
respectfully..... you are making much of little......Fosdick himself was a study in contrasts....a reformed pastor at the Riverside Church is diverse(I visited at Riverside for a number of years)....Riverside is as progressive as can be had...and is founded on the money of John D. Rockefeller(another huge paradox).....changing tunes based on the matching meter of the song is simply not that big of a deal....and Fosdick has been dead for close to 55 years....so I am sure he got over it LOL
@freemandryden2275 Жыл бұрын
@@williamfrank7565 Points well-taken. TWO ««GREAT TUNES»» except that CWM RHONDDA has become almost as over-used and ubiquitous as NEW BRITAIN although even the TEXT of the latter is banal. The militarists singing «Cure your children's warring madness...» surely weren't paying much attention to that part of Fosdick's text or even what follows.
@williamfrank7565 Жыл бұрын
@@freemandryden2275 thanks...now I see something of what you mean.....for me CWM RHONDDA is classic....I am a retired Lutheran church organist(pipe organ at that)...but spent some time in the NE of Pennsylvania where Welsh and the hymn sing was revered....Peace

@@williamfrank7565 Well we have some of the same interests/experiences! Decades ago, walking aimlessly around downtown Toronto I encountered the siren sounds of 4-part Welsh singing emanating from a crumbling Victorian pile the known as Crawford Street United Church. The congregation of about 400 was sitting by voice-part and being led by a massive but sadly decrepit Pipe Organ. Hooked, I began attending Cymanfa Ganu every time I could and even procured the a copy of «Deuwch Canwn I'r Arglwydd» (1979 ed.) so I could learn to sing the Welsh words at least passably correctly. That led to singing in a Welsh Male Choir for close to a decade and my championing of Welsh hymn-tunes in my own church as some of the most-singable ever composed.
